St Elmo's Fire - Rob Lowe is so beautiful.
Coming to America.
Trading Places.
Dirty Dancing again - don't let it be another 20 years!

WrongUnBeGone · 19/01/2015 23:49

I only discovered The Princess Bride in adulthood, yet all my American friends knew it. Literally no-one I grew up with has ever seen it. How did it pass us by? It should have been as famous as Dirty Dancing!

Lweji · 19/01/2015 23:52

The Princess Bride has often been mentioned in MN. Maybe it's a generational thing?

Sparklingbrook · 19/01/2015 23:58

For the most beautiful Rob Lowe it has to be About Last Night.

So, just watched dirty dancing
Lweji · 20/01/2015 00:01

Yes to
Ferris Bueller
Lady Hawke
Princess Bride
Never Ending Story
Footloose
When Harry met Sally
The Outsiders (it's darker and more male dominated, but you get to see a whole bunch of eventually famous hunks, and yes, lots of angst)

I love the action movies too:
Terminator (the first two)
Predator (just the first)
Alien/Aliens
Die Hard
Lethal Weapon
Last Action Hero

Lweji · 20/01/2015 00:02

Oh, yes
Coming to America
Trading Places (watched it yesterday, actually)

blossommy · 20/01/2015 00:02

Desperately Seeking Susan (Aidan Quinn!!)

Lweji · 20/01/2015 00:16

Blade Runner
Karate Kid
Flashdance
Robocop
Good Morning, Vietnam
Airplane
Indiana Jones
Ghostbusters
Back to the Future
Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
ET
Highlander
Beverly Hills Cop
The Naked Gun
To Be or Not to Be (world famous in Poland)

St Elmo's fire and all the brat pack / John Hughes movies really - defined my teenage years. Only realised just how much when i caught pretty in pink on tv the other night and realised 25 years later i new the film word for wordBlush

ewecaaaNT · 20/01/2015 07:55

Some of these films are bringing back so many memories, makes me want to have a movie marathon day!!

Incidentally, my DH loves the princess bride. He got it for me to watch and I was like whaaaaaaa?? I didn't "get" it. Although it was NOT what I was expecting. Think I'll give it another try. What was it about it you all liked??

PotatoesPastaAndBread · 20/01/2015 08:05

First Wives Club
Thelma and Louise
Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistlestop Cafe
Big

I wish it was the weekend! I could sit in the sofa having a cheesy film marathon right now!

ImWithLeerburg · 20/01/2015 08:43

St Elmo's Fire.
The Doors

Teeste · 20/01/2015 08:50

Gremlins Grin

PrimalLass · 20/01/2015 08:50

Reality Bites. Brilliant soundtrack.

xenu1 · 20/01/2015 09:05

apologies if "chick-flick" thread but the replies seem to suggest 80s generally...

"Streets of Fire" > guilty pleasure each time.

("You got a problem with that, pretty boy?")

PreviouslyMal · 20/01/2015 10:56

Another couple - The Rocketeer and Biggles.
Theres another 80s one where Sherlock holmes has been frozen andbrought back to life in modern New york, it might be called Sherlock holmes returns ( or sonething similar) I've never been able to find it on dvd

Lweji · 20/01/2015 11:10

Dead Poets Society
Romancing the Stone
Working Girl
3 Men and a Baby
The Name of the Rose
The Gods Must Be Crazy
Innerspace

And the 50 shades of the 80s: Nine 1/2 Weeks

Thank you everyone, this thread is amazing. There are so many I'd forgotten about!

Dirty Dancing, deleted scene.:

PedantMarina · 20/01/2015 18:58

If we're discussing Goldie Hawn, I have to recommend Protocol. Great "innocent in Washington DC makes good" film, and the nasty machinations of government make it still really relevant today!

But for pure 80s (& pre-) pleasure, try Foul Play (where she played opposite Chevy Chase). Wonderfully dated.

blueeyedpea · 20/01/2015 19:23

Desperately Seeking Susan (my favourite filmBlush)

hugoagogo · 20/01/2015 19:27

Say Anything

John Cusack at his very best.

chemenger · 20/01/2015 19:31

Thelma and Louise
Moonstruck.

Chandon · 20/01/2015 19:44

Mermaids

I watched Princess Bride with my 2 boys (11 and 9) and they loved it.

Back to the Future stands the test of time, IMO
