Have you ever walked out of the theatre or cinema? Why?

I was at the theatre last night. The play was 16+ and clearly stated it contained swearing and sexual references in its advertising and BOY did it. The people next to us walked out after the umpteenth wank joke and I was like Shock I've never seen that happen before. And surely if something states upfront what it's about you don't hoik your bosoms and get professionally offended and make for the exit?

Pretty much stick with it if I have paid for it. Gives a talking point after. Some things have scarred me for life. Though I surmise that they would already have done by the time I left anyway.

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 19/06/2016 22:51

I walked out of War Of The Worlds a few weeks ago because it was so dire. We go to the theatre probably about once a month and have for years and I've never walked out of anything else!

Oliviaerinpope · 19/06/2016 22:56

I leave if the show/ film isn't great, I'd rather spend the remaining time doing something I'd enjoy.

Choceeclair123 · 19/06/2016 23:52

I walked out of Reservoir Dogs, it was too brutal and Les Miserables because all the singing of the lines irritated me.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 20/06/2016 00:22

Ghosts I can handle
. After all, I live with one. Grin.
But I cant deal with violent films. They scare the crap out of me

SinisterBumFacedCat · 20/06/2016 00:38

Some bloke at a Dave Gorman gig got up and left halfway through the show. After the door shut DG paused and said "do you know, I thought he'd never leave" Grin

I went to see 'Elizabeth The Golden Age' and there was something obviously wrong with the sound system. The room was reasonably busy, but as I looked around, no body seemed bothered at all by the fact that you could hear the movie in the next auditorium much louder than the one we were watching. How very British of them, I thought..
I left, and got my money back. The 'usherette' told me they'd had complaints all week about it. Saw it on DVD not long after and was rather glad I had walked out.

wherethefuckisthefuckingtuna · 20/06/2016 20:11

I walked out of 'The Ladykillers' (the remake with Tom Hanks).

It was fucking terrible.

PinkyofPie · 25/06/2016 21:22

Me and my friend walked out of the vagina monologues. It had soap stars in and was just completely awful. Turns out I don't find fannys that funny.

We went to the pub and got pissed instead

PinkyofPie · 26/06/2016 11:24

My old boss walked out of a play called "Fucking and Shopping" when there was a live rimming on stage Confused

AnneEtAramis · 26/06/2016 12:30

I liked the set of that Jane Eyre production but wasn't keen on the show but not enough to walk out.

I saw Dr Faustus recently and apparently every show lots of people leave, but I thought it was brilliant - not Faustus- but superb.

I would prob leave at the interval of a live performance but I would have to really hate it.

I usually fall asleep in the cinema, most often to Quentin Taratino films.

I also now go to the theatre alone so I don't feel responsible for others enjoyment, it's been liberating.

justwondering72 · 04/07/2016 18:01

Star Wars the Force Awakens. It was rated U here in France, I took 8yf old DS and his friend as a birthday 'treat' we lasted about 15 minutes - the noise, the torture scenes, the slaughter of innocent villagers... Too much, the 12 rating in the UK was far more appropriate.

hollyisalovelyname · 10/09/2016 19:19

Dublin Theatre Festival.
Crap incomprehensible play.
We were guests.
I didn't stand up like most of the rest of the sheep audience.
DH was mortified.
I hate pretentiousness.

hollyisalovelyname · 11/09/2016 09:24

I meant to write I didn't stand up for the standing ovation.
It really was a bad play.

Wishfulmakeupping · 11/09/2016 18:49

Left during a dire performance of Richard III and at the interval of a Jimmy Carr show really not funny

PhyllisWig · 23/09/2016 18:44

Happily fell asleep in Gladiator - really never got the fuss there.

Went to see Hurly Burly in the theatre in the 90s and loads of people walked out.

We went to see the producers when it first came to the West End and Nathan Lane agreed to reprise his Broadway role for a few weeks as the actor cast in the UK was ill. Tickets like gold dust and was genuinely one of the funniest things I've seen. The entire theatre in fits of laughter. Couple next to me didn't come back after the interval. Everyone sat around the seats all said to each other how weird it was. It hadn't even got to Springtime for Hitler.

midsomermurderess · 23/09/2016 19:22

I have a few times when I have been bored senseless. Last of the Mohicans and one of the Lord of the Rings films drove me out. And a French film called Little White Lies, about a loathsome bunch of vapid, solipsistic, narcissistic twats on holiday together. I lasted about half an hour and as I was leaving said to an attendant, I just couldn't stand any more. Not sure why I felt I had to explain myself. I did well there, the film was 2.5 hours long. On all occasions, I was on my own though. I have sat through god awful trip like Iron Man when in company.

herewego1987 · 24/09/2016 18:17

The film "mama" utter cack.

Kahlua4me · 24/09/2016 18:19

I walked out of Natural Born Killers. as couldn't stand all the gratuitous killing.
Not sure what I was expecting as went at the last minute with friends but walked out when the murdered their parents.

DownWithThisSortaThing · 24/09/2016 18:21

I walked out of the last Lord of the Rings film after about 3 hours. I was starting to fall asleep and had totally lost interest - to be honest I'm not sure how I made it through the first two

alfagirl73 · 01/10/2016 20:39

I'll walk out of a film and have done a few times.

There would have to be something really extreme/bad going on for me to walk out of a theatre. Too many friends of mine are actors either in the West End or on national tours - I know what it's like from their perspective and I'd consider it rude to walk out.

n0ne · 01/10/2016 20:57

Walked out of Alien: Resurrection as it was incomprehensible garbage. And I love sci fi.

A good friend of mine used to work for Ticketmaster so I've been to loads of plays in the West End for free. I very stupidly had to walk out of Frost/Nixon as I'd had 2 pints before the play and was seriously about to wet myself, and it didn't have an interval. Still angry with myself for that as I ADORE Michael Sheen (didn't know him back then) and the film is superb.

DoneRacing · 01/10/2016 21:03

Lots. Don't like it, don't stay. I hate this saying, but life is too short (especially on the West End where tickets are expensive and you could be at the Delauany having a glass of champagne..).

theDudesmummy · 02/10/2016 14:06

I wish I had walked out of A Clockwork Orange, the scene where they attack the guy still haunts me. I know it's a seminal movie, a masterpiece etc etc but it upset me terribly and I have never forgotten that upset. Also wish I had walked out of The Cook The Thief etc (Greenaway, I refuse to watch anything of his after that. It was stomach turning). And Eating Raoul, anyone ever see that? (Clearly cannibalism movies do not agree with me...). I don't go to the cinema now, so I can always switch off or go to sleep if I don't like something.

bigoldbird · 02/10/2016 14:10

Captain Smith, good film but we were too near the screen and got motion sickness. Weirdos we are.

Also a Shakespeare play at Minack. Too cold and rainy. 😀
