am on annual leave at the moment and going through a bit of a low patch, feeling in a rut etc and have let myself go. I was thinking of getting a few treats in tomorrow and watching a movie (will be on my own). Looking for your inspirational, feel good movie suggestions (not into romcom type things). Any ideas?

Good to know Cudding! I really enjoyed the book, but was nervous about Reece Whitherspoon being the lead as she just wasn't how I imagined her to be. But I now want to see it and it seems to tick the boxes the OP requested.

Cinema Paradiso is a fabulous film Smile

I might have to watch that yet again now that I've seen it mentioned.

Little miss sunshine
it's a wonderful life

Wow some fab responses - thank you! I'm afraid i can't stand Pretty Woman or Little Miss Sunshine (sorry - i know i am in a small minority here)! I think i will prob go for Wild, although will watch Chef and Like Water For Chocolate at some point too (and probably some of the others). Mary and Max sounds like the sort of film i would like, though i expect i will be crying like a baby through most of it!

Dear Frankie. A film about a little deaf boy with Gerard Butler in it (before he was famous!!)
Regarding Henry starring Harrison Ford. About a man recovering from a gunshot wound to the head.
Both life affirming films! Smile

Untouchable a French film that doesn't at first sound at all uplifting ( about a a disabled man and his carer) but ultimately is a really sweet and uplifting film, with a few laughs along the way, much enjoyed

cjbk1 · 28/05/2015 17:43

CitronVert · 29/05/2015 13:24

I really enjoyed Walter Mitty ( the recent one with Ben Stiller).

I don't think it was very well received by the critics but visually it looks beautiful and I found it really uplifting and life affirming.

I haven't seen it yet but am looking forward to watching Pride - would that meet the criteria? Also agree with untouchable - very uplifting and funny.

MillyMollyMandy78 · 29/05/2015 19:19

Just checking back in. I couldn't find Wild on Netflix so watched Chef. Really enjoyed it and now have a list of other films to check out when i get chance! Thanks all for the fab suggestions!

Made in Dagenham is still on iplayer.

Cornonthecob · 30/05/2015 08:03

Went to see "Man up" last night at the cinema with DH, funniest film we'd seen in a while, came out feeling really good! Great storyline, funny, filmed in London & great cast too! About a cynical single 34 year old who is mistaken as a blind date and just goes for it!

Discogeek · 30/05/2015 08:07

Pride - an amazing, uplifting film (although I did bawl my eyes out at the end, but in a life-affirming way)

Finbar · 30/05/2015 08:38

Another vote for Les Untouchables. Wonderful. Funny. Uplifting

MetallicBeige · 30/05/2015 08:41

The Sea Inside is on one of the subscription channels at the moment. I watched it years ago and loved it, it has always stayed with me.

pinkpanda101 · 30/05/2015 11:59

Twelve Angry Men
(Henry Fonda, b&w) superb acting, attention to detail, and restores faith in human nature. My 13yr old son loved it, despite thinking it would be old, slow and dull Grin

Also
Life of Pi
Singing in the Rain
Inglorious Basterds
Sideways
State and Main
Groundhog Day
Stand By Me
Oh Brother Where Art Thou

all cheer me up by the end Smile
