Do I let my 5yr old watch Jaws?

Would you?

He currently watches all of the superhero (iron man, Spider-Man, ant man, guardians of the galaxy, captain America, avengers, Thor) and the villains don't scare him in those.

I got him a Jaws top from Next and he wants to see the film.

Personally I wouldn't call a PG or 12A certified film "adult".
I also disagree that she hasn't really seemed to understand it. I think she understood it perfectly. As a fictional story designed to scare people.
My other, slightly older, daughter doesn't like scary films. Coraline was too much for her. So me and DD2 will be watching Miss Peregrine's School for Peculiar Children when she is out.

Smellbellina · 22/07/2017 18:53

if this is true, this is very disturbing, and your DD should see a professional, and you should not be encouraging this.
Haha! Which professional do you suggest?

elQuintoConyo · 22/07/2017 18:59

My 5.5yo has seen it several times:

In utero.
6mo
1.5yo
2.8yo
3.9yo
4yo
4.10yo
5yo.

The only time he jumped was in utero.

No, it isn't an appropriate film for a 5yo. FFS.

But we often watch Walking Dead en famile and laugh at the Hallowe'eny-ness of it Hmm

Haha! Which professional do you suggest?

I would start with your GP, and maybe request a referral to pediatric psychiatry?

( IF what you said was true, not some sort of joke)

EpoxyResin · 22/07/2017 19:30

Yeah, knowing a film is fictional is one thing, but having no emotional reaction to realistic depictions of multiple gory deaths - fictional or not - at FIVE YEARS OLD... I wouldn't be cheering too loudly about that. In fact I'd be grateful for the potential explanation of "not fully understanding" rather than being so quick to dismiss it.

EssieTregowan · 22/07/2017 19:32

FFS it is NOT that gory. My ds absolutely loves 'jump scares', and that's why he loves the film.

It's not like he's watching Saw.

EpoxyResin · 22/07/2017 19:37

To be fair I have a very low tolerance for "gore", so perhaps it really is me, but surely severed limbs are gory? What about severed heads??

AssassinatedBeauty · 22/07/2017 19:38

I sometimes think I must live in an alternative universe to some people. No it's not like watching Saw, which for the benefit of doubt is never suitable for 5 yr olds, but that doesn't mean it's suitable viewing! The severed leg floating down, the crab covered woman's arm and hand, the decomposed severed head, the bloody death of the swimming women who is quite distressingly crying "it hurts!" as she's dying, the eating of Quint.. yeah, totally fine for a 5 year old.

Weebo · 22/07/2017 19:43

God no. Jaws scares the shite out of me.

However, I don't think the children who enjoy it are in anyway disturbed and in need of psychiatry. :o

It's hardly a snuff movie FGS. It's not real.

Mrswinkler · 22/07/2017 19:46

No. My DP had put his foot down until DS is older. He watched it when 8 and it fucked him up.

MipMipMip · 22/07/2017 19:58

No don't! There is a big difference between fantasy (non scary) and real (potentially terrifying because it could happen ).

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 22/07/2017 20:01

She talked about sharks, said she felt they were misunderstood and wouldn't really eat people

Hopefully you've taught her that they are dangerous, they aren't misunderstood and they can and do eat people.

Otherwise you're doing her a disservice.

Smellbellina · 22/07/2017 20:05

I think me and DD both feel that living in a land locked county, it's not something we need to worry about too much on a day to day basis.
Should we choose to go surfing off the coast of Australia any time soon, we will certainly give it more thought.

Smellbellina · 22/07/2017 20:09

MH services, especially for children, are overstretched enough userwhatever without people requesting referrals because their child likes Jaws.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 22/07/2017 20:10

So you haven't corrected her, then.

Excellent parenting there 👍

Smellbellina · 22/07/2017 20:15

Epoxy she's upset if someone is hurt in real life, or sad etc so I really don't find it a cause for concern. It's just her.
If I only had DD1 I'd think the same as you. But DD2 is DD2. She likes a good scare. Some people do.

Meeep · 22/07/2017 20:18

Wow I'm just here to say I am so impressed by these people with five and six year olds watching 12 and 15 rated films. You're really winning at parenting with your brave kids.

Smellbellina · 22/07/2017 20:19

Of course I haven't encouraged her to think Jaws is a realistic representation of sharks! Even Peter Benchley has said he regrets writing it as Jaws is totally unrealistic and has been damaging to a species that is already under threat.
She probably has a better grasp on it than you from the sounds of it.

Smellbellina · 22/07/2017 20:20

And again it's been rated as a PG and a 12A!

loveslipstick · 22/07/2017 20:21

No. I am scarred as an adult because of watching that film at older than he is

prettybird · 22/07/2017 20:21

I'm 56 and still not seen Jaws and never will ShockBlush scaredy cat who gets influenced by mood music Blush

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 22/07/2017 20:22

Smellbellina I didn't say that. I asked if you have corrected her when she said she didn't think sharks are people.

Jaws aside, sharks DO eat people and letting her linger on the assumption that they are friendly creatures that don't is wrong and dangerous.

Sabistick · 22/07/2017 20:22

Its jaws, of course its not suitable.

I think you know it really .

Nor only is it gorey but it has just the amount of trigger elements to give your kid sleepless nights for years.

Crispbutty · 22/07/2017 20:23

No i wouldn't.

It's the one film that gave me nightmares for years as a kid because my mother took me to see it at the cinema when it first came out. The half eaten head freaked me out. I was 6.

Weebo · 22/07/2017 20:24

Sounds like spot-on parenting to me, Smell.

Sharks are misunderstood and are nothing like Jaws.

Absolutely fascinating creatures.
