Magaluf: what causes this pack mentality in some men?

countdowntonap · 20/08/2023 11:55

Just read the judge’s comments from the recent gang rape of a young British woman in Magaluf. Phone evidence (from the men’s own phones!) shows eight men either involved in sexually assaulting or passively watching (and recording) the unconscious girl, who was in no position to give consent.
Looking at the photos of the men arrested, they appear to be fairly young. What on Earth leads a young group of friends on holiday to perform this action? Why did they all go along with it?
I can understand how evil people find each other online to commit atrocities, but can’t understand how a group of friends can all be of the same mentality. How many others would do the same? It’s terrifying.

Porn. Animal instinct. Safety in numbers.

MillWood85 · 20/08/2023 12:02

Easy/free access to hardcore/extreme porn that shows women in situations like this and "loving it".

Add in drink and possibly drugs - a toxic combination.

SapatSea · 20/08/2023 19:06

Pack Male mindset of : She got herself "in a state" so deserves it. Women are just bodies to be used - she's a slag etc.... take your pick. Men hate us (women).

Summerhillsquare · 20/08/2023 19:44

Patriarchy and the bystander effect.

tillytown · 20/08/2023 19:49

They know they can get away with it as the overwhelming majority of rapes never end in justice for the victim, at most they'll probably get a few months of jail time or a fine, and then everyone will forget what they did and they'll move on with their life.

AngryGreasedSantaCatcus · 20/08/2023 19:52

Pack mentality mostly. Not daring to say anything . Thinking it's a joke, it will stop soon then it doesn't and it's too late and they're in it. Morbid curiosity. For the leaders.. power and control. Not just over the woman, but the other men too.

Morestrangerthings1 · 21/08/2023 03:25

Dehumanising of women as being ‘less than’ males - down through the ages - is another reason

HappiDaze · 21/08/2023 05:34

It's so grim they were mainly French and one was Swiss.

And the CF saying it was consensual and then all of them filming it

Animals. Absolute pigs.

That poor girl

I'm so glad it was dealt with by the Police who were called by the security guard. Thank god he was a decent man.

HappiDaze · 21/08/2023 05:35

What the fuckity fuck makes them think it's remotely ok to behave like that in this day and age

This. A big part of male bonding revolves around dehumanising, sexually objectifying women. What Trump called locker room banter. It's as if they must prove to each other that they're valid men, by invalidating women.

Porn almost normalises rape. I think it would happen more if they thought they could get away with it, so I'm extremely glad this bunch didn't. The poor girl 😢

countdowntonap · 21/08/2023 12:06

I think it would happen more if they thought they could get away with it This is what frightens me so much. How could they all be complicit. I wonder whether they now all view each other with disgust (as well as themselves) or whether they’d go on to assault another woman in the future if they hadn’t have been caught.

PPs have given good answers for the 'why anyone' part of your question. The 'friends" part is easier. People tend to hang out with people who share their attitudes and values. You don't get many friend groups with both evangelical Chrisitans and committed satanists; aspiring Tory MPs don't usually holiday with the Communist party secretariat. Vile men who hate women are happy and comfortable with other vile men who hate women; a decent man wouldn't be. A decent man would call them out, call the police, and leave the group long before it got to this point.

Disturbia81 · 21/08/2023 14:34

Scary.. just think how many happen that don't get filmed.

JenniferBooth · 21/08/2023 14:44

Horrific I had heard nothing about this until i saw this thread. On the news ive only seen the Letby case and football

Itdjgsurchg · 21/08/2023 16:05

Awful. There was a similar disturbing case in Spain a few years ago. They actually called themselves the ‘wolf pack’ and had actually gone on the hunt for a victim.

I think porn is definitely a major problem. More hardcore stuff is becoming the norm and is more accessible to young boys. Even some of the music today glorifies violence to women or objectifies them as sex objects. As a mother of daughters I am very worried.

OriginalUsername2 · 21/08/2023 17:35

It’s hard to get your head around isn’t it. My DP said it might be something to do with initiation into some sort of fucked up group.

countdowntonap · 23/08/2023 16:13

An update in the news has now suggested that the men didn’t know each other.
Three men plied the woman with alcohol before inviting strangers in from the corridor to have sex with her!!

'Officers saw early on the complexity of the investigation, as the alleged aggressors didn't form part of the same group of friends but, encouraged by other participants, had allegedly joined the group action in sporadic acts, meaning no type of relationship existed between them,' he said.

Why didn’t anyone go to help her?

Oh my god.

TheaBrandt · 23/08/2023 16:46

They weren’t friends. It sadly bears out the horrifying statistic about the high proportion of men who would rape if they knew they’d get away with it. The porn saturated culture doesn’t help either. Disgusting pigs. Actually not fair to pigs.

That's even more horrifying. Men just trusting that other men are likely to be rapists.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 23/08/2023 17:06

This case makes me feel physically sick. As for what it says about men, don’t get me started. That poor, poor victim.

Rudderneck · 23/08/2023 22:08

Usually with a question like this, given that I am not a man, I try and think if there are similar examples of female behaviour.

I don't really have to think too hard to find examples of women engaging in pack like behaviour. Swarmings are the main violent example I can think of, but certainly girls and women will engage in horrible group bullying behaviour at times. And then there are things like mobs which can be composed of men and women together - groups like tese have done things like tear people apart limb from limb.

I've never wanted to do any kind of violent thing like that, but I do remember as a young teen being somewhat exhilarated to be in a group that was being mean to and gossiping about another girl, (which I've felt terrible about ever since,) and also being intimidated into just going along with that kind of thing, for fear of not being part of the group.

So I would imagine that similar kinds of mob behaviours and emotions could be involved when men do this kind of shitty stuff.

This argument is irrelevant since they weren't 'a group'.

The three men were pretty safe in assuming random men passing by would join in .... this part has really sickened me.
