I wasn't there so can't comment but you've reminded me I'm still cross with Data for saying Spot wasn't sentient.

Grin quite so.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 02/01/2025 14:54

This is from the listing of a chateau which we would've bought if we'd won the Euromillions in time. I so much wanted this library. It's gorgeous, & even the painting above the fireplace is of a library.

I had to look it up. An Ode to Spot is practically Vogon, to mix skiffies.

Spot looks very much like my own dear chair-scratcher, if I put him on the diet the vet is always threatening him with.

I think that looks like one of the rooms on the fifth floor of The Bluestocking. Perhaps ask one of the gerbils to show you round, @ifIwerenotanandroid

DeanElderberry · 02/01/2025 15:19

Quite a cat, Spot. Changed colour a few times and then, having been a boy for years, gave birth to a litter of kittens. Also de-evolved into a lizard for a while in a classic Brannon-Braga-doesn't-understand-evolutuion episode.

Learning that the Enterprise had a resident population of feral intact tomcats changed the way I imagined it

Hah!

OMG, the fifth floor is absolutely gorgeous. I'm claiming that bedroom & bathroom for my own this year. Or maybe the whole of the fifth floor. You lot can fight me for it this time next year. (Memories of room allocations in my quaint uni college.)

@DeanElderberry 'Quite a cat, Spot. Changed colour a few times and then, having been a boy for years, gave birth to a litter of kittens.'

Reminds me of going into work after I took an emergency day off when my cat started to give birth early in the morning & I couldn't leave her in labour. On being told my cat was ginger & white, one bloke argued with me that my cat was obviously male, since all ginger cats are male. He wouldn't give in, so I conceded & agreed with him that my cat was a male who'd just given birth to kittens.

DeanElderberry · 02/01/2025 15:53

Yes, my cousin Michael (degree in biology, and always knew best anyway) continued to insist his family's cat Paisley (big, orange, noisy) was male for the same reason, while Paisley purred with pride and suckled 'his' fine family.

Mine did much the same, except they shifted me halfway through the first year, claiming my original room was a fire hazard!

OP posts:
ifIwerenotanandroid · 02/01/2025 17:27

Was it a good room, @Magpiecomplex ? That would be frustrating. My college had a name draw & the first person out got their pick of the rooms assigned to their year. So before the draw there'd be lots of knocks on your door & a, "D'you mind if I just have a look at your room for next year?". I was lucky & got exactly what I wanted both times. In fact, I moved the furniture round in one room & found that a large bookcase had been hiding a gorgeous antique fireplace complete with original tiles.

Magpiecomplex · 02/01/2025 17:34

The first room was lovely, fireplace, dual aspect, tucked away up its own little flight of stairs (which may have been the fire hazard). But only a 2'6" bed.
Second room was larger, warmer, bigger bed and had a sink, but nowhere near as much character as the first one. Second room also had a floor to ceiling window and a highly polished floor, so I made sure to keep the desk in front of the window rather than risk sliding straight in the door and out the window! 🤣

Did that desk also add a bit of privacy? A floor to ceiling window in a bedroom could be rather “exposing”?
There’s a terrace of 3 storey houses near me where the main bedroom in each faces an A road and has a floor to ceiling window almost as wide as the room. Some of the houses have nets, others never seem to open the curtains and others just allow passers-by to enjoy the view.

Magpiecomplex · 02/01/2025 17:55

@AsWithGlad I was second floor and facing into the quad, so I made sure the curtains were closed whenever I didn't want an audience! The desk did help in that I couldn't get too close to the window so there probably wasn't much to see from ground level.

AsWithGlad · 02/01/2025 18:00

Second floor would be a bit better for not allowing a full view into the room, but what an odd design for a college room. Was it built at a time when the college was single-sex?

Magpiecomplex · 02/01/2025 18:18

Yes, it was one of the women's colleges. I think our block was a more modern infill between the library and the original rooms - nothing quite lined up properly.

This is the Bluestocking, Android, we can all have the whole fifth floor eachSmile

Aaaargh! My brain! It huuuuurts!

Magpiecomplex · 02/01/2025 22:03

Can I have the fifth floor on the first floor please? Fewer steps. Obviously the lifts never break down, but just in case.

Apparently, since this is the Bluestocking we can all have new legs. I'm not going to even try to get the AI to illustrate that.

Or maybe STITB we can all run up five flights of stairs without even being out of breath.

Or maybe STITB (& shh, don't wake up the more dedicated Trekkies) we can teleport to the fifth floor.

ErrolTheDragon · 02/01/2025 22:53

It's a bit like Hilbert's Grand Hotel, but with better interior design and staffing.

Or maybe STITB (& shh, don't wake up the more dedicated Trekkies) we can teleport to the fifth floor.

I think you'll find the turbo lifts more efficient and robust for this purpose.

Android, is 'new legs' a step too far ... ?
I insist on them being Strong New Legs, anyway.
