Saddest film you've ever seen?

So I'm sitting here watching Seven Pounds (Will Smith)
I've seen this film loads of times, but it never fails to make me cry. Like proper ugly cry, tears streaming, everything.
This is the only film that does this to me. I think it's so underrated.

What movies do this to other people??

Schindler's List
Ghost
The old couple on the bed in Titanic
...and the end of Cool Runnings

Ugly crying 😭

katiegoestoaldi I cried a lot at the orphanage too. It stayed with me a long time.

I used to regularly rewatch Dead Poets Society, my teenage favourite but I don't think I could watch 'Oh Captain My Captain" now. Too sad.

Have just had a good very in cinema at 1917.

The film that had me properly sobbing was Young@Heart. Its fantastic.

BadMoon · 11/01/2020 19:34

Breaking the Waves. I saw it at the cinema years ago and just sat their sobbing as the light went up. A film called Kids also had the same effect on me.

BadMoon · 11/01/2020 19:35

Oh yes - The Orphanage too! Devastating and terrifying.

MsMarvel · 11/01/2020 19:38

Becoming Jane made me sob big ugly tears, which i wasnt expecting.

Think it was the contrast to her not gettinf her happy ending compared to the endings she wrote for all her heroines.

Thestrangestthing · 11/01/2020 19:40

Loads but changeling always springs to mind first because I'm pretty sure it's a true story. Horrific.

KidCaneGoat · 11/01/2020 19:42

Dancer in the Dark. It’s unbearable.

BertieDrapper · 11/01/2020 19:43

My DD is loving "inside out" at the moment... she's 4..... we both cry every time Bing Bong says "take her to the moon for me".... gets me every time!

wendywoopywoo222 · 11/01/2020 19:51

I cry at most films but Last Snows of Spring and Awakenings are the worst.

DjMomo · 11/01/2020 19:53

Mystify, the Michael Hutchence documentary on BBC IPlayer.
Okay, it’s not the saddest but really touching.
I always thought that Michael Hutchence was a spoilt rock god who wanked himself to death. How wrong I was.
There was a real depth to him and he was a really nice, down-to-earth and loveable bloke. I didn’t know what triggered a series of events that lead up to his suicide, as he kept it a secret from the public.
A really well made documentary.

“It’s a wonderful life” leaves me sobbing Sad

QueSera · 11/01/2020 20:01

Old Yeller 😪😪😪
I imagine that Watership Down might be one of the saddest films, hence why I've never been able to bring myself to watch it 😪
Adult films:
The English Patient - extremely sad, but still my favourite film of all time.
Manchester by the Sea - oh my god, an amazing film, but utterly devastating 😪😪😪😪😪

Philomena had me crying so much DH woke up & thought there was a earthquake as the bed was shaking!

CanIGoHomeNowPlease · 11/01/2020 20:35

Million Dollar Baby

I cry at everything, but I distinctly remember not wanting to watch it, but then being talked into it by my BF and then sobbing at the end and having a right go at him because it was so sad.

Also did proper sobbing crying in the cinema at Gladiator and randomly King Kong

Babdoc · 11/01/2020 20:35

Shadowlands. I saw it not long after DH died, and the bit where Anthony Hopkins (as CS Lewis) is sitting in front of the Narnia wardrobe with his stepson, when his wife has just died - it was too close to home and I just sat and sobbed uncontrollably in the cinema. I think because it was so dignified, British and understated - they didn’t lay it on with a trowel, and he was filmed from behind, so you only saw his and the child’s backs, and the way his shoulders slumped, not their faces.
That was over twenty years ago and I haven’t been able to watch it since.

MrHaroldFry · 11/01/2020 20:36

Louis Malle's Au revoir les enfants

beautifulstranger101 · 11/01/2020 20:38

The stoning of Soraya M (horrific- get chills thinking about it and based on true story)

The elephant man- omgggg so sad

Dancer in the dark- Bjork starts to go blind, then things just get worse and worse and just when you think things cant get any worse they do

OttolenghiPomBear · 11/01/2020 20:45

Cloud Atlas

I believe death is only a door. One closes, and another opens. If I were to imagine heaven, I would imagine a door opening. And he would be waiting for me there

kazza446 · 11/01/2020 20:46

I cry at everything!! I was asked to leave the cinema when I was a child for crying so much at ET!!!
Ones that have made me ugly cry are;
The green mile
The awakenings
Schindlers list

I am plucking up courage to watch a star is born. Need to be alone for that one..

Daren’t watch the boy in striped pyjamas! I read the book on holiday last year and it thoroughly ruined my holiday!!

Qwertyguerty · 11/01/2020 20:47

Coco by Pixar

My mother has Alzheimer's and the way the grandmother storyline pans out kills me every time

MsTSwift · 11/01/2020 20:51

Am I the only weirdo that sobbed at la la land?! The end with the what could have been carousel bit. I was with my pre teen dds who were mystified at why I was so upset !

Star is born left me cold I thought he was quite abusive to her

PeytonManning · 11/01/2020 20:54

Miracle in Cell Number Seven. I ugly loud cried at that one...in the middle of a plane.

rwalker · 11/01/2020 21:05

Not so much a film but documentary. A young lad at school top sports pupil had accident and told he would be unlikely walk again. made a miraculous recover partly due to his PE teacher helping him contact sports were out of the question so they took up swimming .With the goal of swimming the channel .
He did it teacher dived in and swum the last bit with him. They got to the shore the elation hugging dancing and jumping around everyone cheering. They got back in the boat and film cuts .
The teacher collapsed and died in the boat absolute heartbreaking .
