Do I let my 5yr old watch Jaws?

Would you?

He currently watches all of the superhero (iron man, Spider-Man, ant man, guardians of the galaxy, captain America, avengers, Thor) and the villains don't scare him in those.

I got him a Jaws top from Next and he wants to see the film.

Coconuts!
Those hairy little bastards kill more people than sharks every year too.
We need a movie about that.

😂

BeyondDrinksAndKnowsThings · 22/07/2017 23:32

Weebo, I was thinking I'd strap him down and make him watch anyway. Perhaps while blasting out Beethoven. A la clockwork orange...

Oh and he loved clockwork orange!
(Now I am joking, I feel I should point this out)

BeyondDrinksAndKnowsThings · 22/07/2017 23:32

He didn't like that film. Much preferred the novel

Weebo · 22/07/2017 23:44

You are stealth boasting now, Beyond. :o

BeyondDrinksAndKnowsThings · 23/07/2017 09:39

Maybe a little Wink

Bananamama1213 · 25/07/2017 13:15

He doesn't seem to scare easily, he understands if something is real or not.

He LOVED Jurassic World. Watched it constantly. (We had already seen it and warned him that it's not real, and we did watch it with him).

My little sister watched it when she was 7 and she liked it - but she's weird anyway haha.

But! We have decided (even before reading this comments as I forgot I posted it) that we won't let him

he understands if something is real or not.

I understood that the shark wasn't real either, but phobias/fear aren't always based on reality.

Once you've watched it, it's too late to unwatch it Sad

Isn't Jurassic World a 12? It's quite graphic in places. Blood and guts, people eaten.

Bananamama1213 · 25/07/2017 19:16

@gluteustothemaximus

I believe Jurassic World is a 12A.
Yeah it is kind of graphic. With being eaten etc.
But we stayed with them the whole time and explained everything BEFORE the eating etc happened.
Not that they had any questions or even cared really!

My daughter watched it with us and she was nearly 4. She wasn't phased by it at all either.

I remember watching the first one when I was younger (probably around 6) and I used to run past windows because I thought there was a dinosaur out there...
But then I also used to think ET was hiding under a tablecloth on our landing so hated walking past that.

BeyondDrinksAndKnowsThings · 25/07/2017 19:24

Bananaman - with the fear of ET - are you actually me?! Grin

BeyondDrinksAndKnowsThings · 25/07/2017 19:25

Blood, guts, gore - no problem
Wrinkly alien in kids film and I still have nightmares as an adult!!!

BeyondDrinksAndKnowsThings · 25/07/2017 19:25

Bananamama corrected to bananaman, oops!

gluteustothemaximus · 25/07/2017 20:16

Pretty sure it is a 12, don't think it's a 12A.

On common sense media it says:

Parents need to know that Jurassic World is more violent and terrifying than the original Jurassic Park. Since the titular theme park is actually open and filled with visitors, the ensuing body count when the dinos run amok is much higher than in the previous films (including some major supporting characters), and there are many intense scenes of sustained terror, suspense, and peril (including kids in danger). People are eaten, torn to shreds, trampled, and severely injured. Language is infrequent (occasional use of "st" and "damn"), and there are a couple of kisses and suggestive remarks. Mature tweens and teens who are fans of suspense/action (and still fond of dinosaurs) will be thrilled just make sure they can handle the truly jump-worthy scares.

Of course certificates are guides, and parents use their own judgement - and usually I am very very liberal and open minded when it comes to parents doing their own thing (hate judgements of any kind) but 4 and 5 year olds watching a gruesome 12....I really don't agree with it.

By the same token, Jaws is a 12, and gruesome too, so if they're already desensitised - why not go for it.

This site is really helpful when deciding what to watch: www.commonsensemedia.org/movie-reviews/jaws

Shockers · 25/07/2017 20:18

No! I was 12 (it was a 12 certificate when it was released).

I'm now 51 and still have the collywobbles about swimming in deep sea (off a boat). I have to though, so the legacy of watching Jaws doesn't affect my kids!

BeyondDrinksAndKnowsThings · 25/07/2017 20:21

Again, the version of jaws shown on tv is a pg, they cut bits out. (Ha!)

Caprianna · 25/07/2017 20:22

No! I watched it as a teen and I am scared of sharks in the local swimming pool. Traumatised for life!

Thornyprick · 25/07/2017 20:27

Jurassic park is a very different thing to jaws
As are all the superhero movies
It's very obviously not real life.
Jaws is very suspenseful and quite scary

I have a 9 year old who watches 12 superhero movies, and Jurassic movies but I would let him watch Jason Bourne or mission impossible type movies because it's much more true to life(if far fetched!)
And he's not watching Jaws either.

AssassinatedBeauty · 25/07/2017 20:28

Do you know which bits are cut for TV? Are you sure it's definitely cut, even if you're accessing via an on demand service? Why would they cut it for that?

OhSoggyBiscuit · 27/07/2017 12:22

I watched it for the first time at 15 in school and screamed and ran out of the room once Jaws claimed his first victim!!

wars81 · 28/07/2017 13:44

i think 5 is a little tto young for jaws, maybe start him on something easier, like the original terminator or robocop!

HalfShellHero · 28/07/2017 13:50

Nope nope nope its much more frightening than the likes of jurrassic park.

HalfShellHero · 28/07/2017 14:02

Hmm i think they do sometimes its aired at like 5pm ...im surprised to see how many already family films are hacked to bits for tv airing like the great outdoors and hocus pocus...theyres a bit where (the great outdoors) the old man cabin owner runs in to shoot the bear with a gun thats also a lamp John Candy says "wth are you doing its a lamp!" "Yeah but its loaded" ...It was cut! Not shooting the bear in the bum..that bit!so bizarre ...anyhoo complete derail sorry . But yeah Jaws is too Scary.

OytheBumbler · 10/08/2017 22:20

Never mind kids, I'm not sure there's many adults who would jump happily into the sea after watching Jaws for the first time!
