Conscription for women

I’ve just read what the head of Army has announced on DM that it’s likely conscription is to return if the conflict with Russia escalates. Reading up on it and asking some people who I believe are in the know they seem to think this might be first war where women will be expected to fight on the front line. I’m going to be honest this terrifies me is anyone else ready to die in a ditch in Russia somewhere? I thought these days were over but apparently even with atom bombs we still have to duke it out the old fashioned way.

I don’t think women should have to fight, men start wars not women, no woman has ever started a war, it’s testosterone and ego, so no women shouldn’t have to fight, it’s bad enough women have to endure the consequences of the wars silly men start but no they shouldn’t be forced to get involved and potentially killed in a war they never wanted to have.

A few women that come to mind where clearly their lack of testosterone was irrelevant
Catherine the Great
Elizabeth of Russia
Isobella of France
Catherine de Medici
Boadicea
Margaret Thatcher

I can't imagine Margaret Thatcher on the front line with her high-heeled shoes Grin she was famously not keen on the outdoors. Let alone trench warfare.

Didn't she visit Hereford and the SAS counter terrorist training facility where she participated as a 'hostage' in an exercise with troopers breaking through doors and firing live ammo at targets and the like. Didn't flinch apparently.

Careful now, the trans mob will be along soon claiming them as their own.

I think that the idea of soldiers (mostly/all men) going far away to a front line and being in danger while civilians stay home and are safe is really not what war is usually like. It comes from American and to a lesser extent UK experiences where (thanks to geography) most recent front lines have been at a distance.
e.g Americans talking about how only men were drafted and killed in the Vietnam war. That's true from the American perspective but loads and loads of women died in Vietnam

During WW2 British women were conscripted into non-combat roles but still faced the threat of nightly bombings as did other civilians. Maybe that wasnt the same as storming the beaches of Normandy (though there were women on the front lines in non-combat roles)

But even then Britain's experience of WW2 is completely different to most of occupied Europe. And civilians in Eastern Europe/Russia/Asia etc.

So in terms of would women want to fight on the front line/be conscripted. I think it depends on where the front line IS. I am sure few women would jump at the chance to be flown 1000s of miles away to die in a ditch. But if the front line was the next town over (how most of the world experiences war) then it would actually be better to have a gun than not.

Also - the whole "I'm ashamed of this country/young people are cowards/women are hypocrites." In 1933 Oxford union held a debate titled "This House will under no circumstances fight for its King and country". It passed by a very large majority. EXACTLY the same criticisms about young people were made. And yet many of those young people who voted were actively fighting a few years later. Reluctance to die abroad in a pointless war started by old men in power isn't a new thing. It doesn't mean that if the UK faced a real existential threat people would feel the same. Women in particular are much more common to participate in war efforts the closer to home it is.

I was in the military for 22 years. Everyone is scared to go and do these things at times of conflict. But you have to decide if you feel your way of life and values are worth protecting for future generations or not. I think that despite the shortcomings we perceive as being present in the UK, most people would agree that they would rather that than live under a dictatorship or extremist regime. Additionally, female conscription is surely just a natural progression of the equality we all so keenly endorse.

It's not a case of protecting our way of life.
It's a case of some very rich and powerful men prepared to send normal folk to their death to protect their business interests.
Multiple governments (including ours) are escalating international conflict instead of attempting to de-escalate.

Which rich and powerful mens businesses was Maggie Thatcher protecting when sending a task force to recapture the Falklands?

I dont think anyone here has got a real grasp of how bad things will be if there is actual conscription - if there is forced conscription for one you won’t get a choice, not even a little bit. The least harsh consequence would be military prison.

but more to the point if it ever happens, and it’s a long long way away, it would be because we faced an existential, Britain ending scenario. A scenario where government didn’t exist, where the country was about to be completely and totally destroyed or controlled. The last time that happened we were fighting the nazis and it really was existential. Fight or we all either died or lost everything.

if that happens, you’re fighting.

You are joking 🤣 They would not have a cat in hells chance of conscription in the Uk. Have you been on social media this last week?
They also couldnt build a prison big enough .

If someone comes to your town with a gun to execute your neighbours, you’re fighting or being shot.

I’ll be defending my children and family and way of life - with my life. If you’re not you don’t belong in our society frankly.

do your history. This happens way more often than you think it does, in fact it’s common and frequent it just hasn’t happened here in the last 70 years.

it’s happening in Ukraine today.

Fliopen · 28/01/2024 09:49

Why are people even arguing about this? It's not going to happen.

Ah ive really missed the emotional blackmail from the Covid days.

If someone is coming to kill your friends and your family and you stand by, you barely deserve the title of humanity.

this does happen, frequently, regularly, in every country since before they invented countries. It’s not scaremongering, it’s just that in this one single country, there is the rarest of things, no genocide within living memory.

this country lived through it before and we will live through it again, history did not stop. Humanity did not change. From the children executed to the women gang raped in Ukraine it was not an outlier, not a weird circumstance. It’s humanity through and through and forever.

to think it could never happen to you is the height of hubris and arrogance.

JenniferBooth · 28/01/2024 13:39

@AlphariusOmegron It would do well for you to remember that that may be posters on here who grew up with parents badly affected by World War 2 Some of The Silent Generation are still alive you know. My DM is 88 next month. She was EIGHT when she was working the fields in Italy because my grandfather was in the Italian army.

Oh and while im at it google the Arandora Star. There were Italians who were living here rounded up by Churchill and put on that ship Then it was torpedoed. And some of those Italians had younger relatives who were in the British Army at the time. Their thanks for that was their relatives being killed.
