Why was this woman arrested like this!?! Her poor child!

According to other Tweeters, she had paid her bus fare BTW.

Well I’m white and have definitely been asked to show my ticket. She was persistently uncooperative and is also responsible for any emotional harm to her son. Why not show your ticket? Ffs.
Being non-white has nothing to do with this, more being an antisocial pointscorer (and I say this as the mother of non-white kids) . Very frustrating.

I am not sure, but just maybe the the original poster of that comment was referring to the fact that there are white women on this thread acknowledging that Black women are treated differently ( often negatively) and have different experiences (again very often negatively) to white women. Also that white feminists poster's (not all, but a vocally dominant contingent) are trying to oppress black women. On the bike thread the experiences of black women (and men) and were very vocally shouted down. The thread was held up as men being the only treat. When in reality, white feminists like them are as just as much a threat to black women as any rapist could ever be. it's a shame they are the most vocal group.

Thank you. Yes, that was what I meant.

Socrateswasrightaboutvoting · 28/07/2023 17:00

No problem. I think most people understood that is what you meant. I think that comment is the just first of the next wave of 'colour blind feminists'. The mission should they wish to accept it, (which they always do) is trying to ensure that people like me know my place in the food chain.

PencilsInSpace · 28/07/2023 17:39

This thread - on the feminist topic - has generated over 11 pages full of posters queueing up to call feminists racists. Similarly, the pregnant NYC bike 'karen' thread - on the feminist topic - generated 20 pages of such comments. Yet strangely there is not a thread about either of these incidents on the BMN forum.

It's almost as if these incidents are only really of interest to some posters if they can be used to bash feminists.

It most definitely has. We were warned by Mumsnet about discussing other threads even though we don't do it on the scale that threads in the Feminism section do. For some reason black women talking about racism has to be policed more than women who are actually behaving in a prejudiced or racist manner. Did you also notice that in the Black Mumsnet section there are more questions about what x place is like to live that anything else? In 2023 Black women still do not feel safe moving their families to even nice areas without checking whether it is going to be welcoming/ safe for someone who looks like them. Most of us would love it if the worst thing we had to worry about was being called a racist feminist. First world problems are a funny old thing.

Bash feminists? Are the black posters on here not feminists?

You are missing the point spectacularly although have already proven one...you feel WHITE feminists are being bashed. But I'm a white feminist so am I bashing myself?

No one knows what truly happened surrounding either incident but the majority of posters on bike thread blamed the black boys and supported the white woman, and on this thread they blamed the black woman and not the white men.

Black posters have shared their experiences in both threads and have had people telling them that's not how things work.

Can you honestly not see what the issue is here?

Would it not be better to do a bit of research online to have a better understanding of the points raised?

I don't know the circumstances surrounding either any more than anyone else but I can absolutely see how it is very likely race played a part in both. If you do a bit of reading and listen to others you'd might see a different side.

It's like 'not all men' except here it's 'not all white people'.

You should watch the Muhammed Ali interview where he talked about snakes.

Thank you. It has been heartwarming to see that this thread has had at least some acknowledgement from white women on what non white women are experiencing. It is usually pretty bleak on that front in this corner on mumsnet, the absence of white women allyship has been stark.

Lndnmummy · 28/07/2023 19:05

I don't know anyone who has been 'bashing feminists' on this forum. I certainly would not. I would bash racust posters though. Just because racists doesn't think they are racists and believe that they are refined, educated and wordly, does not mean they are not racist.

The thread has been quite eye opening and frustrating. I totally understand why there is a separate black mumsnetters section because it must be really hard trying to talk and not being listened to.

Come on ladies, feminism is about solidarity with women - all women.

We should all listen to each other and all support each other.

Does it matter if it's the exact same posters? Perhaps it is, why don't you do your own research? Did you comment on the other one? If so, what was your opinion?

Point is it's a majority on both threads. Both threads involving women on a feminist thread.

The OP started this thread with the same view I had and the majority disagreed.

On the other thread the OP started with a different opinion than I had and the majority agreed.

Do I need to explain what majority means?

Poor white woman wasn't endangering her fetus. Bad black woman traumatised her son. That poor boy. No one even tried to shield him, they let him watch hysterically over a fucking bus fare.

And for a PP to mention the BMNs section...eh, can black mumnetters not post their opinion on a FEMINIST thread for WOMEN?

If a woman on here said a man had done something would you call her a liar and say 'Oh no, that wouldn't happen'? I know men, they wouldn't do that. I have a Dad and a brother.

No you wouldn't.

AntiSocial6DaysAWeek · 28/07/2023 21:04

So sorry, I apologise for speaking for the black posters on this thread.

That's my white privilege showing. I believe I have the right for my views to be listened to (even if they do not concern me) and am not worried about leaving the thread feeling like shit about myself because it is not actually my living experience.

Sorry x

Well if people are making huge generalisations then yes it does matter.

I did my own research, the woman who paid for a bike was being harassed by a gang of men and yet it was all her fault and apparently she was the racist for...paying for a bike and taking it from the docking station and not enjoying being harassed and videoed for it. It is perfectly legal to pay for a bike and take it out of the docking station.

The woman on the bus was harassed by several male police officers. Again, videoed and at least this time, people actually questioned what was going on and she was eventually released. I totally agree that she didn't want the hassle and wanted to get off the bus and probably has had a gutsful of years of harassment just going about her business.

Both situations include males harassing women.

I have no idea what other thread you are talking about, which is why you cannot compare them as it isn't the exact same people on both threads. So saying 'the message here is x and there is y' is only a valid argument if it is the same people.

Are you saying you did a survey and compared the same posters and the change in opinions across each thread?

That's very detailed work you have done, can you link us to it so that we can see your methodology? It would be a shame to keep this analysis under a bushel

Is that really what you you were asking? It seems to me you have a problem with a) Black women calling out racism and problematic behaviour and b) white (any other similar presenting ethnicities) women showing empathy and solidarity with Black women.

I am on both threads and I am Black. I and others like me watched the whole nasty business play out. We are rebuked for voicing our frustrations about racism and yet bigotry and prejudice are allowed to go unchecked in the name of free speech.

Where did you take your research from to find she was being harassed by a group of men?

They were teenage boys who had already been using the bikes.

The 17 year old boy and his mum gave an interview and his version was different from the woman's. They BOTH had a ticket and he had already been using the bike in question.

She said she was on the bike and they moved her.

He said he was already using the bike (which his ticket showed) and was waiting to for it to charge, she scanned it while he was holding it then tried to get on.

In the video she shouts for help saying he's hurting her unborn fetus despite not touching her.

So why don't you believe him but you believe her? She can't have been scared surely to grab the phone off from a scary group of men when she has a fetus to protect?

The BOYS poor Mum has been terrified something will happen to her son when in the video that we saw, he did nothing wrong. He called the woman 'Miss'.

The woman shared her ticket first on SM and got $100,000 raised on Go Fund Me.

The reason I feel so passionate about this is because of my children. They will never have to endure this and I believe my friend who has mixed race children what they have had to endure. Can you imagine being scared when your children leave the house with their white friends?

Pointless arguing with you. Read more than just one account of a news story and read the numerous academic articles on modern racism in both UK and US.

Read about the Met police. Read about the little boys and pregnant women being shot in the US.

I am done with this thread. It's like hitting your heard off a brick wall.

Show me the FWR threads that discuss other threads.

Yes I did notice there are a lot of threads on BMN about where best to live (my only tip is not Deal).

That's all a bit off-topic though isn't it? Unless your claim that white feminists on MN are as bad as rapists has something to do with our failure to chip in on those threads, on a topic where it is made clear we are not welcome.

I don't live in a nice area. I live in a very grotty part of SE London.

It's completely normal where I live for a swarm of TfL ticket collectors to board a bus or train and ask everyone for proof that they have paid for their journey.

It's completely normal for such operations to be already backed up by PCSOs and police officers - nobody called the police on a black woman, they were already there.

It's completely normal for people who do not have a valid ticket (on oyster, card or phone), or who refuse to provide evidence, to be asked for their name and address so that a penalty fare can be issued.

It's completely normal for any passenger who at this point refuses to give their details to be arrested. Over the years Ive seen black lads arrested and white lads, asian lads and mixed race lads.

The reason this is being discussed on this feminist topic is because unusually this case does not involve a young lad it involves a mother with a small, distressed child.
