Im not suggesting we start a cult. But, like a cult?

Besides the sexual, child, financial abuse and fanatical aspects of a cult?

Discussion over brunch with friends yesterday who are either single by choice or miserable in LTRs turned to if we knew in our 20s what you do in your 40s, what would you have done?
After much discussion it was decided that many of our group (Im the outlier as Im happy with DH) would have happily lived somewhere such as a female only caravan park, somewhere full of a community feel, owning the land and property that you live on and a feeling of safety and community. Women only bar on site, dancing and drinks without fear of spiking or walking home
to be attacked, early morning walks with no man behind you shuffling and keeping you on edge.
We decided it did sound cult like, but not quite the end of the world, doomsday type, more of a nice woman only commune to live.

(Just think, if munsnetters had their own one, we could rear chickens and it would feed us all for years 😂)

I’d like it too.

I don’t hate men.

Just don’t like living with the constant risk of sexual assault and other forms of violence from men.

I’d love to live somewhere where I could go out for a walk at night without risk.

Men if left to their own devices would turn into women hating extremists? Many just watch sports and chat shit.

I'm sorry you lived with that fear as a child, it sounds very traumatic.

thank you. Most men would probably be pro social beings and cause no harm.
But plenty won’t.

I worked in an all-female team for years. It was friendly, cooperative, supportive, and flexible about hierarchy.

I've had the odd female boss who has been a little tricky to work with, but none came close to being as bad as the worst male bosses I've had.

And I've lived in a sort of accidenal female commune - volunteer project with accommodation, that happened to have no men. It was great apart from the one who shouted in her sleep, which is hardly a female-specific issue, and wouldn't matter at all if people have separate flats.

All-female groups are perhaps less welcoming to women who make it clear they hate other women.

I got the distinct impression the op was suggesting this idea for women who would like and enjoy it.
Some posters seem to think it's the start of a compulsory new world order. 😂

this made me laugh 🤭

It would be so lovely to be able to go out of an evening without a care for safety.

So many times I'd like to go for a run, walk or just sit in the starlight alone and just don't dare.

Or just walk around after midnight without one hand on my doorkey, the other on a hairspray!

I would have thought that was obvious, though why someone who hated women would want to join an all women commune is a mystery.

I mean, why do you think women overwhelmingly vote in favour of having male bosses? There's loads of research showing that women collaborate less well than men and won't help another women the greater the seniority between them at work is.

What’s the evidence that ‘women overwhelmingly vote for make bosses?’ Is this an actual, real study I could read?

I'm not worked up, about t!! Just fascinated by the idea women would do this . It just sounds weird and unnatural. Sort of handmaid's tale in reverse! Fining men unless they leave their house via the front door ?! I mean...

I didn't suggest fines.
I assumed that women who wanted to live in such a place would only be in relationships with men who would respect that the integrity of the female only zone and wouldn't want to trespass where they weren't wanted and where they had no right to be, any more than they would walk into any other neighbour's back garden, because decent people don't do that.

porridgecake · 06/04/2025 21:51

The idea of having a female only spaces or communities sounds lovely. It would be great to have that choice for those who wanted it.
But of course there are no female only spaces allowed now. So, it is a nice idea but impossible.
Someone has just started a thread complaining about men in the women's pool at Hampstead Ponds. The 3 Hampstead Ponds have been mixed, mixed and men for years. Just like everything else that used to be for women.

weareallcats · 06/04/2025 22:32

I have a very strong belief that women should look out for each other at all times - we need the idea of a commune but a kind of underground version that exists alongside day to day life.

Sometimes when you actually read the thread all is revealed!

LastRoIo · 07/04/2025 00:46

From the thread I already linked....

Women dislike having a female boss at work even more than men do, a new study has revealed.

Nearly 40 per cent of female workers in America would rather be led by a man, a Gallup survey found.

In contrast, just 26 per cent of men would prefer a male boss.

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2797279/women-dislike-having-female-boss-workplace-men-study-finds.html

CBS Local — A survey by MSN found that both men and women prefer to work with men rather than women in the workplace. The survey is believed to be as accurate as a scientific poll. Nearly 500,000 people supplied answers.

MSN found that 20 percent of men and 21 percent of women preferred to work with men, compared to just 6 percent of each men and women preferring to work with women.

minnesota.cbslocal.com/2017/08/04/men-women-work-study/amp/

A study found two women are less likely to cooperate than two men when one is more powerful than the other.

Similarly, two females of different rank are less likely to work together than a man and a woman.

The finding contradicts the widely held belief that women’s nurturing nature makes it natural for them to help each other out, while men are too competitive to have time for each other.

Harvard University researcher Joyce Benenson, one of the study’s authors, said that women’s instinctive distrust of females in power may make it more difficult for them to scale the career ladder.

You have to wonder if men's proclivity to help each other might be a factor in the pay gap. We joke about 'old boys clubs' but in a way it's what many women are trying to accomplish with their talk of 'the sisterhood'.

My idea of hell but happy for others to keep themselves to themselves.
Problem is, we have spent the last 40 - 50 years dismantling male only spaces, from pubs to golf clubs so establishing legal women only spaces might be difficult now, but no reason why it can't be done unofficially.

Wouldn't it be easier for men haters to go find an uninhabited island and go live there? For people that hate men so much they spend a lot of time and energy talking about them

Yes, if something is either dangerous, and/or very annoying, and should be avoided, then of course we talk about it.

I have a lovely husband, so I don't feel the need to talk about him but I do occasionally get annoyed by other men, and am happy to be informed about potential pitfalls. (And thank you to Autocorrect for suggesting "pith balls". Interesting concept, that would also work in this sentence).

I would love a nightclub just for women that wasn't a lesbian nightclub. I do like to dance but when you go to a nightclub a lot of people tend to think that you are there to pull and not to dance, because that is the only reason why they are there and that is just sad and annoying.

Britneyfan · 10/04/2025 12:40

I’d love this TBH. Especially since divorcing after domestic abuse. However I do have a son and also like decent men both sexually and in general. I do remember reading about this place in the Guardian OP which isn’t a million miles away from what you’re suggesting (it’s mainly the caravan bit of your suggestion that would put me off 🤣)
