They hate us don’t they?

I notice all over social media that when it comes to taking the piss or highlighting a particular annoying type of character then ppl will default to the feminine. So, it might be a meme taking the piss out of the office gossip. It’s a woman; or doing an impression of that annoying jobsworth in the corner, it’s ‘Brenda’. Or focusing on a ‘gullible lefty’, then it’s a ‘women’s studies’ lecturer; or someone who is fake - always a woman, or a gold digger - always a woman.

like all the contempt in the world is directed at women.

Gay men do it, straight men do it, old men do it, young men do it.

How are you ruling out the fact that female teachers tend to have different styles of behaviour management to males being the cause for this rather than some bias on the part of students?

Men tend to be more authoritative, where as women tend to be more empathetic.

I think the phrase "men tend to be more authoritative" is complex, isn't it. This is, at least partly, down to physical presence, and louder, deeper voice. If you are more likely to respect someone because of these qualities, women are already working against something they can't control. Should we be saying that only make sergeant major types should be teachers, so that misogynistic boys behave themselves?

Often, I know if a boy is growing up in a household with DV. Boys tell me things like "my Dad loves Andrew Tate". These are often the boys who don't think they have to do a single thing I say.

I’m not in total agreement. There may be a leaning towards women but there are characters who are scorned who are men.
small mealy mouthed jobs worth is always a man
slightly slow dad who can’t keep up with the mental machinations of mums and daughter’s quick brains in sit coms
road rage characters
cranky old neighbour is almost always a man
dirty old man
yobs

This is true, but doesn't necessarily make men hated by women but some of it is more in line with male anger and VAWG?
We know men commit more of the violent crimes and that VAWG is an issue, particularly behind closed doors, but on TV we are more likely to see a man with minor irritability (or as you highlight a bit slow) being accepted as normal rather than a reflection on real issues.
There are sex differences/generalisations but across the world women are often viewed as 2nd class or lower.

Ignore what is said on social media. Accept who you ate and enjoy your life.

Some of my most influential teachers who were also the best with behaviour management were the complete opposite of sergeant majors.

About 85% of primary and 65% of primary teachers are female, worrying numbers of boys are growing up without a father figure. Maybe it's time we try to recruit some men?

Often men don't want to go into teaching because it doesn't pay well for the level of education and work involved, and it isn't a well-respected profession in this country. I'd be absolutely thrilled with any strategies to tackle these issues.

Average pay for teachers is broadly in line with other similar jobs which men tend to work in such as engineering, IT, construction etc. so I don't really buy that argument.

Maybe include quotas for hiring in the same way many companies are trying to recruit 50% female engineers? Showcase some male teachers in the same way female pilots are to raise the profile of teaching as a career path? Provide some public funded bodies to champion the cause of men in education in the same way WISE does for women in STEM jobs?

I'm a Year 13 tutor and have been for years. I've tried to to persuade lots of my boys to go into teaching and most of them just feel like it is too much work for the pay. The other jobs you list don't tend to take hours of marking home at the weekend.

I think we fundamentally agree - boys need good men as role models in order to grow up more respectful of women.

100% agree on the role models.

It would be nice to see a fraction of the effort put in to getting girls to do boy jobs be expended on getting boys in to atypical roles.

Men are already very welcome into schools and get a free line through to the top echelons. Like every female dominated profession those at the top are disproportionately men because they are so much more valued. Contrast the lot of women who try to break into the many male dominated areas.

I think what the other poster is saying is that we need more men in the classroom not in management, which I would agree with.

NeverFeelBadAboutThis · 04/05/2025 14:20

How are you ruling out the fact that female teachers tend to have different styles of behaviour management to males being the cause for this rather than some bias on the part of students?

It's very subtle. And, like many things, starts at home and with parental expectations.

My school has a very clear behaviour policy that is adhered to strictly by both male and female teachers. We have good behaviour generally and this is because the policy is followed consistently. Everyone uses the same behaviour management techniques and these are essentially rooted in empathy and developing a sense of personal responsibility.

Yet behaviour is often better for the male teachers. So why is that? It's not because the behaviour management styles differ.

And that is generally because, in our families, the man is still the authority figure in the household. The children grow up manipulating and verbally overpowering their mothers who will say to me things like, "I just give in and let his dad deal with it," and, "You just don't understand boys."

Many children come in to school with the expectation that they can argue with female teachers, and we'll eventually backdown and that an instruction or sanction doesn't have to be taken seriously until a man issues it. Because that's what happens at home.

I've been complained about many times by the mother of one boy in my class who thinks that a) I just need to be kinder to her son and b) I just need to accept that I can't have the same expectations of the boys as I do of the girls.

Just to add, she didn't have that expectation of the male teacher he had last year because, well he was a man and so she automatically deferred to his higher authority.

In my experience almost every man who has disdain for women have acquired it by being dragged through family court.

A process which historically is so rigged in womens favour it would be funny if it were not so sad.

We're starting to make some progress towards equality but women are just much better at playing these games as they've had a lifetime of experience of politics which are not really a part of male society.

Thanks for mansplaining family court to us, Laidbackguy. Something many women here know all too well. They may see it differently.

All of those jobs pay way more than teaching IME. Unless you're talking heads of year etc. Most teachers I know aren't making over £40k whilst the guys onsite I work with often make way more than this. One of the young lads I was talking to last week is early 20s and just got a job as a tower crane operator on £55k.

Eagle2025 · 05/05/2025 06:15

According to the ONS, 14% or primary teachers are male, 19% of deputies are male and 24% of heads are male. If you take in to account men not typically having career breaks for children and on average working more hours these figures aren't hard to explain.

On the other hand there are actual government funded bodies demanding things 50% of engineers be female despite only 16% engineering graduates being female.

Germaine Greer saying we will never know how much men hate us (or whatever the quote is) - I always wondered what it would look like the other way around. I read this future dystopia (utopia?) book, called it’s a (wo)man’s world. I like it. Turns out that (in fiction world at at least) we are both worse but also better…

Not a good job if you don't like heights though! And I'm pretty sure they take a bucket up with them for when they need a wee. 😂 It's a long way back down.

This is only my opinion but Germaine Greer comes across as a bit of a miserable old trout to me. 😂

so don’t know if you can see it, but this is a prime example. Why ‘Brenda’, depicting a middle age, white woman’ when this guy is young and Asian? Why doesn’t he use something closer to home? Why is this demographic such easy pickings?

then this guy ‘Martin decoder’ on YouTube. Apparently he can see ‘through the veneer’ but only it seems of women. There are not enough lying, deceiving men around for him to case. He’ll be getting at Taylor swift soon.

Anyway, you don’t need me to point out misogyny on the net it’s everywhere. But today it feels especially raw.

im a very experienced and capable team leader at work. One of the guys, polite and friendly on the face of it, will not deal with me, bypasses me and goes straight to my male boss. I’ve called it out to my boss who just says ‘we need to deal with it’ but then doesn’t actually back me up as obviously to him it’s no big deal, the guys just stick together. He has t said that but I know it’s what he thinks and secretly I think my boss sympathises with him. That’s what they do. They stick together.

we need nem to see us as necessary, beyond procreation.

at the moment there are no drawbacks to the way they treat us, other than the fact they may not get laid. And god they hate that fact, that we have that power over them.

because of the way society is organised, men need men and women need men, but other than biological reasons, men don’t need women.

they believe that if men were wiped off the face of the earth, women would die out due to our incompetence. But if women were wiped off the face of the earth they’d be ok, carry on thriving and just fuck robot dolls instead.

this is the sad truth of it I fear. We need to make ourselves indispensable somehow, so that they have to think well of us like they think well of each other. otherwise there is no incentive for men to change.

thoughts?

No we need to just live on our own women-only continent away from the feckers!
