I can't help but judge people who say their favourite film is 'Love Actually'.

At Christmas a friend was trying to convince me how romantic and touching it was and that the Colin Firth/Portuguese housekeeper scenario was so amusing and poignant.

I was sitting there like Hmm, thinking has the Tia Maria fried your brain cells... I actually couldn't help picking holes in the saccharine, simplistic, nonsensical, paint-by-numbers plotting and characterisation. And then just felt like the biggest Scrooge Bah Humbug person on Earth, ruining friend's favourite Christmas film which is the biggest pile of shite ever in the history of film making... I mean I bet even Richard Curtis judges people who love this film

However, I once took another friend who is a bit of an intellectual to see Hugh Jackman in 'Les Miserables'. I was all starry eyed and tearful at the finish [in a good way] whilst she was looking at me like this Hmm and saying okay, well that was, um, a bit of an emotional journey two hours wasted of my life I will never get back

So what film do others judge you for loving and which do you judge others for?

Oh now I get it, you are pretending you go dogging rather than admitting to friends that you watch Gogglebox...

Pretty Woman

A celebration of men buying women yay let's make a Hollywood film out of it Hmm

Mama Mia, The Green Mile, Forest Gump Love Actually, Dirty Dancing I just put down to poor taste and liking overly sentimental films

PennyPinkleton · 21/01/2015 15:35

I judge people on loving Wanchorman, I don't find Will Farrell amusing at all.
I think I'm judged on my love of all films musical, my fave being Hairspray (the newer version) hence my user name!

Puddingsandpiglets · 21/01/2015 16:03

I judge people who like Will Farrell films, or Adam Sandler films, or stuff like American Pie. Also Disney. I get judged if people find out I like really nasty horror films, but it usually doesn't come up in conversation.

Millionsmom · 22/01/2015 04:27

In the lovely ladies song part.

JapaneseMargaret · 22/01/2015 04:59

Les Mis. Loved it on stage, but the movie is a pile of old shite. Hugh Jackman is, literally, covered in a pile of old shite... Envy

People would definitely judge me for enjoying Vince Vaughan comedy vehicles... Blush

Scram · 22/01/2015 05:56

anyone who prefers a remake to the original, especially King Kong, Titanic, and Scarface

KingJoffreyObviouslyWatchesHol · 22/01/2015 07:50

I judge adults who like Disney films.

Blush

My favourite film is The Wicker Man. Love Summerisle. Plenty of community spirit. No doubt I'm judged for that.

Hello, with the OP’s kind permission we’re sweeping this thread into our Films topic.

LividofLondinium · 14/02/2015 18:26

Fifty Shades of Grey. Not seen it but the negative feedback it's had regarding abuse and rape is enough to make me question the minds of anyone who thinks it's wonderful.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 14/02/2015 18:34

If you saw Dirty Dancing in the eighties when you were 14, fair enough. If you are now in your 40s and still rewatching it, I have no words.

Pretty woman
Love Actually
All dire sexist pigswill. Look at the poster for Love Actually - all middle aged men and young women.

That said, I think Zoolander is genius.

sooperdooper · 14/02/2015 18:39

I judge adults who love Disney films and I'm judging everyone who's off to watch 50 Shades of grey, I could only read half the book before having to give up on the drivel so I can't begin to imagine how bad the film will be

candykane25 · 14/02/2015 23:53

I watched Dirty Dancing for the first time in the 80s aged 24.
Reasons I loved it:
The outfits
The scenery
The music
The dancing.

I still watch it if I stumbled across it o. channel 5, it's comforting, I still hanker after most of the wardrobe, the music is toe tapping, and I really want to go to Kellermans on holiday. It's a period film, set in the 60s about love and family... Can you tell I like it??

I judge people for liking Candy Crush Saga far more than any more they could watch.

candykane25 · 14/02/2015 23:54

Sorry that should read aged 14!!!

Don't want to age 10'yrs !!!

aeon456 · 15/02/2015 04:38

All Richard Curtis films make me cringe

'The Shawshank Redemption' is a pretty predictable 'favourite film'

'Dirty Dancing' - 'Frozen' seems to be the new DD ie a film that captures the public imagination and is often incredibly mediocre/bad/woefully predictable/liked because everyone else says they like it

People don't tend to judge me on my film preferences although with some they might well say they haven't seen or heard of it, as some are foreign eg 'Show Me Love' (a Swedish film)

I've been told I like 'sick' films, as I like 'The Piano Teacher' - this upset me a bit as I see it as far more illuminating of the human condition than most mainstream rubbish!

Michael Hanneke is a brilliant director

People like what they like though I suppose...

CitronVert · 15/02/2015 05:09

Anything with zero plot but lots of dull car chases and explosions. Those Fast and Furious films spring to mind. They remind me of those baby Einstein videos. Lots of pretty colours, shapes and noises to keep toddlers viewers interested.

And they've made 7 of them I think. All the same. (Disclaimer. I've only seen the first one. It was shite.)

stillenacht1 · 15/02/2015 05:32

Totally agree with you OPSmile

stillenacht1 · 15/02/2015 05:33

About Love Actually that isSmile

Petitgrain · 15/02/2015 06:35

I judge people who like Dirty Dancing, I suppose I assume they're a bit thick. But only because my ExSIL did, and is.

candykane25 · 15/02/2015 22:30

No I'm still sticking up for dirty dancing. And I think I'm not thick.

It wasn't woefully predictable when it came out. It was a low budget independent film that wasn't heavily promoted. It's format was quite original at that time. Now of course it's predictable because its success spawned many many variants.

I don't think anyone who likes it is trying to be intellectual, in the same people who say they like Grease aren't trying to be clever, it's just a nice, feel good film, hence its popularity.
I haven't heard of people saying they like it just because other people like it. We're talking about films, it's hardly a peer pressure trigger.
I understand it's romantic pap, and not everyone's cup of tea. But I have to defend it, can't help myself.

Mintyy · 15/02/2015 22:43

Agree, op, I feel I could just have zero in common with anyone who thinks Love Actually is a worthwhile film. But it seems to be incredibly popular on Mumsnet which is rather perplexing!

People would judge me by the bucketload for often finding Jim Carrey rather funny. I have laughed out loud to films like Dumb and Dumber. I have an extremely basic/slapstick soh. Nothing makes me laugh more than Vic & Bob.

tabulahrasa · 15/02/2015 22:55

I like love actually... So judge away, lol.

It's the Emma Thompson bit that does it, and to a lesser extent laura linney and her brother...they make the rest of the film worth sitting through.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 15/02/2015 23:09

I think Dirty Dancing IS interesting as a film and a phenomenon. And I like almost everyone involved in it. But I think grown women who rewatch it religiously are ... odd.

DH loves Love Actually. He likes to watch it at Christmas eating Haagen Dazs with a blanket on his knee. considers divorce

I presume the Love Actually haters have read this.

Davros · 17/02/2015 00:01

Hooray! People who hate Pretty Woman and judge those who like it. It's absolutely dreadful. Titanic is also utter shite.
I might be judged for loving Mike Bassett England Manager, Carry On films, Hammer Horror, Taken 1&3.
I judge people who like American TV series

I like Oive Actually too, especially Emma Thpson and Laura Linney
