Have you ever walked out of the theatre or cinema? Why?

I was at the theatre last night. The play was 16+ and clearly stated it contained swearing and sexual references in its advertising and BOY did it. The people next to us walked out after the umpteenth wank joke and I was like Shock I've never seen that happen before. And surely if something states upfront what it's about you don't hoik your bosoms and get professionally offended and make for the exit?

Years ago I walked out of the Oliver Stone film Nixon. At least 10 people had left before us. It was utter, utter crap, almost incomprehensible.

I didn't walk out but I fell asleep during the musical Chicago. My friend was very offended. Grin

I've also slept through the Usual Suspects - twice. And It's a Wonderful Life - numerous.

underneaththeash · 05/06/2016 21:30

I walked out of a Book of Mormon - I don't mind swearing and daft religions are fair game, but, even if done in an ironic way, people starving in Africa shouldn't be something joked about on stage. I just didn't feel comfortable watching it.

I was walked out of reservoir dogs just after that guy had his ear cut off.

Liked jerry springer, Matilda and usual suspects though.

I remember my mum and dad walking out of an on-site comedy show at a camp site when we were younger. Even at 10 or 11 I knew the jokes were not suitable for children. I still recall my dads words to the manager as we left "Call that a family show, it's disgusting!" Something to do with lighting a tampon string on bonfire night Grin

Medusacascade · 05/06/2016 21:50

Oh God that reminds me. I walked out of one on Friday night at a major family holiday destination. I did complain to the management which is something I hardly ever do. It was awful. One joke about a type of disability was too much for me. Apparently it's been a well received show based on old fashioned seaside humour that's not a fit for my family. Well no that's because it's 2016 and we don't take the piss out of disabled people.

I'm still here don't want to out myself! It's UK based though Wink and the entertainment has always been quite decent, occasionally really good and always inoffensive so I was really surprised.

This thread also reminds me of the time I was working front of house and I walked out the auditorium part way through Jethro and told them I wouldn't be going back in while he was taking the piss out of black people and gay people.

I probably sound really joyless, I'm not, but I have a zero tolerance policy for taking the piss out of people who have protected characteristics.

EverySongbirdSays · 05/06/2016 22:05

I'm all for risque comedy but I have limits and taking the piss out of people who have no right to reply is one of them

I slept through Wild Wild West, and Transformers.

We saw quite a few people walk out of Black Swan, we saw it in the middle of the day on a weekday and a lot of the audience were pensioners. I assume they wanted to see a nice film about Ballet...

gabsdot · 05/06/2016 22:09

(She said "I swallowed your cum" )

Anyway. DH and I left the Southpark movie after about 10 minutes and a million F words. We knew there was a lot of swearing in it but we thought it would be like the TV show and it wasn't.
We also left a weird play, which was in German. We had got free tickets for that though.

Medusacascade · 05/06/2016 22:11

I try not to be the professionally offended type, but I don't want my children to think that that kind of thing is acceptable. I know if they repeated it in the playground it would be considered prejudicial.

Jethro I was completely shocked at. I thought he was a harmless Cornish comedian who sang songs. I just couldn't believe 2000 people sat there and laughed at a joke that was basically black people have big lips. I was absolutely disgusted.

Owlytellsmesecrets · 05/06/2016 22:13

I live the cinema and films but gave only walked out of 'wolf ' with Kevin Costner.... Absolute shite

redexpat · 05/06/2016 22:14

Walked out of matchpoint at the cinema because I was bored. I did think the first half of cats was dull, but I wanted to hear scimbleshanks (.spelling?)

MagzFarquarson · 05/06/2016 22:15

We walked out of Trainspotting at the bit where the baby was crawling round in the crap.

Walked out of Mama Mia too, clearly for different reasons.

I posted earlier on about seeing it and I understand what you mean but because of very close family ties to Kenya, as well as running a wee charity there, I could put it all into context and I enjoyed it. It really was very good and absolutely spot on in many respects.

spankhurst · 05/06/2016 22:47

I walked out of a film once not becuase it was bad but because I had horrendous cystitis and was in agony. Worst pain I ever felt, including childbirth.

LurkingHusband · 05/06/2016 22:47

I had to leave part way through "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover" back in the early 90s.... Only time I have ever done so.

Still think Peter Greenaway is brilliant though.

foursillybeans · 05/06/2016 22:52

Bit Confused by your post. You are offended that someone else left the theatre? They obviously didn't enjoy it and didn't want to spend their time on the rest of the play. Life is too short to do things / watch things you don't like at the risk of offending the people sitting next to you who you don't know anyway.

Sunnsoo · 05/06/2016 22:55

Love, actually - we were a group of unimpressed teenagers!

Tattieboggle · 05/06/2016 22:58

Sorry, Im lost Smile

Who was offended someone else left the theatre?

Stopmithering · 05/06/2016 23:14

Twice.
First was a Peter Greenaway film, The Baby of Macon. It is a proper film lover's film but the 10 minute scene where the lead female, Julia Ormond, was raped by 100 men was too unpleasant for me.
This might give the impression that I'm more of a rom-com fan, but no, I do love clever films. I still think the whole issue of rape was used by Peter Greenaway simply to shock, and was, for me, quite pretentious.
I also, embarrassingly had to leave The Silence of the lambs. I went to the first showing of the film on the day it was released, at 12.00 midnight, after the pub with some mates. I had no idea what the film was about and found it horribly unsettling. I was properly scared for weeks afterwards.
Silly now I look back. I've seen it since and didn't find it that scary.
I should have walked out of Vanilla Sky. I agree, it was utter shite.

EverySongbirdSays · 05/06/2016 23:29

I think the "you were offended someone left the theatre" comment is aimed at me the OP.

I don't say I was offended I was taken aback. I've never left the theatre and was asking for peoples stories/experiences.

It's a topic of discussion.

There's always one who turns up, sometimes several, like

Why do you CARE OP?
Why are you judging them OP?

etc etc

My question was 'Have you ever left the theatre?"

which was prompted by my experience last night

NOT

AIBU to judge these people for walking out of a sweary show?

Nobody would ever talk about anything the way some people carry on.

Thank you Smile

Now I just have to find out what all the references to 'cashing the cheque' in other threads means.

houseeveryweekend · 05/06/2016 23:41

I love films but have walked out twice because of hand held camera shots. I get incredibly bad motion sickness from them. I had to walk out of one film half way through to throw up, but i did come back in again to try and watch the rest because it was quite good. I threw up in popcorn container near the end though :-(

dillite · 05/06/2016 23:42

I walked out of The Black Dahlia because the guy behind me was wanking. Also the film was shit.

houseeveryweekend · 05/06/2016 23:45

The last film i had to turn off was 'under the skin' ... the bit with the baby on the beach. I was actually hysterical sobbing. But i did manage to turn it back on two days later and watch the rest of it. Im glad i did it was great!
