Can you post some of the comments ?
I went and bought a copy of The Times today, now I wish I'd just opted for a free trial, or whatever their current offer is.

Well BKG is just such an interesting and informed commenter on many articles. And the chat in the times comments is a bit limited. Plus it's mostly grumpy old men whinging they don't have either way any more.

I'm not sure you can see the comments on a shared link?
I'll give it a go

Ok so here's some Mumsnet starter for 10

Only post on AIBU (am I being unreasonable) if you are super tough! Can be a bit rough there.

Chat is jolly and disappears after some days.

Lots of special interest boards.

I came originally for the breastfeeding advice and stayed for the feminism!

Hugely educational and one of the only places online where women can actually discuss the issues that affect us. Mad, but there you go.

Welcome British Kashmiri Girl. I love your comments in The Times. Very refreshing in a sea of middle aged, middle class white men giving us the benefit of their opinions.

I like your sensible contributions on “The Times” too! Nice to see you here.

BritishKashmiriGirl · 22/06/2024 20:49

Will try. Trying to get the hang of this "new" format :-)

BritishKashmiriGirl · 22/06/2024 20:54

Hi all! Thank you for your lovely comments! Appreciate them. I will do my best to learn the ropes quickly! Are you all still on TOL or left after the name policy?

Some of the the comments are becoming very Twitter like- I am not into conspiracy theories but it seems as there are many bots on there or activists and as soon as you post something they disagree with, they start to become abusive and mean.

What do you guys think? Will JK Rowling's intervention have any impact? I know I am voting on this issue alone. Too important imho!

ADHDHDHDHD · 22/06/2024 21:29

There are a few suspicious Russian posts on TOL, could be bots.
I like the fact that folk can reply to comments and basically say well no because xyz. And you do see some folk go 'oh right enough'
I think the dialogue is important.

The real name thing is ridiculous. Plus most of my likes get mysteriously deleted. I think there are a few TRAs in the moderation team who go through commenters history deleting posts and likes. I can't prove it but I'm pretty certain.

Quite literally stifling free speech. Not very 'kind' eh?

BritishKashmiriGirl · 24/06/2024 06:52

Yes the debate can be good except for a few names who I believe are trolls or bots.

I hadn't realised that posts were disappearing! Maybe you should contact TOL, they are very good at looking at issues? Maybe they get taken down when too many people report it?

Hi, I subscribe to the Times. Where can I find BKG's comments please? Apart from letters to the editor I can't actually see where anyone comments on articles. Thanks.

You can't see any comments?

Here is a link to a page which currently has 44 comments at the bottom of it. If you scroll down to the bottom of the page then beneath the "Related Articles" and "Read More" you will find the comments.

This is a link without a share token so it will only work for Times subscribers.

https://www.thetimes.com/uk/royal-family/article/japanese-emperor-begins-uk-state-visit-qm5wpq78g

(The reason I didn't include a share token is because comments are not shown when a share token is used.)

Can you see the comments at the bottom of the linked page? If not then have a quick word with the Times, it may be that you need to delete the cookies or something like that.

But that doesn't allow you to search for people who have commented. You can't even search for your own previous comments!

The only way to search for your own comments is if somebody recommends (likes) them or replies to them. You then get an email.

So if you want to search for one of your comments then you have to search your emails to find it and that will then link back to your original comment.

Currently, as far as I am aware, there is no way for searching comments either by name or text within a comment. And you would have to search within the text as commenters cannot use names like "British Kashmiri Girl" so she just uses that name in the body of her comments.

Well, when I say that there is no way, if you were to right your own code in something like Python or R to scrape the text from the Times website then you would likely be able to find other peoples comments.

ADHDHDHDHD · 25/06/2024 16:23

Scroll down to the bottom of each article and (if the log in worked correctly) you should see all the comments. Then you can comment yourself. But be careful what name is registered on your times account as this name will show up on your comments posted. Visible for all the internet to see.

Thank you for that link @Another2Cats when I sign in on my laptop to the Times website I can see the comments, just not on my newspaper app on my ipad, for some reason. I will have a rootle around for BKG in the pertinent sections.

BritishKashmiriGirl · 25/06/2024 16:30

Hi

Thanks for your comment! I am 'M Durrani' on TOL and sometimes I put my old screen name under my name. Usually I like to comment under the World News, and anything to do with women rights and I like to speak out and put my voice against extremism particularly religious ones.

Do you also comment there?

ADHDHDHDHD · 25/06/2024 17:12

I do, but you and Suzanne usually beat me to it Smile

I wonder if she would join Mumsnet too. Would be fab to have a TOL meet up!
