...isn't out on DVD yet. Any other way they could have watched it without it being pirated?! DS is 8 so is probably none the wiser, but I'm a bit Hmm. Or is this standard? Would it be over the top to mention it?

OP posts:
Ilovexmastime · 17/10/2014 13:55

I started breaking the law at an early age... I found a tape of top of the pops from Xmas day 1979 in the attic last week. I remember holding a microphone in front of the TV and banning the rest of the family from talking, I was 7.

KirjavaTheCat · 17/10/2014 13:57

I must say I'm quite pleasantly surprised at how many people don't give a shit about this. I was expecting outrage.

Mumto3dc · 17/10/2014 14:37

See I'm really shocked that so many people think illegally downloading films etc is ok.
How is it any different to going in a shop and putting a DVD in your bag?

I judge you as either immoral or just downright stupid

FavaBeanPyramidScheme · 17/10/2014 14:39

I definitely didn't download the Walking Dead on Monday either Grin Eyebrows firmly staying down over here.

googoodolly · 17/10/2014 14:44

It's no different to borrowing a DVD off a friend and copying it through your laptop or DVD player.

neverletgojack · 17/10/2014 14:47

mumof3....
yeah it is, you just click a button.

No lookout, sunglasses or large handbag needed.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 17/10/2014 14:49

This thread has given me a really good chuckle Grin

OP seriously you need to relax a little. You can't vet every person that your DS comes into contact with to this extent, you will end up having to keep him at home so that he doesn't associate with 'criminals'.

teenagetantrums · 17/10/2014 15:11

both my teenagers can downland any film they like,(not sure how) yes its illegal, but really its not that big of a drama, we still go to the cinema if we went to see a film on a big screen, its not like we would but the DVD anyway, and to be honest i dont really care, the movie industry make enough money

ChickenMe · 17/10/2014 16:09

Pick your battles OP. Do they seem like decent, kind people? Is your son happy to go round there?

ILovePud · 17/10/2014 17:10

I think the difference between stealing a DVD from a shop and unauthorised downloading of a film is that the downloaded film is still there, you're not depriving anyone else of it. I'm not sure I buy the idea that downloading films is depriving the industry of revenue as I'm not sure that those same people would go and buy the DVD if they couldn't download it.

Alisvolatpropiis · 17/10/2014 17:47

This is not something I could bring myself to care about.

BackOnlyBriefly · 17/10/2014 20:47

I'm currently watching a box set that I bought from Amazon. I can't do that very often so in between I download them. This harms no one because I couldn't have bought those anyway.

The other thing is that most of what I get I could have watched on TV, but a lot less conveniently. If I see episode 17 of something and like it I can go get the whole series. There's often no way legally to watch the earlier episodes.

HoVis2001 · 17/10/2014 21:19

I might be going made but I was under the impression that streaming is not, in fact, illegal? Being the person who uploads is illegal, but watching it online (not dowloading) is, technically, legal. I think there was a case which indicated the precedent for this quite recently...

Downloading generally ends up being illegal AFAIK because downloads are often via torrents which (I think) involve you helping to provide the file to other peers (P2P sharing) -- unless being a peer in a bit-torrent is technically different from being the original uploader...

Films I think are slightly different but until certain big, famous shows start making it possible for people outside of the country of origin and lacking a TV and Sky subscription to start watching episodes online legally then it's always going to happen. The TV-watching habits of, I think, people born post-1990 are quite different from anything before; much more likely to watch only certain shows as and when they have time, and to be accessing shows via a computer rather than a TV.

HoVis2001 · 17/10/2014 21:20

*go mad

BackOnlyBriefly · 17/10/2014 23:22

Apparently you are right that watching a streamed movie isn't illegal for the person watching it. Which is a daft distinction really. After all if their argument is that a downloader will not then buy the DVD then nor will the viewer of the stream. Additionally I can if I wish save anything streamed to my computer as a file.

Part of the problem is that there isn't a law that says you can arrest people for not spending enough on DVDs so they rely on copyright infringement laws and for that you must give it or show it to someone else.

So what we have is a heap of laws that have been twisted to achieve an end, but which don't really make sense.

FACT says "Illegal streaming allows you to view unauthorised copyrighted content on demand without downloading the illegal file" Which makes little sense because of course the file is downloaded with either method. If you don't use software to save it then it gets deleted after, but it's still downloaded.

HoVis2001 · 17/10/2014 23:28

Does a streamed file get saved, even temporarily, onto your computer's hard-drive? I didn't know that.

I genuinely think the TV industry would make a lot of money making series available for download / streaming on a pay-per-view sort of model (rather than subscription models like Netflix which have a somewhat limited selection).

BackOnlyBriefly · 17/10/2014 23:41

Well if you don't use the extra software then it won't be saved permanently. I 'think' the whole file does briefly exist as a temp file by the time you finish watching it. It could delete each block after you watch it, but I don't think it does. I don't watch streamed films often these days, but if you can rewind back to an earlier part quickly then it must exist as a whole file. If jumping back a bit is slow then it is deleting it as it goes along and therefore has to download that bit again.

TOADfan · 17/10/2014 23:51

If I buy a DVD in a charity shops or on eBay is this illegal as I'm stopping the maker getting money?

Ffs anything second hand could be considered piracy in that way as you are effectively taking money from the company it was originally sold by.

Never have I read a thread where I wanna slap some sense into the OP so much. literally but that annoying

TOADfan · 17/10/2014 23:52

Sorry that was meant to be *not literally scored out.

Bambambini · 18/10/2014 00:02

It's very, very common and I don't like piracy but I would just let it go (I looked in to see if they had watched The Human Centipede or Saw or summat). I don't buy pirate films but I like to support the film industry and don't like to support the dodgy gangs behind piracy. I don't really care so much what others do - It's a personal thing for me.

Twentythree9teen · 18/10/2014 01:35

How is it different to stealing a DVD from a shop? Because before you did it the shop had 10 DVDs and now they have 9.

A five-year-old child could understand the difference. What a bizarre argument.

The main thing to remember is that, now that downloading is so common, Hollywood studios hardly make movies any more, actors have fallen on hard times and cinemas are empty. It's a tragedy.

my2centsis · 18/10/2014 01:40

Seriously??

There are website such as PUTLOCKER you can watch movies on fgs these people had your kid over night an you still find something to wing about

my2centsis · 18/10/2014 01:40

*winge

AskYourselfWhy · 18/10/2014 01:45

My brother illegally downloads everything, movies, games, music and computer software. I buy everything. I sort of. Feel like a mug but I just can't bring myself to download something illegally. It is definitely stealing even if 'everyone' does it. I've no particular compassion towards the film industry either.

I just think it's easier to have straightforward rules for yourself. It makes life simpler. I don't steal and that it really. I dont go around getting mad with people that do ...unless they are hypocritical about it.

My brother doesn't give a shit if he steals - it doesn't bother him at all, at least he is honest about it. Wink

AskYourselfWhy · 18/10/2014 01:51

I forgot to add..

It wouldn't bother me if my kid had seen an illegally downloaded movie at someone's house though
