Im not suggesting we start a cult. But, like a cult?

Besides the sexual, child, financial abuse and fanatical aspects of a cult?

Discussion over brunch with friends yesterday who are either single by choice or miserable in LTRs turned to if we knew in our 20s what you do in your 40s, what would you have done?
After much discussion it was decided that many of our group (Im the outlier as Im happy with DH) would have happily lived somewhere such as a female only caravan park, somewhere full of a community feel, owning the land and property that you live on and a feeling of safety and community. Women only bar on site, dancing and drinks without fear of spiking or walking home
to be attacked, early morning walks with no man behind you shuffling and keeping you on edge.
We decided it did sound cult like, but not quite the end of the world, doomsday type, more of a nice woman only commune to live.

(Just think, if munsnetters had their own one, we could rear chickens and it would feed us all for years 😂)

No males over 12 we decided and we didn’t get have a debate about bio women, however we didn’t have our friend with us who is a gay man and he wasn’t allowed purely because he has a penis 😂
That and he drives us all insane in equal measure being a massive drama llama, so penis or not, we can meet him somewhere else.

I was told if I was to live there I’d have to visit DH at his home, he’s not allowed on the cult grounds. Sounds ideal.

So you kick your sons out at 13 leaving them to fend for themselves?

SerenaSemolena · 06/04/2025 15:41

It would be so lovely to be able to go out of an evening without a care for safety.

So many times I'd like to go for a run, walk or just sit in the starlight alone and just don't dare.

CallmeJim · 06/04/2025 16:13

@Bbq1 not at all, they wouldn’t live there anyway, simply stop them from visiting after 12.

My theory is this which does sound man hating but isn’t, women would choose men free spaces due to safety, a group of men actively choosing men only spaces would immediately turn into an incel breeding ground and they’d all rile one another up and become dangerous.
By all means let them have their own spaces, but they’d be done in an entirely different spirit.

Im knocking on the door of 40 so im far from old yet i still remember a sign in the pub my father drank in saying “any woman who enters this area will be whipped” and whilst seemingly just a joke, that was there during a period martial rape wasn’t illegal. And many, many of the women, my own DM included often had black eyes, broken ribs, fat lips from the men who drank there.

That sign is possibly what made me a feminist because it used to scare me so much if my mother would come over to the pool tables where I’d be playing with my dad, he may actually whip her at home.

Well l'm appalled to hear that but it just adds to my feeling - similar to yours - that we NEED women-only spaces to get away from men, but no way do they need the equivalent.

Sounds awful. I'm not really into communes and don't fear or dislike all men.

Agree. All women groups tend to get on much worse than all men groups. Cliquey behaviour, passive aggressiveness, etc. A society excluding those on the sexual offenders register or one that vets inhabitants would be better. I quite like having a male partner.

You don't seem to like women very much.

LastRoIo · 06/04/2025 16:28

I mean, why do you think women overwhelmingly vote in favour of having male bosses? There's loads of research showing that women collaborate less well than men and won't help another women the greater the seniority between them at work is.

DuskyPink1984 · 06/04/2025 16:30

God no. Women have caused far more problems in my life than men.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 06/04/2025 16:31

Luckily then no one is going to force you to live in an all female set up

i love DH to bits but I’d happily not try and find another man if (when) dies

I’m also bored beyond belief of working with men who surround themselves with handmaids who get paid less & do all the actual work for which the boss then takes all the credit

LastRoIo · 06/04/2025 16:32

I just don't understand people that drive but are terrified of being murdered. Unless they live in a really bad area. I'm much more worried about getting run over by something onsite and tbh I'm not too worried about that.

Do they really? How weird. All my female bosses have been brilliant and had my back, as I’ve had theirs.

So who would babies and children be living with from birth? You'd only keep female babies? Sounds creepily cult like..

CallmeJim · 06/04/2025 16:49

@Bbq1 i wouldn’t keep any children there.

It’s far more likely that if any resident was the mother of a boy she’d leave long before he was 12, so the issue wouldn’t arise.

SerenaSemolena · 06/04/2025 16:54

I got the distinct impression the op was suggesting this idea for women who would like and enjoy it.
Some posters seem to think it's the start of a compulsory new world order. 😂

Leafy74 · 06/04/2025 17:03

If the women in your group are in relationships with such awful men, why don't they leave? Or do they need I a man in their life?

Bbq1 · 06/04/2025 17:11

No, sounds really weird. No children, all women. No boys allowed to visit post 12. I wouldn't want to live in a female only community. Men aren't the enemy but being treated as outcasts. Some people obviously think it's an amazing idea. If there are no kid s allowed, what happens when the women age and die and aren't reolaced? Or if women get pregnant off site are they excluded from the cult?

I was surprised too. There's a fair few studies linked in the below thread. What I found most weird is that men generally seem more receptive to having a female boss than women do.

I don't know if the trend is changing however as that was a few years back. Internet stuff often doesn't give the full story IMO because only those that feel strongly tend to post. Like, a woman who has had bad experience with other women won't probably post on a sisterhood type thread. It's an interesting read the thread below. A lot of women mention being bullied at work by other women and it seems the legal sector is particularly bad.

Yes, what a good thing all the women who are saying how awful it sounds wouldn’t have to live there!

RatedDoingMagic · 06/04/2025 17:31

Sounds lovely. I'm in.

I think it would be rather like a secular "convent" without all the prayer and repression.

I read about the founding of Lacock Abbey by Countess Ela of Salisbury in the 13th century who, after her husband had died, became an Abbess (at age 51) and created a place of retreat where women could focus of creativity and spiritual growth without menfolk, and it sounded like a perfect place.

I'd like a design where the central buildings (with various sizes of flats so some women can live solo and others might choose to live in 2s/3s/4s) and grounds with plenty of space for croquet and yoga as well as communal leisure facilities, could be surrounded by a wall in which a number of half-and-half dwellings were embedded, some of which might be guest-houses where the menfolk attached to resident women might stay occasionally, and some where there might be permanent mixed-sex residents including families but the menfolk in such dwellings could only leave those properties by the front door (unless there's a fire) - they wouldn't be allowed within the enclosed area but the women who wanted to keep a man in their life could have viable options.

I couldn't think of anything worse!

Gives me Greenham Common vibes.

Wouldn't it be easier for men haters to go find an uninhabited island and go live there? For people that hate men so much they spend a lot of time and energy talking about them

Well said. Give them Canvey Island and block off the only road in and out.

Exactly! I imagine a bunch of female hippies all sitting cross legged, singing around a fire! As for being partnered with a female for dancing just no!

I'm not worked up, about t!! Just fascinated by the idea women would do this . It just sounds weird and unnatural. Sort of handmaid's tale in reverse! Fining men unless they leave their house via the front door ?! I mean...
