...isn't out on DVD yet. Any other way they could have watched it without it being pirated?! DS is 8 so is probably none the wiser, but I'm a bit Hmm. Or is this standard? Would it be over the top to mention it?

Yup - a text and mutual 'school mum' friends have let on that she's been talking Hmm

There seems to be three groups

Those that don't download / buy pirated movies

Those that do download / buy pirated movies and don't care that it's wrong

and

Those that do download / buy pirated movies but don't believe they are for doing anything wrong because everyone does it/ it doesn't deprive the movie companies/ the movie companies can afford it/ it's not even illegal / I wouldn't have watched it otherwise, I would have to wait before it's released etcetera

It's the last group I have the biggest problem with. It's the attempt to justify what they are doing that I find a hypocritical.

ElliotLovesGrub · 18/10/2014 19:12

Technically there's more than three considering many people have said they wouldn't pay for pirate DVDs, only download.

But in other news yay for it being a reverse!

HearMyRoar · 18/10/2014 19:17

Actually I think everyone on this thread has said they download or stream, this is not the same as buying pirated DVDs.

ilovepowerhoop · 18/10/2014 19:29

I dont think I have ever bought a pirate dvd but we do stream films/drama series

bigkidsdidit · 18/10/2014 19:48

I don't do either. But I do print too many journal articles Grin and I don't particularly care about others doing it

LumpySpacedPrincess · 18/10/2014 19:50

I worry with apps like showbox how much spyware you may also be downloading. Seriously, what's in it for the people who make the app?

beheated · 18/10/2014 20:05

Ha corker piddle Grin

She needs to get a grip, seriously.

windchime · 18/10/2014 20:08

My DP buys pirated dvds from a bloke who visits his place of work. Everyone queues to buy from him. Really good quality copies.

UsedtobeFeckless · 18/10/2014 21:54

I'm another who streams but doesn't buy pirated stuff ... What's the point? If you're going to part with actual cash why not buy the real deal? When DP shared a house with some other chaps there was a bloke sold knock-offs door to door ... They were invariably shit.

I download series I love but can't watch because there's no Sky or cable here then buy the box set when it comes out - the TV company gets their cash and I get my GoT fix at the same time as everyone else - who loses out?

Put me in the Bad-but-doesn't-care file.

AgaPanthers · 18/10/2014 22:29

Apparently this was released to Itunes in Russia on 31st August. And this was pirated.

The (pirated) blu-ray version came out only today though.

AgaPanthers · 18/10/2014 22:30

Where did you get your copy from MrsPiddle?

MrsPiddlewink · 18/10/2014 22:47

Downloaded it from Pirate Bay

Love those Piratical Chappies - feeding my Jon Snow/Tyrion fixation ... It's a public service I tells ye! ( Arrr )

Twentythree9teen · 19/10/2014 03:40

>What you are doing though it not paying someone for the work they have done.

So you honestly believe that Ribert Downey Jnr. goes to pick up his paycheque for "Iron Man 3" and the movie company says "Sorry, we can't pay you. Too much piracy."? Or the costume designer or electrician for that matter. How do you imagine the movie industry works?

> they need the DVD sales and cinema ticket sales to keep going.

So, as pretty much everyone here says they do it, you must sincerely believe that the film industry is in financial trouble. Fewer films made, released etc. and the films they do make have lower profits, is that right?

Twentythree9teen · 19/10/2014 03:43

Now that we know it's a reverse … where did you get the film, OP?

Bootleg DVD? Download? Streamed using a VPN or proxy? Was it a rip, a cam, an R5? Intrusive hard-burned Chinese subtitles? How was the quality?

MrsPiddlewink · 19/10/2014 07:05

Download - excellent quality Grin

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 19/10/2014 07:26

So what would happen to the film industry if everyone pirated? Didn't bother going to the cinema, buying dvds or using movie packages/legit streaming?

SnookyPooky · 19/10/2014 07:36

We have an android box and also use Putlocker regularly to watch unreleased in UK films. Not spending money at the cinema when I can watch it for free at home.

DogCalledRudis · 19/10/2014 07:42

What would happen? And what's happening now? Availability of downloading didn't stop people going to cinemas, concerts, buying dvds, etc.
And downloaders wouldn't stop Brad Pitt from buying another castle.

Bluegrass · 19/10/2014 08:15

But it has DogCalledRudis. Dvd sales are dropping off a cliff, blu Ray never really took off, cinema attendance is pretty crap. The industry's having to struggle to replace those revenues.

Fundamentally though, why should anyone get to enjoy the benefits of other people's labour without paying them for it. It reminds me of a line from The Ladykillers when Alec Guinness's character excuses the theft of money from a bank on the basis that it's all insured and all it really costs anyone is a farthing on their insurance premiums. You can't really fault the reasoning but still!

Twentythree9teen · 19/10/2014 08:28

If nobody went to the cinema then yes, the movie industry would be completely broke. But people do, in droves. There have been a couple of billion dollar films this year alone. My family have spent a good $500 on the cinema this year.

For most of the history of cinema that was the only way they got money. It still is the main way they get money. For all their lies and threats and coseying up to givernments and special pleading, and some of the dodgiest accounting in the history of life on earth* they're doing fine.

  • ask me how much money "Order of the Phoenix" made some time.
Bluegrass · 19/10/2014 08:37

The massive hits are a tiny minority of films though. They subsidise the others. Making high budget films is incredibly risky, they can destroy studios. That's part of the reason there is so little originality in Hollywood, they endlessly remake films which did well because they don't want to take the financial risk of a flop.

MidLifeClitoris · 19/10/2014 08:38

So what had the outraged mum said?

DogCalledRudis · 19/10/2014 08:47
  1. cinema attendance is crap? That's why they keep building multiplexes?
  2. dvd sales -- well, there are things like netflix, itunes, sky movies, etc.
  3. dvd's now come with all sorts of extra stuff. Which is a positive thing. Distributors know they need to make their product more attractive.
  4. bluray hard to say. Remember this thing called Video CD? "Better than VHS, cheaper than DVD" the thing was doomed. Maybe it just isn't the product that the public needs.
  5. censorship -- if you're a young person, some things just won't be sold to you. Or certain materials are being banned from public screening/sale because of whatever reasons.
