Recommendations for a ladies movie night

Bowbridge · 01/08/2023 18:07

My WI has a monthly movie night that I host bi-monthly. It is usually 8 ladies aged 45-70. We are looking for recommendations. So far we have seen:

What we did on our holiday (this was a big hit)
Lion
The Guernsey Literary and potato peel pie society
Parasite
Three Billboards
The Upside (another big hit)
Fisherman's friends
A Man called Otto
Wonder
Saving Grace (dull)
Thirteen Lives
Skin
Hidden Figures

Thinking of 'The Book Thief' next as it is one of my favourite films. Others have asked for a comedy or a rom com. Any recommendations?

Julie and Julia

Keep the suggestions coming as I will make note.

I love The lady in the Van, Calendar Girls, Eddy the Eagle, Beaches etc. Most will have seen these.
Parasite was a revelation to them and well out of their comfort zone. A couple did not like Thirteen Lives "too depressing" (but it ends happily!!)

Promising Young Woman
Little Women (recent version or the 90s one!)
Practical Magic
Pitch perfect

I liked The Lost City with Sandra Bullock if you want a romcom

Find it hard to recommend things based on age and gender...

What genres do you all like?

AnneKipankitoo · 01/08/2023 19:39

Do you like French films ?
C’est La Vie
Or there was that film with Omar Sy… I will need to look it up

AnneKipankitoo · 01/08/2023 19:40

Untouchable, Omar Sy

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 01/08/2023 19:42

We Bought a Zoo
Wild

bryceQ · 01/08/2023 19:44

Letters to Juliet is a really nice film

midsomermurderess · 01/08/2023 19:46

Vers Le Sud (Heading South). Sex tourism (women) in 1970s Haiti. Stars Charlotte Rampling. Maybe a bit heavy. But thought provoking; and beautifully shot, if nothing else.

Kaftankween · 01/08/2023 19:47

Crazy rich Asians

Screamingabdabz · 01/08/2023 19:47

Was going to recommend The Intouchables but I see that Upside was the American version!

‘Spy’ and ‘The Heat’ are two films that really centre women and are feel-good and hilarious. I would recommend Bridesmaids but I know it’s too crass for some.

TFZ9287 · 01/08/2023 19:48

If you like rom com's I would suggest while you were sleeping with Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman - it's an oldie but a goodie Smile

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/08/2023 19:49

Yes to Peanut Butter Falcon - it's lovely
Pride - if they're not prudes/homophobic

This sounds perfect. Thank you!

I hope you enjoy it, I think it’s a real gem!

Another one is Priceless, a French film which is utterly charming x

How about Women Talking? If you read a synopsis it'll sound very dark but though it's a really tough subject, it's handled beautifully. Definitely one to provoke thought and conversation.

Thewolvesarerunningagain · 01/08/2023 20:13

I Tonya (the Tonya Harding story starring Margot Robbie)
Cruella
The personal history of David Copperfield
