I remember hearing about them and their planning problems a while back. Glad they got it up amd running.

I'll have a read of this, thanks OP! I grew up on Golden Girls and have always hoped for this style of set up in my later years. I have one friend who's up for it, another is but her husband is younger than her. I'm curious to read how these women have done it.

HeartInMyHand · 24/08/2023 09:43

I want this, but for younger/single/celibate/asexual/childfree women!

Just a little safe haven from the natalism and amatonormativity.

Supercat100 · 24/08/2023 09:46

Sounds amazing. I bet it's very expensive though.

Summerhillsquare · 24/08/2023 09:47

Heaven! Anyone want to start one further north?

lululongdog · 24/08/2023 09:48

Oh wow...where do I sign? And is there anything like this oop north I wonder?

lululongdog · 24/08/2023 09:49

Ha @Summerhillsquare cross post! How far further north...Yorkshire maybe?

Summerhillsquare · 24/08/2023 10:23

Suits me. Land cheaper in the north east, or even Scottish Borders.

ssd · 24/08/2023 10:27

For well off older women

YouJustDoYou · 24/08/2023 10:28

They do this often in some other countries. The women tend to be really content and happy, and the places are in high demand.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 24/08/2023 10:29

The article says several of the units are low-cost ones, through a housing association.

ssd · 24/08/2023 10:39

Yes low cost means nothing, look at the flats, these aren't for normal women you'll need plenty money for them

ssd · 24/08/2023 10:40

Nothing wrong with it being out of most women's reach but its only a utopia for the select few

But this would also work as a co-operative model which would make it accessible to anyone regardless of income/capital. They haven't chosen to set it up that way, but it absolutely could be done as a co-operative.

ssd · 24/08/2023 10:48

How would that work then?

Summerhillsquare · 24/08/2023 10:51

Look up LILAC in Leeds for a cooperative model.

lululongdog · 24/08/2023 10:54

I think the example given is predicated on the relative wealth and location of the individuals concerned; those of us on more modest means up north could consider something more financially achievable, with consideration given to different ownership models as suggested by PP.

I have long had a dream of a modest dwelling with "enough garden but not too much", possibly shared growing/pasture space, but without the communal living that often goes with it. I'm perfectly sociable but don't want an entirely shared life, I like my independence but would value like-minded people (almost certainly just women, but I might be persuaded otherwise) for company and support as I get older.

There are organisations that already offer this kind of thing, but the ability - and funding - to tailor something bespoke - is very appealing.

Igmum · 24/08/2023 10:57

I love this! Would definitely sign up to a northern outpost!

Are you just going by appearance, or do you actually know the costs for the housing association ones? I can't see it on the website.

ithinkicanithinkican · 24/08/2023 12:00

Just read this - looks brilliant. I note that there are a few arts workers in there - we definitely don't earn large salaries so maybe not as pricey as it looks? They may have some inherited funds, of course. I'd love to do this!

MeetMyCat · 24/08/2023 12:23

What a fabulous idea!

MavisMcMinty · 24/08/2023 13:25

When I win the Euromillions, I will set up as many of these as I can afford, what a wonderful worthwhile project!

God forbid anything ever happens to DH and I would be one of your first customers! Please could I have a ground floor apartment with a cat flap, decent sized parking space and fast broadband?!
