I want him not to be able to give me the flannel that we have to be kind to the woMen. I want assurances that we do t have to share our spaces. I want to not sound like the very nervous person that am I!

Any help appreciated?

Well done Jane. The fact that you had to keep coming back to your question, and repeating yourself so eloquently makes me despair.

If Starmer had any intention of safeguarding womens spaces all he had to say was “Yes Jane, I agree, people can’t change sex and under my watch men ,( no matter how many pieces of paper they have clutched in their manly paws) will not be given legal access to womens spaces and womens sport.”

I don’t actually expect him to say the bit in brackets. I don’t think he can bring himself to say the rest.

I've read all the thread now and my dc want me to vote Labour. I've said to them how I felt worried when in M&S trying on bras and there 100% was a man in the next cubicle trying on whatever. I told them how vulnerable I felt as the bottom line is he can hurt me a lot more than I can hurt him.

Is it really a case of one choosing who to vote for on one issue or not to vote on one issue? Why can't politicians just be straight instead of constantly second guessing what their words might mean for them.

It is not trans people's fault that they are as they are but it isn't biological females either. Trans being in their birth places is maybe going to upset them emotionally but being in their trans place can put biological woman at risk if they are rapists.

Perfectly lovely males, trans or not, do not belong in female changing rooms. Because females are entitled to privacy and have the right to change without being concerned or frightened. Perfectly lovely males, trans Id or not, understand this, fully. Those going where they know they're not welcome are not Perfectly lovely. The fox knows full well he's not meant to be in the hen house. He's not there to have a piss.

Those who are saying Labour won't get your vote as a result of this - do you believe the Tories will stick to their pledge to change the Equality Act if they get in?

Genuine question and I'm not trying to tell anyone what to think re this, but I personally don't think any of the major parties will keep any promises they make on this issue at all, sadly.

BinkyBeaufort · 28/06/2024 15:03

My Labour candidate has responded to my email this morning and says:

I believe in protecting single sex spaces and think that the Equality Act should safeguard these.
Annelise Dodds has also said that the Labour Party believes in the need for biological spaces and will provide legal clarity for providers of these.

I have responded by asking for clarity Before the election, and also asking whether more easily available GRCs means men will legally change sex and therefore obtain access to female only spaces.
I also pointed out that changing sex is "twaddle".
We'll see what reaction that gets.

murasaki · 28/06/2024 15:04

You were fantastic, Jane. Clear, concise, and took no prisoners. I loved 'absolute twaddle'

I was veering towards holding my nose and voting Labour, but I think that tipped me over the edge into spoilt ballot territory. As the Lib Dems are just as bad.

CocoapuffPuff · 28/06/2024 15:08

It's like having to choose between cyanide or nightlock berries (hunger games ref, got teenagers). Both are going to kill me. Its academic isn't it, as to which to choose?

Which fucks me off no end.

Namechangey23 · 28/06/2024 15:09

At the end of the day I think he's been told to hedge his bets because of the election. If he agrees..to keep the spaces separate he knows media will have a field day and he will end up crucified like JK Rowling, bit of a paraiah. It will take away from everything, just like the antisemitism did with Jeremy Corbyn. For the record I agree their should be separate spaces for biological male and female, I also agree with JK. Ideally there would be a third trans space. I will still vote for labour however because I'll be damned if I will let the Tories screw the entire country over for another decade for the sake of this issue. Never mind male and female prisons, the country will be brimming with criminals the way the Tories are running down the county as the system is in crisis and people are being held in temporary jury cells longer than they should! If it actually came to it and women's rights were genuinely at risk I would be marching in the streets and protesting. But I doubt this is going to be Labours main focus when in power! I imagine he's keeping on the fence so he can row away from it asap once in.

CocoapuffPuff · 28/06/2024 15:13

If? IF women's rights are at risk?

Who are you, Sleeping Beauty?

murasaki · 28/06/2024 15:17

I think I shall write something like 'biological sex is a fact' on my ballot paper. Any other ideas welcome. I'm furious about this, it will be the first time I've not actively voted. But I'll still be going to the polling station as it is my duty to do so.

DBSFstupid · 28/06/2024 15:20

JanefromLondon1 · 28/06/2024 09:50

Sorry I'm still shaking. Nervous and furious all at once.

We if that doesn't tell you where you come in Labour's pecking order I do t know what does.

Bloody marvellous Jane!!! Well done you for not giving up.👏

KJK suggested "repeal the GRA".

JKRismyPatronus · 28/06/2024 15:20

Thank you Jane.

I listened to the show with my 18 year old DC. We both thought you were great, especially the twaddle comment.

You are a true suffragette 👏

arethereanyleftatall · 28/06/2024 15:23

I've just looked on Twitter and I'm getting inundated with posts on my newsfeed about an awesome Jane...💪

murasaki · 28/06/2024 15:25

ResisterRex · 28/06/2024 15:20

KJK suggested "repeal the GRA".

I'm more amend it, so birth certificates can't be falsified, and if you have one you aren't allowed into spaces for biological women. So not sure that quite works for me. But it seems to be all or nothing, so...

No one will read it anyway, I guess, so brevity is good.

viques · 28/06/2024 15:26

Why does there need to be a third trans space? First of all that is then turning the whole biological males and biological females in the same space into an issue for transmen to have to deal with - unless the plan is for third spaces to be exclusively for transwomen, and secondly it is ignoring the question of why isn’t the issue about getting men to accept transwomen into male spaces, it seems to be fine to say women have to accept transwomen into their spaces , but no one ever says let’s campaign for men to be kind and accept transwomen .

And thirdly , the whole third space argument falls at the first hurdle because transwomen don’t want them, nor do they want access to mens spaces, they want womens spaces, no substitutions accepted.

sorry , this was in response to @Namechangey23

DontStopMe · 28/06/2024 15:27

Thank you Jane, you were indeed brilliant. Once again we had two men patronising a women telling them that women's rights matter.
I think I'm going to need to spoil my ballot now, no way I can vote Labour with a leader saying this.

FOJN · 28/06/2024 15:30

Jane you were amazing. Thank you.

Sausagenbacon · 28/06/2024 15:31

thank you Jane - you said it for us all

Mummyoflittledragon · 28/06/2024 15:31

Thank you Jane. You were brilliant. How dare Nicky Campbell portray you as angry. You were eloquent and precise, unlike KS.

arethereanyleftatall · 28/06/2024 15:31

He is just a twat. He didn't actually say anything. 'We will do that...except we won't.' I could never ever vote for such a weaselly pathetic man.

BoreOfWhabylon · 28/06/2024 15:32

Well done Jane, you were brilliant!

However, I've just listened back on BBC Choices and there is no mention of Brianna Ghey. Just how much have they cut from the call?

arethereanyleftatall · 28/06/2024 15:33

What l liked about this interview is Jane is representative of all the women I know. Just ordinary (well awesome, so by ordinary I mean normal) women. That wasn't anger in her voice, that was frustration at the nothing that Keir was dribbling.

Quite. We are Jane.

Just not as brave!

Well done and thank you Jane.. you are so brave! I had a discussion some Labour campaigners about this and my heart was knocking in my chest so god knows how you felt!

Regarding the spoilt vote (which I have never done before but have no choice) I’m going to put ‘Don’t respect my sex you won’t get my X’
