Saddest film you've ever seen?

So I'm sitting here watching Seven Pounds (Will Smith)
I've seen this film loads of times, but it never fails to make me cry. Like proper ugly cry, tears streaming, everything.
This is the only film that does this to me. I think it's so underrated.

What movies do this to other people??

Me Before You! Makes me bawl every single time!

Just watched The Road last night. I read the book years ago and it destroyed me then, and no film comes close. I had never wanted to watch it because I cried for ages after finishing the book but me and DH have a thing called Film Club where weekly we each get to pick a film - no objections, no questions allowed. So he picked the Road last night.

I tear up a lot of films and many of listed have had me crying. But man - The Road - I was weeping. Proper sobbing. I just couldn’t stop. It got me right in the gut and I was crying and unable to speak to DH for about ten minutes. I can’t even articulate why it got me so bad - the premise is obviously so sad. But I think it’s that it’s almost life affirming in a way, despite the horror of it. It’s the kind of film where when it ends, and you come back to reality, you almost don’t want to and want instead to continue back with the characters. Still feeling fragile over it this morning, as you can all probably tell!

Brokeback Mountain. It's also my favourite film. Makes me sob everytime though

I used to cry every week at The Littlest Hobo on tv

Life is beautiful and grave of the fireflies.

Eastie77 · 02/01/2020 21:39

Philomena. I watched it when DD was a couple of months old at a Baby & Parent screening and wept uncontrollably at the end.

spongedog · 02/01/2020 21:46

Love Story for me.

TheReef · 02/01/2020 21:46

The boy in the striped pyjamas

Kalifa · 02/01/2020 21:52

Eternal winter. It’s a Hungarian film about the gulag.

MissDelacroix · 04/01/2020 22:03

Maybe not the saddest in the general meaning of "weepies" but definitely thought provoking...so, my nomination would be American History X. Watch it. Wink

My sisters keeper

‘Gorillas in the Mist’. The cinema was eerily quiet as it finished apart from the sounds of teary sniffs.

raspberrymolakoff · 05/01/2020 17:01

Ring of Bright Water.

Llouisa1980L · 05/01/2020 17:52

Green mile and The boy in the striped pajamas

FenellaVelour · 05/01/2020 18:46

So many.

A Monster Calls (though the book makes me cry even more)
Green Mile, to the point I couldn’t watch it all the way through when I first tried.
Schindlers List. Absolute sobbing.
The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas
Cinderella Man (I think through fear of what might come)

I recently cried at the end of Marriage Story watching Adam Driver’s emotions come crashing in to his usually stoic face. Astounding performances in that movie.

And today JoJo Rabbit absolutely flattened me in one scene in particular.

Rosie2000 · 10/01/2020 20:06

I have just seen 1917 which is just gut wrenching and emotionally draining

Stuart Little

HandsOffMyRights · 10/01/2020 20:12

NRTF but I never forget The Changeling with Angelina Jolie. It's a disturbing film.
