I suppose it is one of those things where you know what you are going to get but from the trailers it looks a bit like Agatha Christie "The Blue Train" I suspect I will go.

I'm going tomorrow

kitcat15 · 29/04/2022 15:37

I’m going tomorrow….booked seats at our local Everyman for a bit of decadence

rookiemere · 29/04/2022 15:57

Going tomorrow- walked out of The Northman last weekend so at least Downton shouldn't have too much gratuitous violence.
I'm not expecting much from the plot I'm just there for the costumes and scenery- so excited about it being set in the South of France!

CatelynStark · 29/04/2022 16:02

I saw it at a preview (I won tickets and wouldn’t have gone otherwise). No spoilers but it’s absolutely lovely with lots of laughs and a few sniffles.
Loved every minute of it.

jay55 · 30/04/2022 06:49

I enjoyed it. Better than the other film.

I wish they'd spent more time on Thomas's storyline. He deserved some proper lingering looks and a bit more build up.

I thought Hugh Bonneville looked very unwell and the creosote tan didnt mask it. I suppose they filmed the villa parts before the rest, hence him being so dark at the start of the film.

It's ridiculously corny, but other bits are good. The film but could have been completely missed out!

Toddlerteaplease · 30/04/2022 16:21

And what's with the sun tans before they even get to France!

sashagabadon · 30/04/2022 17:13

Just back. It does what is says on the tin and is a a nice feel good jolly film.
I was very dubious about the idea you should inherit something very expensive off someone you spent a week with 70 years ago though when said person had a long term wife and adult child ( but luckily no grandchildren to muddy the waters) I was 🤔but then this gets explained away ( won’t say how ) and so justified but then this explanation turns out to be wrong so I was back to thinking this might all be legal but the morals are iffy. Just a plot device I know but I always though Lord Grantham an honourable man and not a grifter. But other than that it was enjoyable. My favourite character Daisy by a country mile!

Hugasauras · 30/04/2022 17:23

I really enjoyed it! Just what I had hoped for.

Toddlerteaplease · 30/04/2022 17:53

I can't believe that Daisy is still a
Kitchen maid after almost 20 years. And what happed to Carson's tremor!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/04/2022 17:58

The first one was so dire I couldn't bear it a second time round.

Friedaseyebrow · 30/04/2022 18:00

I saw it yesterday - enjoyable fluff! Wafer thin plot but they were almost laughing at themselves in some parts. Don't go expecting a great film, but it's definitely a comfort watch!

DockOTheBay · 30/04/2022 18:03

I watched the first film last night funnily enough. It was pretty boring. No antagonist or actual peril (Barrow nearly got arrested but didn't, over in 5 minutes, the visiting housekeepers were unfriendly, dealt with easily with no lasting consequences). It just wasn't that exciting. And I imagine the next one will be the same.

I am also a bit miffed that they obviously only did a film for the money. They could have made another series of the show instead.

tuliplover · 30/04/2022 18:31

I'll wait til it's out on tv.

Mindymomo · 30/04/2022 18:37

Going on Tuesday with my Son, it’s his birthday and we are both looking forward to it. Going to our local Everyman and having food there.

Wrong thread, @doveseternal, or are you calculating what it might cost to run Downton Abbey? Grin

Toddlerteaplease · 30/04/2022 19:25

Denka has aged a bit!

rookiemere · 01/05/2022 07:06

Are we allowed to talk about the film here ? Don't want to spoil it for people that haven't seen it, but I saw it last night and there are a few questions I wanted to ask .

sashagabadon · 01/05/2022 09:01

The plot twist is a little complicated, I had to spend a fair bit of time thinking about it and how it would affect literally everything else!
i think you’d have to have reasonable knowledge about the first season of Downtown Abbey and who Matthew was and why he was at Downtown in the first place and also background knowledge of England’s primogeniture rules. I have hazy knowledge and so I can’t really work it all out! Overthinking it I know 😂

Toddlerteaplease · 01/05/2022 09:58

@rookiemere me too!

Toddlerteaplease · 01/05/2022 10:34

My favourite thing about Downton is Cora and Roberts relationship. Loved it in this.

MustBeThursday · 01/05/2022 11:41

I want to see it (although probably won't get chance!) although I'll be a bit put off if Cora's accent is as dodgy as in the first film - it was so weird, like she'd forgotten how to do the accent she had in the series!

Robin233 · 01/05/2022 22:21

Saw it today.
Loved it.
Better than the first film - though I enjoyed that too.
Can't wait to see it again.
