Best war / true story films?

I've watched many war films, mainly ones about WW1 & WW2. (1917 is the best!!!)
However, recently I've been watching films based around Navy Seals.

Lone Survivor is one of my all time favourites!!

I haven't watched 12 Strong, 13 Hours or Hurt Locker, are they worth the watch? I know Hurt Locker is meant to be amazing but the other two have mixed reviews.

I really enjoy films based on true stories and true hero's!! Patriots Day, Deepwater Horizon, Captain Phillips, Lone Survivor, American Sniper etc.. can anyone recommend similar films?

Kajaki - brilliant
We Were Soldiers - second favourite after SPR

Agree with black hawk down and band of brothers.
The wind that shakes the barley is my recommendation. I watched it on YouTube. Think I might have found out about it on here.

My absolute best reccomendation is Band of Brothers, which is a series not a film.

Dilbertian · 30/03/2022 21:08

Exodus. Although the film is not as good as the book in the last part. Some of my older relatives escaped post-war Europe on similar ships, and say that the film reflects their experiences fairly accurately (apart from the hunger strike).

I was going to say American Sniper which is excellent

But also Black Hawk Down

alwayswrighty · 30/03/2022 21:29

Can't really add much more because I love BHD, We were Soldiers, Band of Brothers, etc.

I was hoping they'd make a film out of 'eight lives down' because my friend is in the book he died trying to defuse an ied but they didn't.

Au Revoir Les Enfants.

The true story of three Jewish children hiding almost in plain sight in France in WW2, and their fate.

Bonabee · 30/03/2022 21:39

Black Hawk Down
Born On The Fourth Of July

My absolute number one though is Cry Freedom chronicling the life and death of Steve Biko.
Breaks me every time, Denzil Washington and Kevin Kline are incredible.

The more recent tv series of Das Boot was also very good but definitely one you have to concentrate on as there are a lot of characters and it’s subtitled.

13 hours- secret soldiers of Benghazi.

This was just a brilliant film, One of my favourites

Dambusters
Reach for the Sky

Old films, and based on true stories, but worth watching.

Land of Mine

It's the only war film that made me truly wonder if I could actually handle its content/finish it. It's a tough watch. Amazing, amazing, amazing film. Very human. Very sad.

LoveFall · 31/03/2022 18:31

The Bridge on the River Kwai

NeedleNoodle3 · 31/03/2022 19:15

Hacksaw Ridge, one of my best films.

Came to suggest the same. One of this films that you maybe aren’t expecting a lot from but then it just blows you away. True story about German POWs in Denmark

Hacksaw Ridge, Lions for Lambs, 1917, Dunkirk, '71, The Wind that shakes the barley and Band of brothers were all great. The Wild Geese is brilliant as well.

DestinyIsAll · 16/04/2022 21:39

Days of Glory (Indigènes) is truly excellent. It’s French but really worth a watch.

I agree with Hacksaw Ridge too, it’s superb.

There’s also Born on the Fourth of July.

crystaljohnsi · 17/04/2022 16:45

I watched "king Richard". It was an interesting movie. And I really loved it.

TheFoldOx · 17/04/2022 22:11

I watched "Kursk" last night, a dramatisation of the loss of the Russian submarine. Despite the fact that the outcome was known, it was a very good film, good tension and seemingly realistic. It stars Mattias Schoenaerts, Colin Firth and Max von Sydow. Available on Amazon Prime.

FlowerOfTheValley · 22/04/2022 16:43

Operation Daybreak. Very moving WWII film based on true events with the most haunting music.

Hacksaw Ridge as previously mentioned is excellent.

Another vote for an excellent non war film, Lion.

FlowerOfTheValley · 22/04/2022 16:46

Empire of the Sun is fiction but is a brilliant epic war film.

BorgQueen · 23/04/2022 18:02

Anthropoid, based on the attempted assasination of Reinhard Heydrick in Prague.
Passchendale with Paul Gross.
Flyboys.
All the Kings men.
