Anyone going to see the new Downton film - I'm tempted

I suppose it is one of those things where you know what you are going to get but from the trailers it looks a bit like Agatha Christie "The Blue Train" I suspect I will go.

With a bit of luck it will be on television by Christmas, an ideal Christmas Day film.

Toddlerteaplease · 01/05/2022 23:10

Why was there a microphone in the servants hall. I couldn't work that bit out?

NancyJoan · 02/05/2022 08:09

Saw it last night, and loved it. Utterly silly, and a delight.

Taytocrisps · 02/05/2022 08:15

I saw it last night. I enjoyed it more than the first one. The plot is a tad farfetched but I'm sure most of the audience just relished another opportunity to spend time with the characters and setting (Downton) that we love. Without giving too much away, I'm delighted Barrow has bigger and better opportunities coming his way. Although Mary's reaction to the news was totally unrealistic.

Saw it last night too, really enjoyed it! Just lovely to see some of Edith/Bertie, Branson/Lucy, Bates/Anna, Isobel/Merton and Daisy/Andy in their happy ever afters.Glad they didn’t throw any unnecessary drama their ways. Nice to see the children growing up too although I got a bit confused as to which one was which at times! I thought Mary was pretty splendid, well on her way to becoming a dragon rather than a fool! I thought Cora’s storyline was a bit odd, all mysteriously melodramatic and then just resolved instantly in a conversation. Robert did look ill didn’t he? I guess he had that ulcer and emergency surgery in season 6, perhaps he has trouble digesting things properly now!

I happily accepted the random microphone being there, as the Mosely/Baxter scene was just lovely. I calculated that in todays money, he was being offered £50k/script with an extra £20k if it got made! Not bad! Although he can’t have been on awful money as a teacher surely? Better than when he was a road worker!

Violet - what can one way, loved it all. Giggled/snorted out loud in the cinema several times. And then cried later on too.

I wonder if they’ll ever do Downton : The Next Generation!?

Collardgreens · 02/05/2022 11:35

I will go with dd to the ‘Big Scream’ one. I haven’t seen the series (… and won’t see much of the film), but it is a good way to hide from the cleaning lady for the morning.

Theimpossiblegirl · 02/05/2022 11:38

I also saw it last night. It was lovely.
I'm now also looking forward to Mrs Harris goes to Paris and Where the Crawdads Sing.

Mommybunny · 02/05/2022 18:18

DH and I planned to go today and we asked DD15 on a whim if she wanted to join us (she hasn’t watched the series) and to my surprise and delight she did. I gave her a 15 minute potted history that in the end was pretty adequate as there was only one storyline I missed out (who was Me Mason?) and had to explain later.

Agree it does exactly what it says on the tin - hardly Citizen Kane in its cinematic worth - but by God it was gorgeous! Some classic lines and resolution of storylines and we all loved it.

Would love to talk about it without spoiling!

KangarooKenny · 02/05/2022 18:18

I’ll wait for it to come out on Sky

Mommybunny · 02/05/2022 18:18

who was Mr Mason, duh…

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 02/05/2022 19:26

Haven't seen it yet, but Mr Mason is Daisy's father-in-law from when she married the ex-footman William when he was on his deathbed from injuries sustained during WW1. As I recall, Mr Mason was getting rather keen on Mrs Patmore towards the end of the TV series. The young footman originally from London (Andy, I think) was also enjoying spending time over at Mr Mason's farm. Very conveniently, Mr Mason agreed to give up his original tenancy and take over the one given up by the couple who fostered Edith's little girl. They moved away in the hope that the wife would be able to get over her attachment to Marigold. Sad

rookiemere · 02/05/2022 19:35

I thought Mrs Patmore had bought a B&B at the end of the first film, so I was rather surprised to see her still in the kitchen.

Mommybunny · 02/05/2022 21:20

I knew who Mr Mason was, I just had missed him out in my 15 minute potted Downton history 😁

Goinghome20 · 02/05/2022 21:29

Saw it tonight and loved it.

Quite pacey and lots of fun
Laughed a lot and might have had a tear in my eye at one point.

Toddlerteaplease · 02/05/2022 22:51

I'm trying to workboat the timelines. If Robert was born in 1875, and Edith was born in 1891 or 1893. It gets mentioned in one episode. It doesn't work as he's have married very very young. Especially as Edith is the second child.

LemonViolet · 03/05/2022 14:26

I thought they were saying 1865 in the film, not 1875?

Mr Mason didn’t agree to move, he had to - he was a tenant on a different estate that was being carved up. Remember the episode when Daisy got in trouble for mouthing off at the estate sale about the injustice of it all? Then when Marigold’s adoptive parents moved away, the Crawleys were going to farm that land themselves and not take on a new tenant - remember Mary rescuing the dehydrated pigs with one of her suitors - but then because Mr Mason was in a bind, and happened to know about pigs, gave the tenancy to him instead.

Not that I’ve watch it it all a few times or anything.

Robert was born in 1865, they said in the film. And the Dowager was just married, so I reckon she must have been born around 1845. So about 94 or so in this film.

I loved it! Had my cheese platter and enjoyed every moment!

KatherineofGaunt · 03/05/2022 20:01

84! 1845 born, and the film in 1929 or so.

Bopahula · 03/05/2022 20:09

I'm planning on seeing this and I can't wait. :)

Toddlerteaplease · 03/05/2022 21:43

I must have miss heard. Watching the episode where Mary goes to Matthews grave and his dates are 1885-1921. Do the film would be 1928.

I enjoyed it. Better than the other film.

I wish they'd spent more time on Thomas's storyline. He deserved some proper lingering looks and a bit more build up.

I thought Hugh Bonneville looked very unwell and the creosote tan didnt mask it. I suppose they filmed the villa parts before the rest, hence him being so dark at the start of the film.

I thought that about Hugh Bonneville, he was very tanned but looked really unwell

MuchuseasaChocolateTeapot · 07/05/2022 06:40

I loved the film, much better than the first one. I would have loved it to be the start of a new series too. Henry should have come back at the end though.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/05/2022 06:44

The actor who played Henry was working on something else.

lisavanderpumpscloset · 07/05/2022 06:48

I loved the series but the first film was shite

Having said that, I plan on going to watch it by myself on my day off. Never been to the cinema alone. This seems like the perfect time to correct that Grin

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 07/05/2022 07:35

Went last night, enjoyed it enormously! Expected it to be absolute hokum, but with high production values, and was not disappointed. Grin
