Watching this today - will report back my thoughts. Loved the book and curious to see how Netflix interprets it.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 03/12/2022 13:30

The new remake

Aaah okay thank you

Love the Sean bean one. Will check out the netflix one now

RoachTheHorse · 03/12/2022 13:37

The one with Emma Corrin? I think I'll avoid. Sean Bean is and will always be my gamekeeper.

I quite enjoyed the BBC adaptation with what's his face from Game of Thrones, but not enough I'd go back to it!

DorritLittle · 03/12/2022 13:39

Gosh I loved the Sean Bean one.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 03/12/2022 16:30

Joely Richardson plays Mrs Bolton in this one! She played Lady Chatterly opposite the knee quivering Sean Bean

I looked up the history of the book in wiki earlier, interesting and how it was going to be called ‘John Thomas and Lady Jane’ - scandalous ! 😭 and checked BritBox for the Sean bean one but it’s not on there, would love to have watched that again. Surprised how many versions have been made as well.

Hels20 · 04/12/2022 19:14

Watched today and thought it was well done. Read the book 20 years ago so couldn’t remember the ending. Never saw Sean Bean version but am sure he would have been excellent in it.

thought Emma Corrin was excellent in it. Liked the link to the old version with Joely Richardson now playing Mrs Bolton.

babysteps22 · 04/12/2022 21:43

I thought it was really beautifully done. I preferred it to the Sean Bean version. It's one of my favourite books.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 04/12/2022 21:54

I really enjoyed it too and the guy playing Mellor is extremely sexy! Not usually a huge fan of Emma Corin but their characters had great chemistry.

I couldn’t remember the book ending neither I have a feeling it may have been an ambiguous one?

Just watched it - phwoar! DD wanted to watch it with me but she hates sex scenes so glad she’d gone to bed 😂. It was essentially a two hour long sex scene but none the worse for that.

Pickawindow · 06/12/2022 03:20

This was with a female director and it definitely had a female gaze for the sex scenes. Also, if there is one thing that drives me mad with British movies, it's the typical hot female lead with a not-so-hot male. I hate it when I just think "she is so out of his league, I don't find this believable.". And why do women have to be gorgeous but often the men just wouldn't be someone women would pick.

In this case the chemistry was great and Jack O'Connel as well as being a bit of rough in the woods, as Oliver, was very believable.
I haven't read the book but heard it focuses a lot on their inner thoughts so not sure if this was a successful translation to the screen of the book.

I liked the way they would part at the gate so that his realm was the fertile woods and hers was the mowed flat, manicured within an imch of its life, stillted heaviness of the Big House and its surroundings. With him she had freedom and sexual awakening. While in the house she was buried alive in boredom and lack of passion. The class divide and also untamed nature vs. a literal sexless, impotent upper class.

Cozytoesandtoast00 · 06/12/2022 06:22

I loved it. Really well made.

FancyFran · 06/12/2022 12:25

Filth, but I loved it.
I was just getting my pen ready to complain a male arse does not equal a full frontal lady garden when I got an eyeful. Well done Mellors.

Divebar2021 · 06/12/2022 12:30

Hmmmm might have to assess this myself 🤔. I can remember the publicity around the Sean Bean version which was slightly below the attention Colin Firth got for Mr Darcey ( but not a huge amount)

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 06/12/2022 12:34

Wasn't there an adaptation made with Richard Madden only a couple of years ago?

Yes, I liked that.

this one wasn't great, I got bored. Started well but lost pace and information. Clifford is almost a non character which seems a shame.

I haven't read the book though, so don't know which reflects it better.

Good lord Jack O'Connel you say? Just the thought and I've come over all funny.

Didn't know of the remake so thanks OP I'll be watching that!

It's good. Jack O' Connell has charisma.

FancyFran · 06/12/2022 19:37

@Pickawindow there was no manicured lawn here. Full 1970s bush.

Pipsickl · 06/12/2022 19:52

I quite enjoyed it (from a jack o Connell perspective 🤣) but felt it was slow in places.

TheOtherBoleynGirls · 06/12/2022 21:58

I’d really like to find something intelligent and educated about this, but I can’t. I didn’t actually like it that much - everyone tried, and it looked beautiful, but it lacked a fair bit of soul, and the dialogue was far too on the nose sometimes.

Having said that, I watched it avidly because I’d watch Jack O’Connell doing his Tesco shop. Between that and SAS Rogue Heroes I’m a happy woman this month.

Gardenerboo · 08/12/2022 14:27

Just finished watching this. Throughly enjoyed it although I now need a new wardrobe! Lady C’s clothes were stunning!
