Family film recommendations needed

I do the Amazon LoveFilm thing and I need to add some films to my rental list but I don't know what to choose. I would like films that are no more than a 12 rating so that we can watch them with the DS (9) and DD (11). We've enjoyed all the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. We've also seen all the Harry Potter films. We are not big into Star Wars or anything of that ilk.

Also if anyone has any suggestions regarding a better way to rent films I would like to know. Our tv is quite old and we've tried getting Netflix on it but can't seem to figure it out (technophobes!).

We have iPads and buy movies through the iTunes Store. Then for fifty quid, we bought Apple TV and plug that into the Tv, enabling the iPad movies to play on the big tele.

Family movie-wise, we love Cheaper by the Dozen, High School musical movies when the kids were younger, Star Trek movies, back to the future, Diary of a Wimpy Kid films and stuff like Tooth Fairy and Nanny McPhee.

I really want to see Dad's Army and the Pan film.

crappyday · 18/03/2016 19:44

unashamedly place marking to read next time we cant decide!

MakewayforNoddy · 18/03/2016 19:46

It's really old but Groundhog day is such a great film and my 11 year old absolutely loved it.

Also the Walter Mitty film with Ben Stiller out a year or so ago was surprisingly fabulous (and I don't normally like him).

Clixsy · 18/03/2016 20:17

Labyrinth
Neverending Story
Hotel Transylvania (1 & 2)
Life of Pi (really surprised how much my 7 yo d's enjoyed this, I think the cinematography grabbed him)
Oliver! (The musical one)
Mary Poppins

I'm sure there's more in my brain somewhere!

PoohBearsHole · 18/03/2016 20:52

night at the museum films, my two love them, narnia and the cheesy roger Moore James bonds always go down well!

Sunnyshores · 18/03/2016 21:10

Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.

SueTrinder · 18/03/2016 21:45

I made my DDs watch ' The Railway Children' and apart from my trauma at realising I'm now older than Bernard Cribbins was when he filmed it they really loved it.

We love Big Hero Six, Studio Ghilbi, Bridge to Terabithia (which the kids watched with DH and were surprised that I thought was sad).

Canshopwillshop · 18/03/2016 22:17

Verbena - that sounds simple enough. Might look into a Apple TV.

I have enough suggestions to last a while, thanks everyone. I'm glad others are finding this thread helpful.

A roku or firestick should do the same thing OP as long as you have the right connections on your tv. We also have a smart blu ray player which you can access all the smart stuff on the same as a smart tv that would give you something that has another purpose if you were looking at a bluray too.

Canshopwillshop · 19/03/2016 10:19

onemagnum we have a Bluray DVD player but I didn't realise you could use that as a connection for smart stuff! Me and DH need to sort this out!

Boxtrolls is a good animation and quite gross in places
Soul surfer is a heart warming true story
Sunshine on Leith - a jukebox musical of proclaimers songs
Ghostbusters/Big/Groundhog Day/Labyrinth for 80s retro
Or go old school with Singing in the Rain/North by Northwest/My fair Lady/Operation Petticoat/Father Goose - Cary Grant is always a joy to watch.
We just introduced DS 15 to Inception he's very confused now.

And thanks to SueTrinder, I too am feeling very old. Surely he was older than 42 when he made that film.

Sorry! That was my reaction as well, he's always been ancient hasn't he?

trixymalixy · 19/03/2016 10:39

The goonies
Labyrinth
Indiana Jones
The maze runner
Hunger games
Chronicles of narnia films

DiscoGlitter · 19/03/2016 17:15

Somebody suggested Drop Dead Fred. Love that film, but be aware it's got tons of swearing in it!
I didn't remember it having that much when I was younger!
We love

  • Diary of A Wimpy Kid
  • Back To The Future
  • E,T Inside Out Minion Movie Despicable Me
JOEYDOESNTSHAREFOOD · 19/03/2016 17:39

Zookeeper. It's got talking animals in it all voiced by major celebs.

It's the best 'bad film' ever. Me and my daughter (11) stumbled across it and laughed so much. I then showed it to my class of year tens and had SLT come in because they could hear the raucous laughter down the hall.

It's stupid, and you'll roll your eyes so much, but watch it. You'll feel good. Grin

I'll be taking notes from this thread. Tintin is great too.

Be careful with Back to the Future. Dh was really excited about watching this with the dcs - it's a PG so we thought would be fine. 2 problems with it really: a. The level of swearing and b. The boys not taking No for an answer storyline. Both perhaps OK for older dcs but definitely not for our 8 yo ds.

LikeASoulWithoutAMind · 19/03/2016 18:17

I get the impression that old PGs were more like 12s today?

Crispbutty · 19/03/2016 18:39

The Secret Garden. Its a really lovely film. I liked the original but the newer one is even better.

Canshopwillshop · 19/03/2016 21:49

Joey Zookeeper is going on the list thanks.

Thanks everyone else - so glad I posted this.

Absolutely love BTTF, and can quote it word for word. Grin I've let my 8 year old watch it, he loves it.
There is a little bit of swearing on the dvd version (I must have grown up watching the televised version as for eg the tv one says at one point "son of a" whereas the dvd says "son of a bitch."
Same with "holy shit!" being "holy jeez!"
As for the boys not taking no for an answer storyline, I'm presuming you mean Lorraine and Biff in the car?
That totally, utterly goes over the heads of 8 years old, and did me too at that age! (Just like Grease and the whole Rizzo stuff.)
It's only as an adult we see the bigger picture.

sportinguista · 20/03/2016 09:49

Going to go with an unsual one here. Saw this last year and it is such a beautiful film, full of magic and a feast for the eyes. DS loves it and it makes me cry at the end (I blub at anything though since having him).

It's Song of the Sea.

It's based on Irish myths and the animation is some of the loveliest I've seen for years. It should be out on DVD by now or on Netflix etc.

www.imdb.com/title/tt1865505/

Recommend it so much!

TinklyLittleLaugh · 20/03/2016 12:36

We watched Eagle, which is a 12, with our nearly 10 year old last night. Went down really well; DS loved it and I got to perve over Jamie Bell (who absolutely acts Channing Tatum off the screen).
