I found this very underwhelming and charmless. I really enjoy Agatha Christie adaptations but this was just meh.

I thought it was good but I won’t be watching it again as it was too scary !

It was a stretch to call it an adaptation as far too many things were changed from the book. Michelle yeoh character for a start.

Tarmaced · 17/09/2023 19:07

I liked it!

ComputerInitiateJump · 17/09/2023 19:37

I much preferred the first two movies. This one was dark and there was a lot of dialogue and not much action so I drifted off to sleep near the end.

Maybe I would have enjoyed it more if I'd read the book.

Totally agree. Saw it today and it was rather rubbish, with a poor storyline.

Britpopbaby · 17/09/2023 20:31

I’ve not read the book but thought that good actors were wasted on a poorly plotted film. The thing with the ITV adaptations is that it’s just a pleasure to watch with lovely costumes and locations. That was all missing in this film!

Halloween Party is the book it is "based" on, but there is pretty much nothing else in common with the original story, other than the time of year its set in and names used.

Completely different plot and story.

In fact, the David Suchet adaptation of this particular novel follows the story more accurately.

It was okay. Passed a couple of hours.

I think a lot of these modern adaptations of classics tend to take liberties and change the story completely. See for example the abysmal recent adaptation of Great Expectations.

Britpopbaby · 17/09/2023 21:10

I might see if the David Suchet is on ITV X and watch it. I switched off the adaptation of GE after about 30 mins. I love the black and white version!

Agatha Christie must be turning in her grave . Apparently her heirs are planning a new load of Miss Marples as they see her being much younger - I’m not sure how they see that .

BasiliskStare · 20/09/2023 18:03

I've just been to see it and I thought enjoyable tosh - but DH and I did get 2for one tickets. If anyone thinks they are getting Poirot - no . Cinematography quite nice but it isn't a proper Agatha Christie Poirot. So, very pleased with cheap tickets

I don't know if with his plaudits especially when he was young Kenneth Branagh thinks he can do anything but this was a bit mediocre , A bit Don't look now a bit the original of the Haunting , but Agatha Christie , I don't think it is. I agree with @Britpopbaby - good actors wasted on a poor script & just some special effects.

rookiemere · 20/09/2023 18:34

We saw it last night. The last third or so was good enough, but for a relatively short film, my it was ploddy.

I just miss the humour of previous Poirots. Obviously David Suchet was the consummate Poirot, but Peter Ustinov was good as well. Branagh and the tedious back stories of war trauma and loss, is just tedious.

At least the other two films had some good scenery this was pretty much all inside apart from rainy Venice.

Lentilweaver · 20/09/2023 18:35

I hated it. Nothing to do with Christie or Halloween Party at all. I did like some of the cinematography. Gosh, the Christie heirs are desperate for dosh.

Medlady · 21/09/2023 08:39

It was very, very dull

Lentilweaver · 21/09/2023 08:44

The scene with the doctor in the closed room was just ridiculous. Can't say more as spoiler.

Britpopbaby · 21/09/2023 12:56

I’ve spoken to people who thought it was scary compared to the other two which I have not seen. I thought it wasn’t scary at all and was plodding. The denouncement ( I think that’s what they call it) was n’t very good. I am going to try and find the ITV version. I think that the ITV adaptations have more subtly too.

I would really like a bio film about Agatha Christie herself. I have watched the documentary that’s on Netflix ( I think) and enjoyed that.

Saw it today and not the biggest Dan, as a PP said the doctor in the room by himself was awful, and whilst the conclusion to the mystery was thought out some of it felt silly and it seemed like his detective skills came out of nowhere. There wasn't really any inclination he was working it out along the way just BAM! I've solved it!

EsmeShelby · 22/09/2023 18:30

They played fast and loose with Ariadne Oliver, which infuriated me.

It's on ITVX. I'm rewatching Poirot at the moment. Series 12 - episode 2.

From the trailer alone I would say the film bears very little resemblance to the book, so not reading the book would make little difference to your enjoyment/understanding.

Does anyone know when this will be available on Disney Plus? I will watch it on there but wouldn't pay cinema prices for the privilege.

TomatoSandwiches · 22/09/2023 21:10

It has awful reviews and tbh I'm positive KB is much more effective behind the screen imo.

OneFrenchEgg · 23/09/2023 09:03

Saw this yesterday without any knowledge of the plot. Dh fell asleep, it is quite slow. I think the gloomy unlit setting which is for most of it did make it drag. I didn't really connect with any of the characters as they were all quite unlikeable and stereotypes. Having said that I did enjoy the 'whodunnit' aspect and reminded myself I don't like Venice.

HermioneWeasley · 23/09/2023 09:14

I thought it was entertaining nonsense and blessedly short
