Labour Losing Women

Hi Mumsnetters,

I am despairing at the Labour Party and their policies and views on women's rights. I recently emailed my MP, Matthew Pennycook on the proposed bill on surrogacy reform. I shared with him the Surrogacy Concern briefing on the matter which is very informative. His response left me in disbelief at the ability of Labour politicians to represent the interests of women and our rights. Am going to post the exchange here:

@Cancelledcurio exactly this. Their contempt for women is in plain sight.

Reading things like this make me despair with the Labour Party.

NAndJSaysVoteConservative · 19/12/2023 17:31

I was a Labour voter for decades but am now a fully paid up member of the Conservative Party.

Couldn't be any happier with my decision and just regret not coming to my senses earlier in life.

Let's hope for the sake of poor people, disabled people, refugees, workers and yes, women, that there aren't many single issue voters like you.

Absolutely agree with this @pointythings.
To everybody who says on this thread that they won't be able to vote Labour.... are you all wholly supportive of what the Tories have done in the last 13 years?

pointythings · 19/12/2023 18:19

@viktoria it's tragic, the way women who think of themselves as feminists are unwilling to see that the picture is so, so much bigger than just the trans issue. Just this month, the government slipped through a piece of legislation that reduces the rights of part time workers to paid leave. Guess who is most impacted by this? That's right. Everything this government has eroded away - funding education, funding the NHS, funding for councils - it all disproportionately affects women. And they're also stripping away our right to protest. How blinkered do you have to be to think that five more years of this is good for women?

It is

@pointythings It's not just the "trans" issue though is it? Labour are making those on UC pay prescription charges like the Tories are going to do. Are Labour going to raise the pathetic low wages ? Er em not really... too scared of big business to do so. Are they going to build Alot more social housing ? Naw just the "affordable" housing ones that isn't really affordable of you are on a shite wage like me ,working in the NHS. Are Labour going to renationalise the NHS ?? Now that would be a goodie? Naw. Ditto, schools.
Women are affected the most by the cost of living crisis and we are in the majority of unpaid carers/low paid! I look forward to either of Labour or the Tories trying to take my UC off me for not working enough(40hours) lol! Now of the Communist Party of Britain had candidates I might vote for them. I sure they don't want a revolution but the rest of the parties have fair scunnered me!

I think the Workers Party of Britain plan to stand candidates.

While I'm firmly on the right now I'll always have a soft spot for George Galloway.

@NAndJSaysVoteConservative GorgeousGeorge used to be my MP many many moans ago when I was but a lass. He's a chancer.

Cancelledcurio · 20/12/2023 03:19

haha I meant moons but it was probably moans lol!

jcakey · 21/12/2023 09:57

I honestly don't know who I'll vote for. I feel utterly abandoned by all the major political parties. I suspect our local Tory will get in, but even she is TWAW. Polly Toynbee wrote a piece a couple of months back expressing bafflement at why so many female voters remain undecided. I suggest she - and all the major parties - have a good, long look at what they are actually offering women voters. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/oct/27/female-voters-undecided-labour-rachel-reeves

Why are so many female voters undecided? Labour can engage them with policies, not politics | Polly Toynbee

Rachel Reeves’ plans would benefit women all over the country - commmunicating them properly will be key, says Guardian columnist Polly Toynbee

I cancelled my membership of the Labour Party. This was primarily due to them being unable to define a woman (adult human female) and they were quite happy to admit males into female only spaces/sports.

I think it's possible that the conservatives might even win the next election as a large number of Labour supporters are currently politically homeless, due to Labour's stance on subjects such as these.

Dastardlydingbat · 23/12/2023 23:18

I agree. I am totally politically homeless now. I really don’t know who I’d vote for in a GE
