Howdy!
I love me a bit of Oscars night action, I always stay up all night and watch the ceremony live.
This year I'm actually hopeful to achieve seeing every film nominated for Best Picture before the ceremony. I had to go to the cinema three times this past weekend to get them all in but so far I've seen Imitation Game (loved it), The Theory of Everything (loved it, sobbed!), Boyhood (enjoyed it more than I thought I would) and Grand Budapest Hotel (thought it was ok but nothing very special)
So I've got to see Whiplash, Selma, American Sniper and Birdman. I'm not looking forward to American Sniper but Bradley Cooper might make it ok and I think Birdman might be weird...

Anyone trying to do the same?

Watched Grand Hotel Budapest the other night. Lots of fun but I think it'll only win technical awards, editing for example. I love how it looks though.

Unfortunately we don't get much opportunity to watch many films as DD is a little git about bedtime.

AlpacaPicnic · 21/01/2015 23:02

I feel that about Boyhood. It's not a bad film, it's slow burning and dramatic however nothing much actually happens apart from "people age 12 years" but I suspect it will get awarded for originality and sheer dedication to film making.

Maybe it's just a bit deeper than me...

Well there's lots of brilliant films where nothing much happens, Lost in Translation springs to mind. However I think the Academy likes a worthy story for the big prizes.

I'm trying to watch all the best picture and acting nominees... Last year I did all but one!

I only started this week but so far I've seen:

Whiplash
The theory of everything
American Sniper
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The imitation game
Wild

(It's been a busy week!!)

Going to watch Boyhood today, and Selma and Into The Woods tomorrow.

I'm like you, I love it and my friends and I have a long standing tradition of staying up all night to watch, I can't wait Grin

LadyTurmoil · 22/01/2015 18:10

curiousgeorgie very jealous you've been to the cinema so much! I love the Oscars, always say I'll go to bed and record it but usually end up lasting til the end.

I've seen Gone Girl, Theory of Everything and The Imitation Game so far.
I've got Grand Budapest Hotel on the V box so will see that soon.

Unfortunately, Foxcatcher and Birdman have already disappeared from my local cinemas so don't know if I'll get to see them. But American Sniper, Into the Woods and Whiplash are still around so hoping to see them. Wild hasn't arrived yet locally but hope it will soon.

My daughter saw Boyhood and raved about it. What was Selma like, alpaca?

curiousgeorgie · 22/01/2015 21:27

LadyTurmoil - Birdman disappeared from mine too but another local cinema is having a one off screening of it so it might be worth asking?

AlpacaPicnic · 22/01/2015 21:54

I don't think Selma is out until next month - that's the one I'm looking forward to watching the most.
I'm going to concentrate on Best Picture nominees but then probably move on to acting categories because I really want to see Foxcatcher. I might have to go and see Birdman this weekend if it's already leaving cinemas...

After posting, looked at cinemas a bit further afield. Looks like Foxcatcher on tomorrow for last time so I'll try to get there. Birdman also there for few more days ... Hard to keep up, there's so much to see at the moment!

Chipsandsalad · 23/01/2015 10:49

Wild has stayed with me the most. It's such a compelling story. True too.

AlpacaPicnic · 28/01/2015 20:55

I watched Foxcatcher today. I thought the acting was pretty good but I was left a tad confused by the actual story. I had to come home and Google it to find out a bit more... I knew it was a true story but I deliberatly didn't read up about it before I went because I wanted to see it as a 'blank canvas' with no preconceptions.
It was sad, but it wasn't robbed of a best picture nomination IMHO.

Hi everyone,

AlpacaPicnic (great name btw) we hope you don't mind us dropping into you thread like this.

The Academy Awards 2015 are taking place this Sunday 22 February. If you're partial to the Oscars and subscribe to Sky Movies you can watch it live but please do come back and tell us all about it.

Meanwhile, the nominations are out and we thought this video was a pretty handy round-up and worth a look.

Over and out...

boogiewoogie · 17/02/2015 21:21

I Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones win in their category. They were absolutely superb in The Theory of Everything. I cried a few times.

boogiewoogie · 17/02/2015 21:44

I hope that Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones...etc

Jackieharris · 22/02/2015 12:53

I used to love watching the oscars but I refuse to get sky give rupert £££ so now I just get up early and see the highlights on breakfast tv Sad

I saw the grand Budapest hotel at the cinema, I don't usually like Ralph finnes but I really loved the film. The look of it was fabulous. And it did make me cry at the end which I don't even do at Disney films.

Can anyone link to or copy a list of the nominees into this thread please?

AlfieandAnnieRose · 22/02/2015 12:59

I watched American Sniper the other day. I hardly recognised Bradley Cooper, he trained really hard to fit the part of Chris Kyle and do it with justice, I'm glad his dedication to the role has been recognised.

Very sad film, not the typical Hollywood war movie either.

TheSpottedZebra · 22/02/2015 13:01

I'm really shallow and I prefer the red carpet, then all the gossip afterwards.
Ooh, wonder if sky show the red carpet?

TheSpottedZebra · 22/02/2015 13:03

Hmm, seems it's on sky living from 11.30.
But will it be catty and low brow enough for me?

AlfieandAnnieRose · 22/02/2015 13:03

Do you have the E channel Zebra? They're doing all the red carpet interviews etc in the run up on there

AlfieandAnnieRose · 22/02/2015 13:04

Here's the nominees

TheSpottedZebra · 22/02/2015 13:05

I hope I have e! The channel. I shall check, thanks!

BestIsWest · 22/02/2015 13:23

Birdman is a very strange film. Michael Keaton, Edwart Norton and Emma Stone are all brilliant in it and I would be amazed if it doesn't win best cinematography. However I didn't have a clue what was going on.

BestIsWest · 22/02/2015 13:25

Oh, and the drumming. I hope they win something for the drumming.ni liked that.

nachohousekeeper · 22/02/2015 14:22

I might watch. Depends what time I get home from seeing TOM HIDDLESTON ShockShockShockShock in the flesh!!!

LucilleBluth · 22/02/2015 14:44

I hope Michael Keaton gets the Oscar, I love him. Birdman was ok, Ed Norton was fab it it. Boyhood made me cry, I loved it but it's flawed, Patricia Arquette will win.

I bloody love me an award ceremony. We used to live in Canada and I would watch them all live with champagne and chips n dips, happy days :)
