Do I let my 5yr old watch Jaws?

Bananamama1213 · 22/07/2017 09:32

Would you?

He currently watches all of the superhero (iron man, Spider-Man, ant man, guardians of the galaxy, captain America, avengers, Thor) and the villains don't scare him in those.

I got him a Jaws top from Next and he wants to see the film.

I don't see what a 5 year old would get out of it.
It's a slow burner at times horribly tense and the best bit quints monologue about the USS Indianapolis would be lost on them.

That's before the rotten head and dead child

I'd say no too

OhPuddleducks · 22/07/2017 16:31

I saw Jaws when I was five and was so scared when I saw the shark that I threw up. I'm in my thirties now and still can't really watch it without feeling queasy.

Figgygal · 22/07/2017 16:31

Oh and my 5 year old watched Jurassic world with his daddy that to my mind wasn't suitable either

RockyBird · 22/07/2017 16:35

I took my then 3 year old on the Jaws ride at Universal Studios. She was at the seat on the boat nearest the shark. I've never seen a kid move so fast.

She has blocked it out no memory of it.

GahBuggerit · 22/07/2017 16:36

I totally ignore ratings and use my own judgement. Jaws is a bit too......... psychological I think??? The music and feelings of dread etc, I find films like this and hero films nowadays lack this and are more basic in their approach iyswim

Has he seen Gremlins? My DC love it

Yogagirl123 · 22/07/2017 16:36

Nooo! You will never be able to get DS the in bath or swimming pool, I can remember being scared to sit on the loo!

TinyRick · 22/07/2017 16:38

I rewatched it recently as a 30 something year old.

Bloody brilliant film.

Sooo not acceptable for a 5yo.

EssieTregowan · 22/07/2017 16:39

My five yo DS2 loves it! It's right up there with Star Wars. It's a PG, we've got it on DVD.

He loves Gremlins as well. My other two are teenagers so he's had quite the education.

SisterMoonshine · 22/07/2017 16:39

It bothers me MORE when children are desensitised and not bothered by intense scenes.

ChoudeBruxelles · 22/07/2017 16:39

I let ds (11) watch it recently. He's been asking for ages but if said no as I remember being terrified as a child watching it. Ds actually laughed at the shark bits.

GahBuggerit · 22/07/2017 16:40

And how about xmen has he seen any of those?

AssassinatedBeauty · 22/07/2017 16:59

The decapitated head and the woman's corpse on the beach, the killing of the woman swimming, the killing of Quint, all far too graphic an adult for a 5 year old. I'm surprised it's even a consideration.

The other films you list seem to be all 12As, and I'm surprised that anyone would think a 5 year old would be ok to see those too. The themes are adult and there's a level of violence that I wouldn't be happy with.

MeltorPeltor · 22/07/2017 17:03

No. NO. NO!!! Hell No!

My cousin made me watch it age 6, I'm still traumatised and I hate deep water, boats, going in the sea etc

No way Jose!

everythingissoblinkinrosie · 22/07/2017 17:38

No. Just .. no. Why do you need to ask?

Blossomdeary · 22/07/2017 17:45

This has to be a wind-up - surely no sensible parent would let a 5 year old watch Jaws? FGS get a grip and behave like a responsible parent. I've heard it all now.

biscuitmillionaire · 22/07/2017 18:00

Yes OP, and let your 2 year old watch the Exorcist and your 1 yr old watch Dawn of the Living Dead. After all, they've already seen Alien so why not?

EpoxyResin · 22/07/2017 18:03

Jesus, no! How many people are eaten alive in your standard super-hero flick??

Smellbellina · 22/07/2017 18:05

My 5 year old loved it, it left a lasting love of sharks.
But, she really likes to be scared and didn't really find it scary enough.
Depends on the child I think.

AssassinatedBeauty · 22/07/2017 18:19

Smellbellina what was her reaction to the scene where the woman is eaten alive whilst swimming near the buoy at night? Did she enjoy that and what sort of questions did she ask you about it?

Also, the part where the decomposed severed head falls out of the boat, what was her reaction there? Did she ask you anything later on about what that was about?

When Quint was getting his legs eaten before being totalled taken, was your 5 year old scared or excited? What would you say her favourite part of the film was?

Smellbellina · 22/07/2017 18:27

She didn't consider any of it be real. The head she said looked like a Halloween mask. There were a couple of bits that made her jump which she enjoyed.
I don't know what her favourite part was I can ask her later.
She talked about sharks, said she felt they were misunderstood and wouldn't really eat people and could we find out more about them. So we watched a couple of nature programs and she got a book.

BeyondDrinksAndKnowsThings · 22/07/2017 18:30

My five year old loves Jaws. I'm not even joking - he's seriously obsessed with sharks.

AssassinatedBeauty · 22/07/2017 18:37

Great white sharks really will eat people though, or at least bite them enough to seriously injure or kill them. Clearly we're not their preferential prey, but that doesn't mean they'll swim past and leave you alone.

I'm glad your daughter hasn't seemed to really understand the film and that it seemed unreal to her. It would be worse if she'd really got the horror of it and of the deaths.

There must be plenty of great nature documentaries about sharks you could have watched instead, rather than an adult horror/suspense film about them.

user1497480444 · 22/07/2017 18:41

But, she really likes to be scared and didn't really find it scary enough.

if this is true, this is very disturbing, and your DD should see a professional, and you should not be encouraging this.

Mrskeats · 22/07/2017 18:45

Can't believe you are asking this
Obviously no

Cheerybigbottom · 22/07/2017 18:50

No way. Let him watch shark tale or something.
