I do the Amazon LoveFilm thing and I need to add some films to my rental list but I don't know what to choose. I would like films that are no more than a 12 rating so that we can watch them with the DS (9) and DD (11). We've enjoyed all the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. We've also seen all the Harry Potter films. We are not big into Star Wars or anything of that ilk.

Also if anyone has any suggestions regarding a better way to rent films I would like to know. Our tv is quite old and we've tried getting Netflix on it but can't seem to figure it out (technophobes!).

Hi everyone,
We're sweeping this great thread into films. OP please do shout if this is a problem. Flowers

ShreddieMonster · 17/03/2016 10:20

Dd enjoyed My Big Fat Greek Wedding the other night.

ShreddieMonster · 17/03/2016 10:25

Mrs doubt fire, hairspray & Ferris buellers day off too.

Ferris Bueller is a 15, which I was surprised about. There is no sex/violence I think it is prob because of swearing. My two have seen it bad mother alert !

Mrs Doubtfire

Strange Magic. We went to see it at the cinema and hadn't heard of it, we didn't expect much, but was fab! My son and daughter both loved it. The music is brilliant and you will be singing along, as you will know the songs.
We have now bought it on Amazon Instant. My Dad and husband even enjoyed it.
It is a George Lucas animated film, very loosely based on a Midsummer Night's Dream.

What about musicals?

  • Flash Gordon
  • Mamma Mia of course
  • Sound of Music (very long though)
  • Grease is 8yo DD's favourite! Some slightly adult content (is Rizzo pregnant?) but nothing too shocking - more of a conversation starter.
Vigbymumparis · 18/03/2016 10:33

The Aardman Animation films (Wallace and Gromit): A Grand Day Out, The Wrong Trousers, A Close Shave (which introduced Sean the sheep), The Curse of the Were-Rabbit...

MCMLXVII · 18/03/2016 10:34

@Canshopwillshop re Netflix etc. - rather than use built-in 'apps' on a smart TV, you could also just use the telly as a screen for a computer, and watch stuff that way.. Amazon Prime, NetFlix, Youtube or whatever. If it's a flat screen telly they almost all have a 'VGA' connector and a 'PC audio in'.

EleanorofProvence · 18/03/2016 10:41

How to Train Your Dragon (both are good). Minions/Despicable Me films if not already mentioned.

redhat · 18/03/2016 10:45

Drop Dead Fred is a 15 so you might want to wait a few years if yours are 9 and 11

Lurleene · 18/03/2016 10:49

DS is 10 and his favourite films at the moment are Pixels as mentioned up thread and also Mr Peabody and Sherman. Also I'd suggest Earth to Echo.

retro is good as I think more family movies were made then rather than childrens specific or animated ones.

Also things like Jackie Chan movies tend to be good fun.
Indiana Jones
Pirates of the Caribbean
Batman Movies (The Dark knight ones)
Robin Hood

We recently watched the Great Escape but ours are teens now so I'm not sure what rating that is.

chemenger · 18/03/2016 11:11

We all loved Stardust.

redhat · 18/03/2016 11:14

Stardust is fab

Mine love Back to the Future (all of them)

Myfanwyprice · 18/03/2016 11:15

2 films that ds has really enjoyed recently are free willy and the ant bully.

daisydalrymple · 18/03/2016 11:16

The free willy movies?

Some of the disney classics have been enjoyed here lately eg the rescuers - animated but still loved by ds1 just turned 9. Bed knobs and broomsticks, Peter pan etc.

Matilda, Charlie and the chocolate factory

101 / 102 Dalmatians

redhat · 18/03/2016 11:16

Mine also enjoyed Star Trek (the remake) last week. Its a 12 and there's both a punch up with bloody noses and a smooch under the bedclothes scene but they loved the movie overall.

daisydalrymple · 18/03/2016 11:17
