Uplifting, inspiring films

am on annual leave at the moment and going through a bit of a low patch, feeling in a rut etc and have let myself go. I was thinking of getting a few treats in tomorrow and watching a movie (will be on my own). Looking for your inspirational, feel good movie suggestions (not into romcom type things). Any ideas?

Life is Beautiful.

Incredibly life-affirming but maybe not quite what you meant.

What are your favourite films?

gotredonyou · 28/05/2015 10:09

I love 'About Time' I suppose it could be considered a rom-com but after I watch it I feel uplifted!

MillyMollyMandy78 · 28/05/2015 12:27

FAvourite Films include Chicago, Footloose, Les Mis, Jurassic Park (all), Labyrinth (David Bowie one), The Notebook, Dead Poets Society, A Single Man, LOTR / The Hobbit, The Other Boleyn Girl, Mandella, Twelve Years a Slave

Happy to watch romance/ love stories but just hate typical romcoms like Love Actually, Four Weddings, when Harry Met Sally, Notting Hill. Seen both of the movies you've mentioned and enjoyed them both!

Pricilla, Queen Of The Desert.

Although when I'm feeling low I watch Mary and Max and have a bloody good cry.

13 Going on 30 and Clueless always cheer me up. Grin

I quite enjoy 'chef' which is on netflix: basically chef gets bad restaurant review, goes in different direction. A lot of shots of food but very gentle and ultimate message is a bit inspiring about doing what you love.

I also love some of the 80s shoulder pad movies, like working girl.

Mindgone · 28/05/2015 13:06

Pretty woman

Also suggest looking up the films you like on Amazon, and looking at the suggestions, 'people who bought this also bought'
I hope you have a lovely day, and get the uplift you need :)

Forrest Gump?

KingJoffreyFanciesDarylDixon · 28/05/2015 13:15

Ooo, Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion.

Bit pants but very funny.

Arsenic · 28/05/2015 13:25

How about Amelie and/or Miss Pettigrew lives for a day? Both 5* films Smile

Mull · 28/05/2015 13:43

Now see I always find Forrest Gump quite lowering. I love it but have to be in the right frame of mind to watch it.

I LOVE Life is Beautiful.

LeBearPolar · 28/05/2015 13:47

August Rush.

gonegrey56 · 28/05/2015 13:49

Les Untouchables, French language but so wonderful, funny uplifting and moving. Based on a true story . Untouchable is English title.

Land Girls and Me Without You, if you like early Anna Friel.

Like Water for Chocolate would fit well with your other faves, I think.

Ang Lee's Eat Drink Man Woman or the US remake Tortilla Soup, about an extended Taiwanese family, or Mexican-American family - or, in the scriptwriter's head, Jewish American family.

BarryGoosey · 28/05/2015 13:59

The Blindside is great. Really nice true story. Sandra Bullock is fab in it. It won her the best actress Oscar I believe.

SevTSnape · 28/05/2015 14:14

The Science of Sleep.

Also, for a notromcom, try 500 days of summer.

whitershadeofpale · 28/05/2015 14:16

Made in Dagenham is good and inspiring I think.

MillyMollyMandy78 · 28/05/2015 14:18

Thank you for all the suggestions! Am heading for Amazon to look up some of these suggestions as not heard of all of them!

How about 'Wild'. It had really good reviews and I think it's a good uplifting story (I've read the book).

Doesn't look like a romcom either. Would like to see it myself.

castlesintheair · 28/05/2015 14:19

As good as it gets.

DepthFirstSearch · 28/05/2015 14:29
