Do I let my 5yr old watch Jaws?

Would you?

He currently watches all of the superhero (iron man, Spider-Man, ant man, guardians of the galaxy, captain America, avengers, Thor) and the villains don't scare him in those.

I got him a Jaws top from Next and he wants to see the film.

Actual LOL at a child being taken into care because he watched Spider-Man.

Give over.

Weebo · 22/07/2017 22:44

I'm saying nothing.

Smellbellina · 22/07/2017 22:45

Well I will wait for the "Jaws issue" it's been a few years but there's still time. Oh and you missed the PG out.
IF DD has a problem and in your own words is warped due to her love of scary stories but hides it so well no one but an anonymous user on the internet has noticed, at least I have the consolation she could give Dexter a run for his money.

well, if you think it is funny, then you are incredibly ignorant. this film was a 12, the boy had an emotional age of around 7, it caused him deep and lasting distress.

Hilarious. I pissed myself laughing, it was such a hoot,

nothing hidden about it

Weebo · 22/07/2017 22:49

Well forcing a child to watch something that causes them distress is an entirely different thing, isn't it?

Beyond and Smell, if your children had shown even a smidgeon of distress or apprehension about watching this film what would your first reaction have been?

Smellbellina · 22/07/2017 22:49

Give over user you and I both know that boy was not placed in care due to watching one film.

user1497480444 · 22/07/2017 22:52

no, like I said, it was one of three or four reasons, the others were untidy house, and others of a similar nature i can't remember.

But he didn't watch it just once, he watched it almost compulsively

LenGoodmansPetLlama · 22/07/2017 22:54

User - why are you so intent on upsetting everyone? This is the second thread (mine being the other) where you've managed to make yourself sound unhinged

user1497480444 · 22/07/2017 22:56

by "unhinged" do you mean "better informed than you are"

user1497480444 · 22/07/2017 22:58

I am not out to upset anybody, but there are posters with little or no understanding about child development who post "facts" that are completely and demonstrably wrong. This poster, claiming her 5 year old child's reaction to watching Jaws is a healthy one, is totally wrong, the child's reaction is very concerning

Weebo · 22/07/2017 23:01

Claptrap, guff, blather, BOLLOCKS.

ANYWAY! Smell did you know there are a few websites where you can track tagged sharks?

I like this one as you can keep an eye on individual ones (they all have very normal names :o )

Your blossoming psychopath DD might be interested in having a look.

Smellbellina · 22/07/2017 23:02

by "unhinged" do you mean "better informed than you are"
Don't be silly it's obvious from your posts that you're not as well informed as you think. But you do have passion I will give you that.
Len it's Saturday night, the users are about don't take it to heart.

LenGoodmansPetLlama · 22/07/2017 23:03

No, no. I do mean unhinged. You've made yourself sound completely insane

And rude. Extremely rude

Anyway - I'm not hijacking this thread to argue with you; you're the professional 😂

Smellbellina · 22/07/2017 23:05

Oh weebo I didn't, thank you! Obviously I should be teaching DD not to let herself pet and be eaten by a shark on the street, but tracking tagged sharks sounds so much more fun!

LenGoodmansPetLlama · 22/07/2017 23:06

Smell - you should see what User has subjected me to all day, as I said on my own thread - I wouldn't want this person anywhere near adults; never mind children

As you were 😬

I saw the film, as previously mentioned, around 6 years of age. I also went to Universal Studios and went on the Jaws ride - have to say, the ride freaked me out a little bit more than the film did

Fantastic film all the same

Weebo · 22/07/2017 23:07

You know, statistically, cows are more dangerous. They cause more fatalities per year than sharks.

Udderly terrifying.

user1497480444 · 22/07/2017 23:09

What is insane?

explaining that horror films can cause serious long lasting trauma that can manifest itself as various forms of mental illness in adult life?

pointing out that a posters child is already showing clear evidence of such disassociation and trauma?

informing her that this will be seen as a safe guarding issue, and will be taken seriously.

Do you honestly think she is better off not knowing these things?

Do you think her child is better off if she continues blythly unaware?

Or do you think she might think twice now, and care for her child slightly better, and maybe mitigate some of the possible damage.

Maybe you think i should keep my understanding of these issue to myself, in case some one thinks I'm rude, or insults me?????

I am going to sleep with a clear conscience, because I have given the poster, ( and anyone else reading, who might have seen similar reactions in young children) the facts. I hope she acts on them, but nothing more I can do.

Smellbellina · 22/07/2017 23:14

Haha hands up I have told DC I am pretty sure a cow would eat us if they got the opportunity so not to sweat their Macdonalds. We saw it on The Simpsons that sealed the deal.
Weirdly growing up in land locked farm country they are more cautious of cattle and sheep (Black Sheep anyone?) than sharks. The weirdos.

Neuroticwoman · 22/07/2017 23:14

Entirely anecdotal but I'm sure it was a PG when I was a child.
Not my cup of tea but was a Spielberg/Williams collaboration which I always thought were ok?
Again not my instigation but my 7 yr old has seen it (with in laws/dh) and enjoyed it.
I have concerns about bad language, sex and violence. Whilst 'Jaws' is probably not an accurate portrayal of shark behaviour and is violent, it is not gun/knife violence man on man (from my recall), and I don't recall bad language/sex from film.

Weebo · 22/07/2017 23:18

Coconuts!

Those hairy little bastards kill more people than sharks every year too.

We need a movie about that.

Smellbellina · 22/07/2017 23:20

Using "children" as a blanket description of anyone under a certain age and therefore ascribing hopes, fears and personalities to them simply based on that age bracket is insane I think.
As I said in my first post it depends upon the child
The BBFC would seem to agree.
Goodnight user

gluteustothemaximus · 22/07/2017 23:23

I watched Jaws at around 6/7 years. Wish I never bloody had.

Am still petrified of sharks, the sea, and swimming.

It is not suitable for a 5 year old. There's a million other films a 5 year old could watch.

gluteustothemaximus · 22/07/2017 23:25

Then again, I wouldn't let a 5 year old watch the other films, that your DS already has.
