Labour Losing Women

Hi Mumsnetters,

I am despairing at the Labour Party and their policies and views on women's rights. I recently emailed my MP, Matthew Pennycook on the proposed bill on surrogacy reform. I shared with him the Surrogacy Concern briefing on the matter which is very informative. His response left me in disbelief at the ability of Labour politicians to represent the interests of women and our rights. Am going to post the exchange here:

👏👏👏

Amazing letters.

Equally despairing at the response.

Emmita01 · 18/12/2023 23:04

The conversation is ended. My best hope is I have given him food for thought. That's the best case scenario. Worst case is he just doesn't care about women and babies.

Amazing letters, well done Emma. I admire your patience and tenacity in writing to your MP about this. I despair of Labour now. It would have seemed unfathomable to me only 4 years ago, particularly given the state of the opposition, but I just cannot envisage ever voting for Labour again. I do not trust them with issues affecting women’s rights and don’t think that I can forgive them for their treatment of Rosie Duffield (among many other issues!).

Emmita01 · 19/12/2023 00:22

Yes the treatment of Rosie Duffield is just awful. The Labour Party are no friend of women.

Let's hope for the sake of poor people, disabled people, refugees, workers and yes, women, that there aren't many single issue voters like you.

Emmita01 · 19/12/2023 16:43

Women's rights cover many issues impacting 51% of the population. This isn't the only issue Labour have got wrong when it comes to our rights. Many of LP don't even know what a woman is. So I wouldn't trust them with any women's rights. If you're ok with the trashing of our hard won rights then go ahead and vote Labour. I wouldn't though. Women have spent years fighting for these rights.

They’re awful. I can’t vote Labour

pointythings · 19/12/2023 16:55

If every woman thought like that, we'd end up with yet another Tory government. And they've been so good for women, haven't they? We have a shitty electoral system and we need PR, but until we get it, single issue voting is folly.

Emmita01 · 19/12/2023 16:57

I think the Tories have been much better on women's rights. There are outstanding leaders like Kemi Badenoch who is doing a great and brave job of rolling back the gender woo nonsense.

And Rishi who wasn't afraid to make clear that people shouldn't be bullied into believing humans can change sex.

I don't see how any women can vote Labour in its current form tbh. I certainly won't.

Anyone who thinks they will improve anything are sadly deluded. They'll just spend 4 years blaming the tories. Sigh.

Emmita01 · 19/12/2023 17:06

I know there are a lot of women in the LP who agree on this, Rosie D and many more behind the scenes. But overall I can't bring myself to vote for my Labour MP based on his position. He also thinks "intersex" is a thing so he's really not briefed on these incredibly important issues.

Emmita01 · 19/12/2023 17:08

Agreed JingleBalls - the things a lot of the Labour MPs come out with are embarrassing

Thanks for writing to him, OP. I despise surrogancy. He doesn't give a fig for babies or mums does he?
I am in a similar position . Always been Labour but my MP swans about every Saturday with Steph "Endo". How can I vote for these people? My daughter (17) has suspected endo and has missed so much of her A level 2nd year and is always getting treated for anemia. She said if she ever comes across that Endo charity (which is based here) she will go apeshite as she is in so much pain. Labour are so useless.

Cancelledcurio · 19/12/2023 17:15

@pointythings fair point and I despise the Tories. But if you think Labour or any of the rest of them care about disabled ,refugee and poor women then you are very much mistaken. I am a poor disabled woman.Labour etc will allow any man in a dress to share spaces with female refugees, poor women, disabled women etc and attend to their personal hygiene just on their declaration that they are now women. Imagine you have mum with a stroke who cannot verbally object to who washes her ? Labour don't care just as much as the Tories don't care.
