Family film recommendations needed

I do the Amazon LoveFilm thing and I need to add some films to my rental list but I don't know what to choose. I would like films that are no more than a 12 rating so that we can watch them with the DS (9) and DD (11). We've enjoyed all the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. We've also seen all the Harry Potter films. We are not big into Star Wars or anything of that ilk.

Also if anyone has any suggestions regarding a better way to rent films I would like to know. Our tv is quite old and we've tried getting Netflix on it but can't seem to figure it out (technophobes!).

Galaxy Quest. It's hilarious, a spoof on all those sci fi films - well, actually a spoof on Star Trek. Sigourney Weaver and Alan Rickman are in it, so definitely worth it.

DD1 is 8 and loves love loves Descendants - story about the children of all the fairytale characters, goodies & baddies. So the kids of Maleficent, Cruella, Alladins bad genie, Bad witch in Snow White, the son of Prince Charming & Cinderella, Fairy Godmother, Mulan etc.

It's quite good.

Lol tinkly everyone can act Channing Tatum off the screen. The only worst actor I can think off is the girl who was in Magic Mike (played the sister) she was dismal.

Lynnm63 · 20/03/2016 17:59

Inside out is very good and it's on sky over Easter. I also liked into the woods, it's a musical but if you dont mind that it's worth a view. I loved Paddington but I've loved Paddington since I was 6.

Lynnm63 · 20/03/2016 18:05

I'd like to point out I'm not suggesting magic mike for kids Blush I'm not that bad a parent I hope

Crispbutty · 20/03/2016 18:09

Zaphodsotherhead · 21/03/2016 19:19

Can I give a shout out to Ella Enchanted?

Girls and boys both loved that film and still rewatch even though they are now in their late teens/early twenties! It's very funny and sweet, a remake of Cinderella.

Strictlyobsessed · 21/03/2016 20:30

My suggestion is Sea biscuit , my girls rolled their eyes when I suggested we watch it as our Christmas day film ( this was a fair few years ago) but by the end they were cheering him on (both mad animal lovers)and crying.

AGreatBigWorld · 21/03/2016 21:07

Has anyone suggested Stardust? DP and I watched it last night and loved it!

AGreatBigWorld · 21/03/2016 21:14

I WOULDN'T recommend Bridge To Terabitha..... Very upsetting scene in it which was totally unexpected and made me cry! Sad. Because of Winn Dixie is a good film!!!!

Palmtree · 22/03/2016 13:11

How about Robin Hood : Men in Tights

www.imdb.com/title/tt0107977/?ref_=nv_sr_1

It's PG, a little lewd in parts (e.g. chastity belt business) but DS has been watching it since he was 8, absolutely roars with laughter, and a lot of the innuendoes go completely over his head, whereas DH & I are smirking away. Highly recommend.

KinkyDorito · 26/03/2016 21:21

sportinguista watched Song of the Sea just now on Amazon Prime based on your recommendation. It was brilliant, thank you Thanks.

sportinguista · 29/03/2016 11:52

Glad you loved it KinkyDorito! DS watches it over and over. I love it for the animation style (I am a designer and illustrator) it's visually lush! It got a great review from Mark Kermode at BBC.

DS has just watched "Open Season, Scared Silly" which has some very funny jokes and an amusing Dachsund!

KinkyDorito · 29/03/2016 19:32

We'll keep an eye out for that one too Thanks.

17 year old DD was furious we watched Song of the Sea without her as apparently she'd read about it a while ago and has been waiting to watch it. She watched it afterwards and loved it too. (In my defence, she'd turned down the earlier showing of The Good Dinosaur, so I wrongly assumed she was not in a cartoon mood Grin.)

sportinguista · 30/03/2016 05:33

To be honest there are some great animations out there. We watch and enjoy them all. Even DSS who is nearly 19 watches stuff with us and his little brother.

Another 2 DS enjoys are Frankenweenie and Papa Soy Una Zombie if you can find them, great stories and great animation styles with a bit of edge to them and good humour.

Pirates of the Caribbean

LydiaFrances · 18/10/2017 15:22

Cloudy with a chance of meatballs is brilliant for all ages, it really cracked me up.
