Well; I am almost lost for words.

The trailers give a glimpse of a film in the mould of Pride or the Full Monty, full of British pluck and the hope of something joyous.

Instead, it is an mawkish medley of “God bless the NHS and all who sail in her”, a hideous glimpse of the horrors of aging, a political point made with the subtlety of a brick, a massive dose of the pandemic horrors, and a random story twist (which was fairly obvious early on) which left a mish mash of disappointment and bewilderment by the end.

I don’t recommend 😂

'and a random story twist (which was fairly obvious early on) which left a mish mash of disappointment and bewilderment by the end.'

Just seen Mark Kermode's review - he thought it was a mess too, and hated the story twist which he thought made no sense. No intention of seeing it, but I'm intrigued!

Just left the cinema and have come on here to say exactly the same! What have I just watched? Awful, utterly awful.

I can’t even. I went to see this with my nearly 80 year old MIL and teenage daughters for Mother’s Day. I lost my lovely dad to Covid 3 years ago so suffice to say the ‘surprise’ Covid ward ending was fairly horrific. The whole thing was a car crash in slow motion (we watched Titanic in its 25th anniversary and that is a long film but Jesus this film just seemed so much longer despite being almost half the time). I can honestly say this was one of the worst things I have ever watched. I’d like my 1.5 back!

Thanks for the warning OP
I usually rush off to see anything with Dame Judi but not this!

I agree with what has been said, the twist/ending is ridiculous, it didn't fit and left me totally confused and depressed. Quite bored during the film, it dragged and then boom the last 20 minutes was like a different film.

Just came out of the cinema with me and DH saying WTF did we just watch? He was more confused than me as he slept through most of if

Awful. One of worst films ever. Like 3 films mashed together in the oddest way.
Was advertised as a feel good film. Really is not!

Didn’t dislike all of it but agree the ending was very odd and didn’t fit at all. Weird.

Just seen it and was distinctly underwhelmed! I love Jennifer Saunders but she wasn't right for the part and I struggled to hear what she was saying a lot of the time. The ending was bizarre. None of the actors were covered in glory to be honest. No depth, no warmth. I'm a massive Alan Bennett fan too.

Thanks for the heads-up, thought I'd go while the rest of the family watch Shazam, just cancelled my ticket.

I’m not usually a fan of superhero types of films but really enjoyed shazam

Another one who went thinking it was going to be one of these uplifting community spirit type films, to cheer my friend up.

The dark turn took us by surprise, and somehow seemed out of place. On the other hand, there was something Nurse Ratchet abouut Alma. It was pretty depressing in the end.

I did think about it but honestly, I never watch DC films (occasionally Marvel) and I wouldn't have the faintest idea what was going on. I will have a quiet afternoon at home by myself instead.

I went to see it yesterday and left the cinema part way through. I kept hoping that given the cast it would pick up, but realised it was past redemption for me.

My DM died last year in a care home, so of course I had a nightmare about her last night following on from everything the film raised with me.

Yes, I agree, that twist at the end spoiled the film for me. I wanted an uplifting, if not realistic, end!

Thanks😘I was going to go and see this just because of the cast list, but you've saved me the price of a cinema ticket and a box of popcorn.

Me and my 80 year old mum went to an afternoon showing. There were probably a dozen other elderly people watching.
When it finished there was total silence , then one lady said "well that cheered us all up didn't it"
Such an emotional and strange end. Was totally shocked. Mum said it's the worst film she's ever seen 😆

Pity I didn’t see these comments before I went and saw the film tonight. I too was expecting an uplifting film, thought it might be like Military Wives or Fishermen’s Friends with a singing competition or similar. Absolutely dire, it was. Totally depressing and bewildering. Taking a pulse with a thumb? Surely they have medical advisers to say that’s not right.

If I hadn’t have been with my friend I would’ve walked out. If I’d taken my Mum, before she recently died in hospital, I would’ve been mortified at her watching that.

Report
lollipoprainbow · 07/04/2023 08:42

The trailer for it definitely had an uplifting vibe like Calendar girls or Military wives. That's why I went to see it. Dire.
