I know this isn't strictly a conversation about movies but i wondered if any of you movie buffs have an in-car DVD player and what you think of them. How long do they keep kids happy for? (mine are 3.5 and 1). Also, how do they compare with normal DVD players when you use them with a standard TV?

I need help with this too, looked at them today in Currys, almost bought a twin screen and a single one, but they didnt have them in stock. Think that may be the best bet with three argumentative eight yr olds!

Which one did you get, and apart from the puking are you pleased with it?

pupuce · 26/06/2006 21:39

Interested in this too.... Have a 14h car journey ahead!

GarfieldsGirl · 26/06/2006 21:49

I have a twin screen one. It cost us £270 a few years ago, but for the stressfree journeys we now have - DPs family 300 miles away - with ds1 I would quite happily have paid £2700!

We used to have to stop at every service station, so a 4hr journey became 8hrs! Now we stop once, and thats for me to fill my face! I would def reccommend getting one.

I have a 2 screen one that we got last year 7" screens but one DVD player and we love it even use it on short trips now as it keeps kids entertained... and no vomiting in fact reduced it as DS used to claim back seat made him car sick .... DVD now keeps him back there! I love them on holiday as you can plug them into mains so kids can watch DVDs in bed as a treat... really really worth the money -- never heard "are we there yet?" since we bought them!!

Now kids are getting older, am hoping they will get into headphones as quite annoying hearing the soundtrack but small price to pay really... if kids have very different film interests, get 2 DVS players to stop squabbles over which DVD is watched

pupuce · 26/06/2006 22:12

What brand ? What price ? From where ?

pupuce · 27/06/2006 09:18

Hi,
I have today just ordered a 7" ferguson twin screen for £149.50p and a Matsui 8" single player for £99. So for £250 I certainly hope well get some peace on our next long trip. This way two sit in the middle of the car watching one movie and one at the back watching something else, hope it works!Ordered from Currys.

LucyCampCat · 27/06/2006 15:22

We've got This one from Argos and it's great! Try to get movies rather than short programmes or you will find them wanting to change them, and bear in mind that they only fit onto one side of the car, the screen with the player attached has to go on the passenger seat IYSWIM as the leads aren't long enough to be swapped. Does that make sense?

and have a practice run at fitting it into the car before you go on holiday, I first did mine at 5am, took forever

Gillian76 · 27/06/2006 15:32

Have been wondering about this too...

I saw one in the argos sale and got excited cos it was £99.00. Then noticed the screen was 4.5ins. Prob too small, eh?

LucyCampCat · 27/06/2006 15:34

Ours are 7" and are just about the right size, I couldn't watch one any smaller.

crunchie · 27/06/2006 15:41

We got a basic model a couple of years ago, it is just a portable DVD player. We do make them use headphones though! (theyare 7 and 5 now) It is great on long journeys, but it is not fixed in the car. This has pros and cons. Pro being when we get to the campsite if it is chucking it down or they want an hour peace and quiet, they can watch a film. Cons mean we have to rig up a system to keep the palyer in place with straps etc. Paid about £129 and this will be the 3rd or 4th summer we will use use it. We don't use it all the time though, as we forget to charge it or whatever.

Gillian76 · 29/06/2006 09:18

Does anyone have experience of any of these?

GarfieldsGirl · 29/06/2006 09:37

Gillian - The Venturer is the one that I have. I would highly reccommend it to anyone. I paid more than double that price and would happily have paid more. The screens tilt, so LOs don't have to crane their necks. Good quality pics, and you can play games on it too. Its one of the best things I've ever bought.

LucyCampCat · 29/06/2006 18:00

Does the Venturer one come with a mains lead so you can use it out of the car if need be, we use ours in the tent. I couldn't get the Hitachi one for love nor money in the North West!! if you can then it looks great!

GarfieldsGirl · 30/06/2006 08:34

Lucy - it doesn't come with a mains lead, but you may be able to get one, we only need it for the car so we haven't looked for one.

LucyCampCat · 30/06/2006 17:53

That was why we went for the Goodman's one so we could use it out of the car without having to buy anything else!

golds · 30/06/2006 17:57

We bought one from ASDA £79 twin screen, never had the kids so quiet on a 3 hour journey to nanny's, bought a adapter too, so kids could watch it when we got there. Highly recommend

lovey · 04/08/2007 19:48

We have built in ones on the back of the seats.... a god send!

Our car came with one that flips down from the roof (back of seats with a kicking SN 4 year old wouldnt last LOL0. TBH its fab- the kids are mesmorised by the DVD's, and we get to avoid the sort of in car figting that keeps us close to home

Bliss!

bunjies · 03/03/2008 19:09

Hi

Which car comes with an integrated dvd player??? I am soooo tempted as the kids drive me up the wall with their constant bickering on long ANY journey. We live in France and when we do the return journey to the UK by car it takes roughly 10 hours door to door and my nerves are usually shot to pieces by the time we get there!
