...isn't out on DVD yet. Any other way they could have watched it without it being pirated?! DS is 8 so is probably none the wiser, but I'm a bit Hmm. Or is this standard? Would it be over the top to mention it?

yeah when you see the utter wastefulness of big movie production you lose sympathy with their cries of poverty/ young filmmakers etc

QuillPen · 16/10/2014 19:09

I read the 20 crimes. Apart from maybe speeding (I might have unintentionally crept over the limit once or twice), I haven' done any of the other crimes since I have been an adult (I did ride on pavements as a child).

I am proud of that, not ashamed!

I wouldn't stop my children being friends with children whose parents illegally downloaded things or going round their houses, but it would make me raise my eyebrows (in private).

somewherewest · 16/10/2014 19:31

You would be raising your eyebrows at a lot of people then! According to the BBC the most recent episode of the Walking Dead was illegally downloaded 1.25 million times within 24 hours of going out in the US. Obviously I wasn't one of those people

EvilRingahBitch · 16/10/2014 20:07

If you don't drive or cycle or smoke or have a dog then it's very easy indeed not to commit any of those top 20 crimes. Mind you I did go to university when I was 17 so I did enough underaged drinking in that year to make up for a lifetime of law-abidance (if that's a word, which it's not).

Newdawnforever · 16/10/2014 20:23

Most people download now and everybody under thirty does it, it's up to the film companies to choose to enter the 21 century. I'd think someone was very odd if they mentioned that the movie I watched wasn't out yet, it is out if we can watch it. Why would anyone wait for the corporate release when they can get it from the net?Confused

LST · 16/10/2014 21:00

Dp downloaded that last week. We wait until it's been released on dvd as the copy is always better.

MrsPiddlewink · 17/10/2014 11:31

So, our school holds the occasional movie night - organised by the PTA. Hypothetically - if this parent loans one of their pirated movies - that would be Ok by your standards - because, well, we all break the law anyway?!

19lottie82 · 17/10/2014 11:33

OP - I wouldn't lose any sleep over it, no.
If you're in a car with someone who goes above the speed limit, even in the slightest. DO you immediately tell them to slow down?

WD41 · 17/10/2014 11:46

Downloading is commonplace

If somebody had a word because their DC had watched something at our house which wasn't out on DVD yet I would think they had a screw loose

Iwantmyparcel · 17/10/2014 11:49

Yes I honestly wouldn't care even a little.

Iwantmyparcel · 17/10/2014 11:49

If you said anything to be in the nicest possible way I would think you were a little odd.

ChippingInLatteLover · 17/10/2014 11:55

I wouldn't even notice, much less care.

You are very concerned about all of this, much more concerned than makes any sense. Are you otherwise OK or are you focusing on all of this to avoid a real problem?

KirjavaTheCat · 17/10/2014 11:58

Obviously it just wouldn't happen in a school Hmm

If it did I wouldn't care though.

If you want to get technical though, public showing of any home entertainment DVD withhout the proper permissions is illegal - which is what schools do on a regular basis when they have end-of-term DVD assemblies/days. I hope your children avert their eyes OP!

ilovepowerhoop · 17/10/2014 12:00

they arent downloaded onto a dvd disc though, they are streamed directly onto the tv so unlikely that a school would do that

gingee · 17/10/2014 12:16

Dont get worked up about it. It's not going to harm him, I thought you were going to say he's 8 and they watched Texas Chainsaw Massacre or something!!!

ElliotLovesGrub · 17/10/2014 12:28

I am tickled by the PTA movie night comparison. Home DVDs aren't for public viewing like that so they are breaking similar laws! Grin

gingee · 17/10/2014 12:31

Exactly - a DVD bought in a shop is not supposedto be shown at a 'movie' night or even in a classroom really, IIRC theres a disclaimer/warning at the beginning stating this. Shhh don't tell OP

ChippingInLatteLover · 17/10/2014 12:32

Home DVDs aren't for public viewing Shock No, they most certainly are not!!

gingee · 17/10/2014 12:35

chipping can you imagine if one of those special home DVDs was shown at the pta fundraiser???Grin

ElliotLovesGrub · 17/10/2014 12:38
Grin
AllThatGlistens · 17/10/2014 12:42

Oh goodness I know this thread was started in all seriousness, but it has made me Grin Grin Grin

neverletgojack · 17/10/2014 13:04

oh my god.

Illegally watched/downloaded movies...
I thought this was going to be about the 8 year old watching some sort of horror gore fest.....

not 'how to train your dragon 2'Grin Grin Grin

Poopooweewee · 17/10/2014 13:18

ElliotLovesGrub and HappyYoni couldn't agree more. Some people are so uptight! Chill out people, or if you simply must agonise over something, how about making it over something important.

Twentythree9teen · 17/10/2014 13:37

our school holds the occasional movie night - organised by the PTA

Yes this made me laugh like a drain after all the fretting over the "illegal" movie the child watched. The school movie night is just as illegal so you'd better start feeling retrospectively guilty for all of those, and you'd better go and have a word to the school, and the PTA.

Twentythree9teen · 17/10/2014 13:39

All of the people claiming never to have broken any of the laws on the Daily Mail's top twenty list, you've never had food or drink while driving? Maybe you don't drive.
