...isn't out on DVD yet. Any other way they could have watched it without it being pirated?! DS is 8 so is probably none the wiser, but I'm a bit Hmm. Or is this standard? Would it be over the top to mention it?

Oops, sorry, next month not tomorrow.

Yeeeah it's blatantly downloaded Grin

QueenofallIsee · 16/10/2014 13:18

I really hate piracy but I do tend to keep my trap shut when people talk about it - maybe that makes me a wuss, its a pick your battles thing I think. I would never in a million years make an illegal copy myself - it feels the same as stealing from a shop to me

FrootLoops · 16/10/2014 13:18

We have BT TV and can buy some films on it at the same time they are in the cinema, could it be something like that?

QuillPen · 16/10/2014 13:20

I wouldn't say anything, but it would make me change my opinion on the parents...

I found out someone I know had done this and I was quite shocked. It does make me question what else they think is "ok"...

19lottie82 · 16/10/2014 13:20

I'd pay to download more stuff (legally) from iTunes if it wasn't such a blatant rip off. they charge the same price as physical copies of CDs and Movies, when their costs are obviously minute in comparison.

MrsPiddlewink · 16/10/2014 13:21

Quillpen.... that's exactly it! Makes me question if I'll feel Ok with him going round there again. Glad it's not just me!

Quillpen - In the greatest respect, I think you're being a little naïve here, if you were "shocked". I'd say 75% of my friends / colleagues illegally download or stream movies, and the majority of the remaining 25% only don't because they don't know how.

TrisisFour · 16/10/2014 13:22

It's been illegally downloaded I imagine.

Not something I have or will ever do (I don't agree with it) and won't watch those things in my house if people have brought them around. But it wasn't in your house, it was in theirs so I wouldn't worry about it and wouldn't say anything.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 16/10/2014 13:24

How to Train Your Dragon 2 is not out yet on home entertainment.

Some films have a window on catch up or iTunes or sky before releasing on DVD but this one definitely doesn't so it was pirated.

You can buy little box things that you plug into your telly and hook up to your broadband and stream movies. Like any film. Old or new or not yet released. They Are fab. Is that illegal as it's not downloading?
If they are not released and you are not accessing through a legal platform, then yes, it's illegal. If you are streaming on e.g. Netflix or Amazon Prime then it's fine. If it's a filesharing site and a film not otherwise available in the UK, it's illegal.

KirjavaTheCat · 16/10/2014 13:24

Literally every single person I know illegally downloads and have done for years. I cannot think of anyone I know who doesn't.

Not commenting if it's moral or not, just an observation.

Corestrategy · 16/10/2014 13:25

I found out someone I know had done this and I was quite shocked. It does make me question what else they think is "ok"...

I don't know how old you are Quillpen but did you never tape the top 20 from the radio? Same kind of thing?

19lottie82 · 16/10/2014 13:26

Loads of people haven't actually "downloaded" movies, but stream movies on sites / apps like Afdah, Popcorn Time and Cartoon HD, they think it's different (ie. OK but downloading isn't), but they're not.

MrsPiddlewink · 16/10/2014 13:27

But it is illegal guys?! I wouldn't say it's a case of morals... more breaking the law or not...?

OP posts:
TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 16/10/2014 13:29

Yes, it is illegal. And you can be prosecuted for it. (well not YOU in this instance obvs)

19lottie82 · 16/10/2014 13:29

They say the average person breaks the law twice a day, in some sense or another.....

MrsPiddlewink · 16/10/2014 13:30

Then why the jeff is everyone doing it?!

OP posts:
MrsPiddlewink · 16/10/2014 13:31

Twice a day?! Fairly sure I don't...

OP posts:
Scarletfever · 16/10/2014 13:31

according to Wiki (i googled release date in USA)

"How to Train Your Dragon 2 will be released digitally on October 21, 2014, followed by release on DVD and Blu-ray on November 11, 2014"

MrsPiddlewink · 16/10/2014 13:32

So it was definitely a pirated copy. Great.

MrsPiddlewink · 16/10/2014 13:32

(Thank you for that though Scarlettfever)

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1059071/Mr-Average-breaks-law-day-speeding-illegal-downloading.html

And as someone has already asked, did you never tape songs from the radio, or copy cassettes when you were younger?

YackityYakYak · 16/10/2014 13:33

DH bought a completely legal copy of Madagascar 3 DVD - UK region - from Dubai a week before it was even out at the cinemas here in the UK, so its possible. US release dates are usually earlier.

googoodolly · 16/10/2014 13:34

Yes, it is illegal but the likelihood of prosecution is TINY, and the government have to send you warning letters first before they can do anything about it. They mostly go after the uploaders, though, as without them, nobody would be able to download anything.

It's not something I would lose any sleep over. Maybe if film companies/iTunes didn't charge such obscene amounts for DVD's and boxsets, downloads wouldn't be so commonplace.

19lottie82 · 16/10/2014 13:35

Then why the jeff is everyone doing it?!

The chances of your average "downloader" being prosecuted are, well, you have more chance of winning the lottery.

If you are "uploading" on HUGE scales (providing the films for people to download) then the piracy enforcement agencies may try and come after you, but the average Joe? No.

YackityYakYak · 16/10/2014 13:37

Oh, apparently its available on You Tube. Guessing that's not legal though...
