if you don't want to spend 2 hours plus and not get a satisfactory ending...GRRRR!

OP posts:
DreamItDoIt · 10/12/2023 00:57

Agee OP, watched it tonight, it was almost as if they all got a bit bored and just decided to end it as they ran out of ideas!

stilldumdedumming · 10/12/2023 07:12

I'm half way thru at my dp's insistence. He thought it was so good he wanted to watch it again with me almost straight away! (He does have brain damage and doesn't always understand things. Let's see!

Popetthetreehugger · 10/12/2023 07:15

You will never get that evening back 🤣 utter pants

BurbageBrook · 10/12/2023 07:16

The book was the same. I felt like it had been a massive waste of time.

GreatGateauxsby · 10/12/2023 07:28

Preach. Totally irritating.

ProvisionsOnTheDock · 10/12/2023 07:32

Yeah, if you'd read the book you'd know this!

BackToRealMe · 10/12/2023 07:33

I always read the reviews before watching film so was prepared. I was bored half way through and annoyed by the stupid 'be scared' sound effects. I loved the settings though.

Decorhate · 10/12/2023 07:37

Agree. I was wtf at the dancing bit in the middle too

clpsmum · 10/12/2023 07:53

What a waste of time that was. And two and a half loooong hours too

Theredjellybean · 10/12/2023 07:57

Read the book...very unsatisfactory ending ..won't bother watching film

BethDuttonsTwin · 10/12/2023 08:04

I thought it was great. I loved the “we all need to stick together” message. I liked how the race issues were handled - subtle but hopeful. The ending was clear. Both family’s about to rejoin. Child gets to see the final episode of the sitcom where things wrapped up pretty much perfectly, which felt like an overall metaphor for the eventual outcome. I suppose I’d have liked to see them all meet up and go into the bunker but we don’t have to be spoon fed everything so we?

SaltedCaramelIcedLatte · 10/12/2023 08:11

It was long, slow and bloody rubbish!

bestbefore · 10/12/2023 08:26

I was amazed how their phones stayed charged, Julia's hair looked amazing, and how they didn't panic about food (or even really seem to eat any!) - still enjoyed it though. Ending def frustrating 😀

Anselma · 10/12/2023 08:34

Very annoying. All a bit slow but I kept watching thinking there was bound to be a dramatic conclusion but instead just a pointless ending. Almost as if there had been a mistake in filming and it had suddenly stopped prematurely. Waste of time.

mangochops · 10/12/2023 08:39

It's based on the book which had a similar open ended ending. I kinda liked it- the irony of "I'll be there for you" at the end when we know the entire point of the war was to turn everyone against each other. I quite liked the idea of showing the beginning of an apocalypse rather than the ending, it was unusual.

bridgetjonesmassivepants · 10/12/2023 08:41

I really wish I had read these reviews before I wasted two hours of my life last night watching it! Why didn't they go to see Danny earlier, why didn't Danny claim the bunker?

Also why was no one worried about food? They had only done a small shop at that mini supermarket and most of it seemed to be wine! How were they planning to feed themselves? Did they all get to the bunker? It didn't look like the bunker had enough food for a group of six. REALLY WORRIED ABOUT THE FOOD!!!

VesperLind · 10/12/2023 08:43

Watched it last night. Waited and waited for Kevin Bacon to swoop in and save the day or something but no. The plane crashes and ship grounding were laugh out loud ridiculous. Disappointing waste of a great cast. I had no idea there was a book.

mangochops · 10/12/2023 08:43

Also, didnt Ethan Hawke and Kevin bacon look like twins? I kept getting them mixed up 😆

piscofrisco · 10/12/2023 08:49

I liked it and I liked the book. I think the point of it was the ambiguous ending. I mean if there was an attack like that in real
Life and you found yourself in that situation that's probably what it would be like wouldn't it-if you were lucky you'd be somewhere safe, and you'd sit and wonder what was happening and be scared but you wouldn't really know. And if you were Lucky you would happen apon a well prepared unused nuclear bunker you could live in Grin

piscofrisco · 10/12/2023 08:50

The bunkers had loads of food and a lamp thing to grow vegetables and that. They'd have been fine.

piscofrisco · 10/12/2023 08:51

Danny presumably had a house full of things he'd prepped and didn't need the bunker as he had his own.

I liked it too. The ending was abrupt but overall it felt gripping

APurpleSquirrel · 10/12/2023 09:32

I enjoyed it. I don't think there could be a satisfactory ending tbh - unless they all died. If someone swooped in to save them, that would have been ridiculous.
It was interesting to see how they reacted to the situation, & how dependent on tech they were. The self-driving cars, reliance on GPS for travel, getting news etc.
The bits that felt odd to me were the deer - would they really have hung around to gather & stare? And the lack of other people. I know it's meant to be a rural area, low occupancy during the out season but I doubt they'd see so few/no people when out driving around. Surely some people would have headed to that area to get away from the city?
I'd also love to know what the lady speaking in Spanish actually said.

moonlitnoir · 10/12/2023 09:35

It really impressed upon me how reliant we are on our devices and how society is only two meals away from complete anarchy. Most people think of themselves as "good people" but in a catastrophic scenario, people turn on each other in an instant. Our veneer of "kindness" is really very fragile.

twilly · 10/12/2023 09:36

I liked it, food for thought
