...isn't out on DVD yet. Any other way they could have watched it without it being pirated?! DS is 8 so is probably none the wiser, but I'm a bit Hmm. Or is this standard? Would it be over the top to mention it?

Ds watched how to train your dragon 2 months ago on cartoon hd...I didn't know it hadn't even been released yet Blush

JapaneseMargaret · 18/10/2014 02:11

I thought you were going to say that 'the film DS watched at his mates last night ... was a gruesome R18 horror' or something.

I don't illegally download, mainly because I don't know how, am not a particular film/TV buff, and have no inclination to learn.

But, my goodness, I can't even imagine this bothering me about someone I knew.

The person who said that if you recorded tunes off the radio in the 80s and 90s then you're no better, was right.

Twentythree9teen · 18/10/2014 07:16

Here's a question for those who've always bought DVDs. Do you think you own those films and have the right to watch them wherever and whenever you want?

fairyfuckwings · 18/10/2014 08:05

My ex always downloads films. The only reason I don't is that I don't know how to do it plus my laptop is rubbish.

However, this thread has been enlightening! I'd never heard of an android box. I'm definitely going to put one on my Christmas list. Anyone have any recommendations?

Meloria · 18/10/2014 08:44

Does no one feel bad about what happens to the profits from pirated DVDs? There is clear evidence that it's fed into for more serious crimes like trafficking and drug distribution.

And for anyone that downloads, costing film companies mere pence in lost profits, perhaps I'll come and have a little bite of food from your fridge. You'll still have plenty left. Bit once I bring all my friends and colleagues and everyone one street you won't have much left at all will you?

Stealing is stealing whether it's from a huge multinational film company or from your next door neighbour.

AskYourselfWhy · 18/10/2014 09:24

23nineteen. Umm, yes I think I own the rights to watch them, but there not for 'public' showing. I think you are not meant to lend or sell them.

That was a complete guess. Did I get it completely wrong Grin ?

I do lend movie to friends though so I'm not quite ready to collect my halo.

fairyfuckwings · 18/10/2014 09:27

I think everyone on here is talking about illegal downloads meloria - not pirated dvds which are two different issues.

And no, it's not the same as you stealing food from my home. To do that you'd have to "break and enter" my home. Then you'd also be trespassing if you were sat at my table eating it. In addition to stealing my food. So I really don't think that's a good analogy at all.

ChoudeBruxelles · 18/10/2014 09:31

It's on showbox has been for a few weeks. Downloaded it for ds.

Twentythree9teen · 18/10/2014 09:37

> There is clear evidence that it's fed into for more serious crimes like trafficking and drug distribution.

Please link to it.

Twentythree9teen · 18/10/2014 09:40

What if you moved to America? Do you have the right to watch them there?

AskYourselfWhy · 18/10/2014 09:48

twentythree19 Go on, put us out of our misery and tell us what we are actually buying when we buy a DVD. Or do I need to google.

googoodolly · 18/10/2014 09:55

Downloading a film is NOT the same as breaking into someone's house and eating their food, don't be so ridiculous.

The former doesn't involve breaking and entering or trespass, for starters.

Twentythree9teen · 18/10/2014 10:01

If you had a magical food-copying machine in your fridge that could feed the whole street at no cost, now that would be a good analogy.

AskYourselfWhy · 18/10/2014 10:05

It's not like breaking and entry but it is still theft. I can't be arsed googling but I'd be certain that organised crime is involved in this type of property theft. It's carried out on a huge scale - it's not small time crime Confused. Maybe a lot of the manufacter takes place in the Far East/ China but I bet it's still 'organised crime'

Twentythree9teen · 18/10/2014 10:06

If you moved to America your UK DVDs wouldn't work. You have bought UK-locked DVDs. You would be obliged to buy them all over again.

You could buy a special player which let you watch them or modify an existing one but that would also be illegal, technically.

You don't really own those films. You only have a sort of licence to watch them in certain parts of the world.

Twentythree9teen · 18/10/2014 10:12

> It's not like breaking and entry but it is still theft.

It is absolutely not theft. Theft is when you have a physical object and I take it away from you and you don't have it any more. The offence, which is almost never prosecuted, is "copying something you don't have a contract giving you permission to copy".

Tomuchtosay · 18/10/2014 10:20

What tickles me is that the OP hasn't been back on since finding out her DC has being been watching illegally shown films at school!
Please come back OP and express your disgust at the school and PTA.

AskYourselfWhy · 18/10/2014 10:41

Ok, I didn't know the exact legal terms but it's still taking something thats not yours to take.

I guess it makes it more palatable not to call it theft but its still wrong and its still illegal. Some people don't care and are happy to pick and choose what laws they comply with. Some people like to get things for free and like to find ways to justify it so it doesn't sound so bad. What I really dislike is hypocrites: people that would disapprove of others stealing but are happy to buy pirated material.

Doesn't the term intellectual property theft apply to pirated videos?

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 18/10/2014 10:48

I don't know anyone who doesn't illegally download music or films.

ilovepowerhoop · 18/10/2014 10:51

You don't even have to buy the downloaded films though, they are free.

googoodolly · 18/10/2014 10:56

It's not pirated, though Confused

If I borrow my friend's boxset of say, Game of Thrones, take it home, copy it all onto blank DVD's and give him back the boxset, would you consider that theft? Because it's the same thing as downloading a copy for free. I haven't paid for it either way.

AskYourselfWhy · 18/10/2014 11:15

everyone does it ?? That's teen talk 101 Grin

I have dozens of movies and box sets and not one of them is a pirated copy. If I can't afford a new movie I dont buy it. I never shoplifted either. I dont think I am unusual. I'd rather other people didn't illegally download or copy things as I would hope that I would then pay less for my legal copies. I don't loose sleep over it but I'd rather not be disadvantaged for other people's dishonesty.
I've been on MN threads about shoplifting and I realise there are lots of people who think it's ok to steal things. Unfortunately there is not much I can do about it.

snice · 18/10/2014 11:33

This thread has been an eye opener for me. I was aware of the whole knock off dvds at carboots scenario but had no idea that illegal downloads were so commonplace. It must be an age thing as none of my late 40s/50something acquaintances do this. I must be a right old fuddy duddy as it just seems wrong to me

flamingoland · 18/10/2014 12:38

seriously, get a grip Confused Confused

snice · 18/10/2014 12:42

Who, me?
I'm not going to apologise for feeling that no matter how many people do this it's wrong.
