Where it finishes and you're more depressed than you were to start with.

Mine:
Stalingrado (Stalingrad) About Nazi's during (yup!) the battle of Stalingrad. In Russian. It is over 2 hours of depression.

All is lost.
Robert Redford at sea. Oh dear. For his face and the film.

The Grey.
Liam Neeson mumbles his way though misery.

The boy in the striped pyjamas

Marley & me.

Archfarchnad · 15/01/2015 19:36

Ha, this is so funny (ironic, not funny ha-ha). When I read the thread title I instantly thought 'Stalingrad'. But I saw it in German, in fact, I've just realised I'm talking about a totally different but obviously equally miserable Stalingrad film. It has the dubious honour of being the only film in a cinema that I have ever walked out of. I managed to hold out for about an hour before being overcome by a sense of meaninglessness and depression at the sheer horror of it all.

I walked out of this one

and you probably mean this one.

arlagirl · 15/01/2015 19:37

The road. Although I did enjoy it, I felt drained.

TheWordFactory · 15/01/2015 19:37

A Lars Von Trier movie - Antichrist.

DH went to bed half way through unable to take another second of it!

LeonardoAcropolis · 15/01/2015 19:45

Eden Lake. The most horrific and depressing film I have seen in a long time.

Tykeisagirl · 15/01/2015 19:47

The Piano Teacher, just misery and self harm from start to finish.

GiantGaspingSatanicCyst · 15/01/2015 19:48

Lilya 4 Ever. Amazing film but so depressing.

Ultracrepidarian · 15/01/2015 19:50

Fluke. Awful film, can't remember the end but it made me cry buckets.

ShatnersBassoon · 15/01/2015 19:54

Nil By Mouth. I wasn't expecting sunshine and happiness, but I felt like I'd had the stuffing knocked out of me.

I loved All Is Lost! I felt really tense throughout, then a moment of elation right at the end.

BOFster · 15/01/2015 19:55

Detachment, starring Adrien Brody as a substitute teacher. It is hands down the most wretched piece of cinematic gloom I have had the misfortune to attempt to watch. I abandoned it after a horribly gratuitous incident of animal cruelty was about to take place, and sobbed for an hour.

ThePriceOfMagic · 15/01/2015 19:56

Monster's Ball.

BOFster · 15/01/2015 19:56

I thought Slumdog Millionaire was horribly mis-marketed as a 'feel-good' film too. Child prostitution and maiming is no fun.

AWholeLottaNosy · 15/01/2015 19:57

The Elephant Man. It was so depressing I just wanted him to die to end the unrelenting misery of it all. Especially as it was based on a true story. I could never watch it again.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 15/01/2015 19:57

Eden lake - I saw a trailer and could t even contemplate watching

Cathy Come Home is just gut wrenching

I got to the awful bit in Sophie's Choice and just had to put it off

Kramer v Kramer also breaks my heart

LooksLikeImStuckHere · 15/01/2015 19:57

Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World.

CatCushion · 15/01/2015 20:00

Smiley
Jacqui and Hillary (although it does have a few redeeming moments and good music).

HappyHippyChick · 15/01/2015 20:01

I watched Leaving Las Vegas expecting it to be Honeymoon in Vegas and was waiting for the flying Elvises all the way through the film. It was not the upbeat romantic comedy I was expecting Grin

It has made me resolutely avoid any films that I think will be depressing. Life is too short to watch bad stuff happening to people.

CanIKondo · 15/01/2015 20:01

Ethan Frome - another Liam Neeson being miserable one.

Valsoldknickers · 15/01/2015 20:03

Revolutionary Road (Leo and Kate, so well acted, felt empty and miserable by the end, even the music for it sets me off)

21Grams (Sean Penn and Naomi Watts, even Jesus wept, misery piled upon misery, don't know if I could watch it again)

BOFster · 15/01/2015 20:03

I started watching Joe the other night on Virgin movies. I abandoned it 15 minutes in after reading a review which said "This is one of the darkest, bleakest films I have seen in a long time. All characters, without any exception, are unhappy souls, surviving in a grim world, unable to improve their lives, prone to an almost genetically determined urge to mess things up."

It seemed unlikely to lift my mood.

CatCushion · 15/01/2015 20:04

Oh and of course there's Taken. Depressingly simplistic portrayal of trafficking.

CatCushion · 15/01/2015 20:05

Oh, hadn't heard of 'Joe'! What a review (giggles manically) Grin

Hobbes8 · 15/01/2015 20:08

Tyrannosaur with Olivia Colman. It's so fantastically acted and worth watching, but horribly bleak. A dog gets kicked to death in the first scene and it's downhill from there really.

confusedandemployed · 15/01/2015 20:08

Dolores Claiborne. I wanted to shoot myself.

GwenStacy · 15/01/2015 20:11

Requiem for a Dream.
