Yeah, for an infants survival: letting a baby die because people find it icky for gran to do it would be cruel. This however is vile and there is absolutely no benefit to the child, in fact it's harmful in various ways.

A close friend and I had babies at a similar time, and occasionally fed each others (eg. If she was putting her toddler to bed, and her baby woke up hungry). I see nothing wrong with cross feeding, but that is 100% different to what was going on in this report

• we were both already feeding, so no drugs involved that might pass to baby

• neither of us were getting anything from feeding the other baby, it was more about helping each other/ sharing the chore

Women feeding other women’s babies is completely different.
I donated milk to a milk bank, and my son’s first ever feed was from a milk bank .

That comment of mine was addressed to the PP who were expressing a blanket disapproval of anyone breastfeeding someone else's child (and also with a nod to the commentators in the DM who wrote things about "why would a grandmother breastfeed their grandchild?", not acknowledging that this is in fact NOT a grandmother).

The point I was making is that it's not someone breastfeeding someone else's baby that is the objectionable thing here, that is a complete red herring and a totally different discussion. It's a man sexually abusing a baby, enabled by actual doctors.

A grandmother feeding a baby would be an extremely rare occurrence, unless she was fairly young and already feeding another baby then I can't see any circumstances in which this would happen. Can you imagine the thread in aibu? "I'm weirded out that my mil is inducing lactation so she can breastfeed my baby. AIBU?" The grandmother would be crucified, and rightly so.

@Blahdeblah12345 yes but we know it has happened and still does happen in some places. The story here is not about a woman breastfeeding someone else's baby. You may or may not have feelings about that, but that is not what this story is about. That's a diversion. It's about a man committing a sexual offence.

And in preindustrial/prehistoric societies it would not have been at all unusual for a grandmother to be lactating at the same time as her daughter. I was in fact still lactating at 48 (baby born at 45). I could easily have had multiple daughters who had babies at the same time.

Once again, this is NOT a story about a grandmother helping out. It's a story about a male sexual abuser.

I think some of the commentators in the DM are genuinely confused: things along the line of "I'm a grandmother and I can't imagine breastfeeding my grandchild". I wrote a few replies to such comments, saying that the story wasn't actually anything to do with a grandmother at all, but they all got deleted straightaway.

Surely the priority should be to support more women to be able to breastfeed if they shall wish. Not to plug the gap of the worst breastfeeding rates in Europe with getting men to lactate.

Most women get 0 breastfeeding support regardless of their issue or situation. Most women get told they have to stop breastfeeding as there isn't enough research on whatever medication it is they need to take to protect the baby. Yet this this has been seen as a 'priority' in breastfeeding research. That poor defenceless child.

My grandmother had 10 children spread over 20 years so it's quite feasible that she could have shared breast feeding with one of her daughters. I see no issue with that. Close family and they are all female.

Under the DM article, comments condemning this because the baby is getting drug-laced artificial "milk" are all allowed to stay, but any comment about this not actually being a "grandmother" is immediately removed. This is very lopsided journalism, especially as I believe some people reading this will be genuinely confused about what sex this person is.

Why on earth would the baby's mother agree to that? A grandmother would not be BFing her grandchild anyway, so even if this 'grandmother' wasn't trans there is absolutely nothing normal or remotely necessary about this. It's just self indulgent and creepy.

I imagine the trans woman went to her doctors who transitioned her and she said she wanted to breast feed/express. They had no contact with the parents as they wouldn’t need to give consent and just gave him the medication to induce feeding/express. The man then secretly tried to feed his grandchild and the parents found out and said fuck no.

MN isn’t very pro on induced breast feeding in woman, a the majority occurs in surrogacy which gets a bad rep on here. I had a friend who spend pretty much the 9months working on inducing breast feeding to feed her baby and it was really lovely to see. But would be shot down on here. SS wouldn’t let you breast feed and adopted baby as there are no babies relinquished and most are fostered first or fostered to adopt and you would have the baby removed of you breast fed. So most induced lactations is in surrogacy, which according to friend has quite a few people try but it would be something not seen here.
