The Revenant _ load of rubbish or a masterpiece? Discuss

I am not a Leonardo de Caprio fan but the hype around this (particularly around it possibly winning him an Oscar) has been so massive that I went to see it this afternoon.

Well- what a pile of poo. That's 156 minutes of my life wasted. It was shocking and far and away the worst thing in it was LdC's performance. At one point I laughed out loud because it was all so ludicrous. Luckily it is a noisy movie so no one could hear me. The only good thing I can say about it is that it was beautifully shot.

Did anyone like it ? If so, tell me what I'm missing.

I've seen it and actually think he is very good and deserves the Oscar.

Also seen Joy. Not sure why that is in best film category tbh.

I don't think one is supposed to enjoy it; I think one is supposed to admire it. I think you'd be a rather strange person actively to enjoy watching it. I think the act of watching is supposed to be painful / a feat of endurance.

And sorry Tom Hardy fans. I could only understand one in every three words his character was saying...

I hated it. I laughed at several bits as they were just so unbelievable. It felt that a huge exercise in 'look how clever we all are' but all the amazing scenery etc is a bit pointless IMO if the actual story is rubbish.

And a small (but very irritating point), why on earth did every single character have a full set of perfectly even teeth??? Note to Hollywood directors - no one in the 1880's had a full set of teeth and especially not after been half eaten alive and beaten up by a massive bear

Fabulous cinematography but we got shocking giggles starting with the bear, full on laughing at the horse and by the time he stripped to show his well-fed torso I just didn't care.

Shame as I thought it captured the unrelenting harshness of fur trapping. What was the recent book about that era?

Hate ldc - but blood diamond was superb. He should've got his oscar for that.

Didn't expect to like it but loved it. BeUtiful photography. Di caprio v good, deserves Oscar, hardy barely understandable a lot.

I thought that people actually had quite good teeth in the past as they didn't scoff sugary stuff.

I thought it was amazing and have seen it several times -
amazing things are
the scenery
the sheer hardness of life - something not always portrayed in films as it's a bit depressing
The close ups - Tom Hardy, his expressionlessness when he said did evil things. LDC his lack of emotion when you knew he had lost everything that mattered to him. Jim Bridges when he had to deal with the cruel behavior of others and realization of what had really gone on. The native americans, all seemed very convincing to me.
Great acting by the main characters. Captain Henry too was great. All these except LDC were british actors
The amaaaaazing music/sound effects - probably an Oscar there.

I am old enough to remember the old style cowboy films - love this more authentic take on life then.

Not sure why there was the close ups of the bison's eye and the pony's eye. Some deep meaning there though not sure what.

We enjoyed it but also thought some of it was hilariously OTT.

Couldn't understand a word Tom Hardy said.

Most utterly boring film I have seen in a long long time. Completely switched off after a while.
Me and my partner would have walked out but we were right in the end of the row and didn't want to disturb the full cinema

Loved this film. Pretty gruelling to watch, but was brilliantly shot and very atmospheric. The hardship and suffering felt very real, and LdC and Tom Hardy were excellent. Fantastic scenery too.

I live in the middle of this scenery except for the bits after they ran off to Argentina blaming climate change for the perfectly ordinary chinook.
It does make me carry my bear spray though.

I agree with the poster. I don't like the story but the film was shot at a beautiful place. I got bored watching the film, the only interesting was the surrounding.

I thought that too Put but apparently they ate it raw as it retains more nutritional value.
Beautifully shot, but really rather clichéd story of wronged man gets his pay back. I was really rather bored and laughed when the credits finally rolled out of relief!

Definitely LET making a play for his Oscar.

Tom Hardy should get it for Legend (no idea if he's been nominated).

I think it was just all a bit too Boy's Own and predictable for me. And much too long.

I liked it too, but agree it's Tom Hardy who carries the whole film, he has way more lines and much more to do.

Didn't Leo's wounds heal so nicely because his native American friend put something on the cuts when he left him tucked up under the canopy during the snowstorm?

Before I went to see this I looked up the dictionary definition of a revenant and found it was this:

a person who has returned, especially supposedly from the dead.

So for me, Leo actually 'died' of his wounds fairly near the start (when he crawled over to his son's body under the tree and collapsed). The rest of the film was almost mythical in quality, which is why he 'survived' so many times and why his wounds healed. His whole purpose was to avenge his son's death and once this was achieved he let go and died for real.

I absolutely loved it. That opening shot of the tree roots in the water - I think I'd go and see it again just for that - it took my breath away.
Tom H was a revelation and I'm a massive Leo fan, though thought this wasn't his best effort.

Loved it. It was so atmospheric - I felt freezing cold all the way through! The opening battle scene was terrifying - I could almost feel arrows whizzing by my head. Terrific acting all round. It must have been sheer brutal hell to film though
