The film DS watched at his mates last night....

...isn't out on DVD yet. Any other way they could have watched it without it being pirated?! DS is 8 so is probably none the wiser, but I'm a bit Hmm. Or is this standard? Would it be over the top to mention it?

I'd imagine its only illegal to download the thing.

They haven't tricked your son into becoming a criminal Hmm

Gruntfuttock · 16/10/2014 16:52

19lottie82 "They say the average person breaks the law twice a day, in some sense or another....."

Like how? Examples?

19lottie82 · 16/10/2014 16:56

Grunt....... I posted a link.....

Gruntfuttock · 16/10/2014 17:00

Thank you 19lottie82, I'm sorry about that, I hadn't read all the thread before posting. I've just read the top 20 crimes on that link and I haven't committed a single one of them.

MrsPiddlewink · 16/10/2014 17:03

Me neither Grunt - clearly we're unusual

Be grateful it was an age appropriate film!
Honestly OP if you are that worried, I'd suggest sleepovers are not for you.
I'm being serious, you can't police their activity and other parents have very different morals and standards.

Sallystyle · 16/10/2014 17:13

If you are worried about downloading movies and viruses than you need a mac ;)

I wouldn't think twice about. I don't think I know anyone irl who doesn't do it.

FreckledLeopard · 16/10/2014 17:14

I have to say, if this is all you have to worry about you must lead a very charmed life....

Pyjamaramadrama · 16/10/2014 17:16

Honestly op if you're going to start crossing off friends because they watched an illegally downloaded film then you're going to be very lonely as will your ds. I don't know anybody who hasn't watched a pirate DVD.

And if it's keeping you awake at night then you clearly don't have enough to worry about and should channel your morals into something worthwhile.

EvilRingahBitch · 16/10/2014 17:18

Some people in the industry get legal advance copies of DVDs of course. If it was later in the year I'd say the parents might (big big "might" I grant you) be BAFTA members - they get copies of hundreds of films "for their consideration" every year, but it's unlikely in October. I watch loads of "unreleased" DVDs at a BAFTA-voting mate's house, entirely legally.

Anyway, for what it's worth OP, I'm with you - I'd feel a bit twitchy about my DS benefiting from someone else's criminal activity too. But it's so widespread that you can't really do anything about it.

Pyjamaramadrama · 16/10/2014 17:19

A valid worry would be something like. Ds went round his mates and they watched a 15/18 film, the older brother came in pissed and the dad was smoking weed upstairs.

Suttonmum1 · 16/10/2014 17:25

I agree with you OP. Piracy is theft, and a particularly bad example to kids that young. I would definitely say something, but just by saying "I tried to buy that DVD the other day but couldn't find it in the shops, where did you get it?"

You wouldn't break in to someone's house and steal their wages, but that's exactly what you're doing with piracy.

Just because other people have no morals doesn't mean you let your kids think it's OK.

needyoumorethanwantyou · 16/10/2014 17:32

Good luck to anyone in Court for breaking into someone's house and stealing their wages claiming 'it's exactly the same as watching a pirated DVD'.

ILovePud · 16/10/2014 17:46

I think the parents' whose house your DS went to would be none too pleased if you brought this up, nobody likes to be told off. I can appreciate that you feel uncomfortable about illegal downloads and that's fair enough but I don't think it's reasonable to extrapolate that because they do this your son will be unsafe? damaged? by going to their house. It's a difficult line to tread but when someone is having your child over to play I think you have to think really carefully about trying to dictate conditions.

Stampysladygarden · 16/10/2014 17:49

If it's out that soon it could be a press review copy. Loads go out and not illegal.

your not unusual - I think it's wrong as well and wouldn't like my lot watching films illegally

My ex childminder used to do - I was unimpressed

ghostyslovesheep · 16/10/2014 17:58

gah! You're not your

NanFucker · 16/10/2014 18:05

If they've set netflix up to the American version you can often watch kids films early as the release dates are different

SistersOfPercy · 16/10/2014 18:06

EatShit You should have been around in the early 80's when we had a pirated video of ET.
Oh the excitement of watching what we thought was a little grey alien in a very bad snowstorm.

Doesn't bother me one bit. I download most of the TV I watch (mostly US Series) or I'd be waiting forever to watch it here.

Iwantmyparcel · 16/10/2014 18:09

I always download/stream films. It's normal !

Technical note - it's not theft, it's copyright infringement.

HappyYoni · 16/10/2014 18:36

I think it's quite quaint that there are people who worry about this!
