Sadly I didn’t get the opportunity to see this at the cinema, but caught up with it today.
I thought it was marvellous, faultless cast, beautiful cinematography, and I really felt uplifted after watching it.
Anyone else a fan?
I was so surprised not to find a thread on the subject already.

I thought it was one of the worst films I've seen and I was so looking forward to it. I turned it off

Same here. My mother was a big Paul Gallico fan, (and I wasn't!) so maybe that has something to do with it. Relentlessly lightweight. It was fun to see good old Lambert Wilson, I suppose. But Huppert was wasted.

Thanks for the book links!

ThisBlueCrab · 27/07/2024 11:24

Sorry am a huge fan of the original.and the book and felt the revamped version was appalling.

You just didn't get the emotion and investment in the same way as the original.

Twistybranch · 27/07/2024 11:31

They should have had Mrs Harris on the runway last night in her dior gown

Elderflower14 · 27/07/2024 11:58

There are four books...
Flowers For Mrs Harris
Mrs Harris Goes To New York.
Mrs Harris Goes To Moscow..
Mrs Harris MP.

Then I have to assume you haven't seen many films.

I mean, I get that we all have different tastes. My dh, for example, wouldn't bother watching this sort of a film as it isn't to his taste, but, presuming you would only watch a film that you expect to like, so therefore would expect it to be gentle, inoffensive, and an all round generally 'nice' story, that's a pretty harsh judgement.

Watched it last weekend with three generations and we all loved it!

Yes although the order is:
Mrs H goes to Paris (original title Flowers for Mrs H)
Mrs H goes to New York
Mrs H MP
Mrs H goes to Moscow.

Still wondering if anyone actually reading the third one and enjoyed it.

I call these films Cuddle Films, you get to the end and feel in a better place.

Yes I have the same feeling (although with books).

I love all the Miss Read books for the same reason (not sure I'd want those made into films though tbh)

I like that Smile

I saw it at the cinema and loved it. There wwas quite a lot of criticism on mumsnet at the time. I haven't read the books or seen the original, and just watched the film with no preconceived ideas.

I really rate Lesley Manville as an actress anyway, and thought she was great in this.

LaurieFairyCake · 27/07/2024 17:25

I need more 'cosy' film recommendations please just like this 🙏

If you like Paul Gallico. I've also read

Thomasina the cat and
The Snow Goose

Wow! Thanks for this, Just asking.
I had no idea that the same author that inspired this film, also wrote the novella which inspired the 1971 BBC film ‘The Snow Goose’ star starring Richard Harris (the first actor that played Dumbledore in Harry Potter) and Jenny Agutter (call the midwife, and Spooks).
I saw the film as a pre-teen and it made a huge impression on me. It is set against the background of Dunkirk and the small boats rescue,

Watched it last night and thought it was lovely. Definitely kept the feel of the book even if the changed some of it.

PermanentTemporary · 28/07/2024 10:14

I was obsessed with Paul Gallico as a tween, I'll definitely watch this though I can't imagine how they've made it work!

Enko · 28/07/2024 10:17

Also didn't know ow this was a book so off to find it. Watched it in the cinema with adult dd and we had a lovely time.

Thankyou for saying this... Me too!!

And me, I turned it off and I rarely do that, weird as I was really looking forward to it.

rookiemere · 17/08/2024 14:55

I watched this last night. I was really looking forward to it, had the house all to myself, felt a bit disappointed really.

Lesley Manville is of course superb, but it required a bit more suspension of disbelief I guess, than I found plausible. It wasn't dreadful, but I got more enjoyment out of watching the first episode of the new series of Emily in Paris afterwards.
