Lovely, lovely films full of loveliness

I'm watching 'Sense and Sensibility'. It's so lovely. Emma Thompson and Hugh Grant being 'proper' and very intelligent.

The Enchanted April.

I do prefer the book because Elizabeth Von Arnim has such a fantastic way with words, but the film is beautiful and very evocative of the period.

The Princess Bride. Some amazing comic turns in it from Billy Crystal and Peter Cook, and the best sword fight ever in a film. Also eminently quote-able which is always good when a night out degenerates.

I MUST watch TMD again, niminy!

hangingoutattheendofmywick · 17/11/2015 17:14

YES to whoever said Muriel's wedding.

I love CHEESE / romance / early 90s so
Sleepless in Seattle (probably spelt that incorrectly)
While you were sleeping (gorgeous)
Kindergarten cop
3 men and a little lady

Then also a little princess! Sob
And anything Christmas feel good - a muppet's Christmas Carol always makes me weep with joy.

hangingoutattheendofmywick · 17/11/2015 17:15

Oh and YES to Big

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/11/2015 17:23

Yes to The Princess Bride - brilliant film.

MantaRayBay · 17/11/2015 17:25

"As you wish!" Ha.

A Good Year is really uplifting. (People will think I have some weird Russell Crowe obsession but I don't! Really!)

Little Women makes me cry. Every. Single. Time.

Saw Black Beauty the other day (what else is suitable TV when you're breastfeeding?). I'm not even a horse person but I cried all through that.

PollyGone · 17/11/2015 17:26

Yes to 'Untouchable', great film.
Guess Who's Coming To Dinner.

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 17/11/2015 17:38

The Princess Bride is my all time favourite film ever!

"Inconceivable!"

arizonamaybe · 17/11/2015 18:58

"Death cannot stop true love; all it can do is delay it a while" Grin

Has anyone mentioned Frankie and Johnnie yet? That's one of my favourites when I'm feeling a bit down -- lovely, lovely Al Pacino.

There's a great little French film called Populaire about a guy who trains his secretary up to win a speed-typing competition. It's sweeter and funnier and more romantic than it sounds! There's something of a 40's screwball comedy about it (although I found myself peculiarly distracted by the male lead's teeth).

Dammit. I have just spent far too much money ordering various items from this thread on Amazon.

upaladderagain · 17/11/2015 20:21

Billy Elliott. I can barely see the keyboard now through the tears just thinking about Adam Cooper stretching his neck before leaping onto the stage with his feathery legs.

bearleftmonkeyright · 17/11/2015 20:27

I love You've Got Mail. Tom Hanks is brilliant and when he says "Don't cry Shopgirl" I always do. Watched it at least 12 million times.

MitzyLeFrouf · 17/11/2015 20:28

Goodbye Mr Chips

TyrannosaurusBex · 17/11/2015 20:31

I Capture The Castle, Seven Brides For Seven Brothers and Thoroughly Modern Millie.

TyrannosaurusBex · 17/11/2015 20:32

Oh, and Meet Me In St Louis!

Greydog · 17/11/2015 20:38

The Muppet Christmas Carol, with Michael Caine.
Roman Holiday
Moonstruck
Railway Children

Hassled · 17/11/2015 20:40

Local Hero. I rewatched it the other day - so sweet and quirky and nice. Plus a very young Peter Capaldi. Also Gregory's Girl - just a nice, happy film about nice people.

Redcrayons · 17/11/2015 20:49

I've been looking for a list of feel good films to watch when dcs are with their dad, so thanks for the thread.
I'll add Pollyana, perfect Sunday hangover film.
Although, makes me a bit wistful that my own DCs would rather play Xbox all day than make wind chimes for elderly neighbours.

Cinema Paradiso is going to the top of the list, even though I've watched it a million times. the kissing at the end never fails to make me cry happy tears.

banff82 · 17/11/2015 20:55

Up
Love Actually

Also yy to You've Got Mail and The Princess Bride.

banff82 · 17/11/2015 20:56

Forgot Mamma Mia too!

BestIsWest · 17/11/2015 20:58

Pride.
An Affair to Remember

mumchkin · 18/11/2015 04:42

The original Anne of Green Gables telemovies. Gilbert Blythe! Matthew! The SONG! I sob from beginning to end.

alldaysleeper · 18/11/2015 06:47

Too too many! We have the special post Sunday lunch slot set aside for a good old weepy/feel good film. DH and I will always be found gently dabbing our eyes or singing along to one of these.
While you were Sleeping.
You've got mail (we first kissed watching this together!)
Brief Encounter
An affair to remember
Goodbye Mr Chips (b/w original)
The Wedding Planner
High Society/Calamity Jane/Sound of Music
Love comes Softly (there is a whole series of Love...all good but the first is so lovely)
Les Mis
And of course now its Christmas coming up:-
Its a wonderful life
The Christmas Visitor
The Christmas Gift
Hats off to Christmas
The two Mrs Miracle films (brilliant)
Plus all time favourite - The Preachers Wife
Also working our way through all Jane Austen adaptations, forgot how good Emma (Johnny Lee Miller version) is!
Plus some cracking Dickens box sets - David Copperfield, Martin Chuzzlewitt.
Our Mutual Friend

Just realised I've only just scratched the surface!!

Nataleejah · 18/11/2015 10:48

Donovan's Reef -- old fashioned and a bit sexist, but made me want to live in French Polynesia.
City of the Lost Children -- slightly weird, but gotta love steampunk fantasy and young Ron Perlman.
Marley & Me -- one of films where its impossible to not feel emotional.
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind -- beautiful Japanese anime.
Big Fish -- also slightly weird but wonderful.

vladthedisorganised · 18/11/2015 11:14

How did I forget When Harry Met Sally? "I love that it takes you over an hour to order a cheese sandwich!"

bobbilyknob · 18/11/2015 13:05

Yes, 'About time' made me feel all warm and fuzzy.
