Cara Delevingne on the F1 grid

So I will start by saying that I know nothing about Formula 1. But I’ve seen this story flying around about Cara Delevingne https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/formula-1/cara-delevingne-martin-brundle-interview-30426931.amp

So The interviewer approached her on the grid, asked if she could have a quick chat - to which she said no - he then said people on the grid ‘had to talk’ to him because that’s the deal. She then said she can’t hear anything so he walked away and made a sarcastic comment about how it would have been an ‘extremely interesting chat’. She later tweeted to say she was advised by the F1 team not to talk, so she didn’t.

Is it just me or is this bloke just a raving misogynist?

He approached her, a neurodiverse young woman, asked her if she could chat, implying there was an option. Then told her she had to. And when she didn’t obey his commands he made a snippy comment that she isn’t interesting - so why approach her?! And when did it become OK to openly make women feel uncomfortable. I bet my bottom dollar he wouldn’t have responded such a way to a strapping 6’5” bloke.

martin brundle does a grid walk before any race and after a bit of a body guard issue last year with megan theee stallion a rule was introduced that people on the grid had to talk to him
cara delevigne said no he said she had to and she walked away, apparently she was told by someone not to talk to anyone

heres a bit of the background

He acted like a dick, however I have seen him act like that with a whole manner of 'celebs' and well known people. Men and women.

Fourlegsandatail · 12/07/2023 09:04

I think he reacted the way he did because she appeared to be acting like an asshole and breaking the rules. I’m sure he’d have said the same about a male supermodel who behaved the same way.

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 12/07/2023 09:05

Talking to Sky is part of the grid, if you don't want to talk then don't be there. It is that simple.

And yes, he would (and has) made snide sarcastic comments about blokes - even big ones.

If you are on the grid walk then be prepared to say something about the race. You should be prepared to at least to be interested in the sport - or why be there!

Weepingwillows12 · 12/07/2023 09:09

It's Martin Brundle. He acts like that to everyone, male or female, young or old. He's not singling her out.

I think anyone should be able to say no though but he literally has a couple of minutes to grab whoever he can so he's under pressure. I think it's a bit of a non story.

NeverThatSerious · 12/07/2023 09:15

I mean, he’s not wrong, if you’re there you are meant to talk to him, but he’s a sarcastic berk to everyone, he doesn’t just limit it to women.

ElFupacabra · 12/07/2023 09:18

The “brundle clause” has been clarified to state celebs aren’t obligated to speak to him though so she did nothing wrong by declining to be interviewed, if she had her security team down there then yes, that goes against the rules.

I fall on the fence with this. She did nothing wrong but I don’t know why these celebs go onto the grid, knowing the interviews are a part of being there and then get arsey when they’re dared spoken to.

Lovingitallnow · 12/07/2023 09:18

I think it's akin to doing a red carpet and refusing to pose.

Badger1970 · 12/07/2023 09:19

She came out of that looking worse than he did.

Catchasingmewithspiders · 12/07/2023 09:21

Martin Brundle has been in F1 for years and has got frustrated that the people on the grid have changed from F1 enthusiasts to celebrities with zero interest in F1 who act like they are too important to talk with the people who are actually involved in F1

He has reacted in a similar way to men, Brad Pitt I think was one of them

However I think you have a point about neurodiversity and that actually there is a difference between "I'm a big celebrity who is too important to speak to people in F1" and "I'm neurodiverse and this is uncomfortable for me" and maybe he should be expected to consider that in his approach.

SilverstoneF1 · 12/07/2023 09:21

He's like that with all of them. She ended up looking like a dick.

If they're on the grid they have to chat. If she didn't want to, get off it. It's not hard.

SaturdayGiraffe · 12/07/2023 09:22

I just watched a video of her driving a Formula E.

Hugasauras · 12/07/2023 09:25

In fairness, that's Martin Brundle and he absolutely does behave like that with anyone. This isn't he first time he's been snubbed on the grid and made a remark about it. I have my own thoughts on rich celebs with zero clue about F1 wandering up and down the grid gormlessly because they are 'guests' of some or other team.

Mrsjayy · 12/07/2023 09:26

Badger1970 · 12/07/2023 09:19

She came out of that looking worse than he did.

She looked like an absolute tool. Just stay off the grid if you don't want to talk.

Alarae · 12/07/2023 09:29

Generally, if you are on the grid you are up for a chat. Neither of them came off looking great, but I get it.

As an aside, she was told by the F1 team she was with (Alfa Romeo possibly) not to talk as she was there for paid PR. So essentially not speaking to other media outlets as she was paid to be with them. This isn't on her- realistically this whole nonsense is down to the F1 team being a bit shit about it and not making it clear beforehand due to the general notion that anyone on the grid walk should be up to having a quick chat with Brundle.

They could have given her a quick one-liner of 'oh I'm happy to be here, it's so exciting' bla bla bla instead of what she was led to do by the team.

So. Blame the F1 team PR for their handling of it.

No such rule, as stated in the link you posted

"However, it has since been clarified that the rule does not explicitly order celebrities to accept interviews on the grid, with a spokesperson telling Planet F1: "Celebrities aren’t obliged to do interviews whilst on the grid, but security entourages are now no longer allowed to accompany them on there.""

yes the rules been clarified now, but it beleived to be in place up until now - i did mean to make that clear but obviosuly didnt

Quitelikeit · 12/07/2023 09:38

Martin does a grid walk at every race. He doesn’t approach everyone on there - he usually makes his way from the end of the grid to the front.

What is irritating is that if these so called celebs were true F1 fans they would know how Martin was and be familiar with his grid walk.

It really is a quick hello, who are you supporting today, thank you goodbye…….

IMO there was no hardship at all in being polite. Millions of people tune in so I agree she came off worse than he did. However I get the impression that she doesn’t care about her public image too much given her previous antics

ssd · 12/07/2023 09:46

Who the fuck cares

JenniferBarkley · 12/07/2023 09:46

Lovingitallnow · 12/07/2023 09:18

I think it's akin to doing a red carpet and refusing to pose.

Absolutely this.

It's the kind of access that money can't buy, and celebrities are there to boost both their own profile and that of the sport. Very much the Done Thing to do a quick interview "yes I'm a big fan/it's my first time/having a lovely time with <hosting team> so I'll be cheering for them today" sort of thing. It won't be an invasive interview!

Brundle has frequently treated men much larger than him in a similar way and is blatantly frustrated at celebrities coming on the grid and then not engaging. It's sort of like accepting an invitation to dinner but then ignoring your host's attempts at conversation.

Martin comes across as a good guy, and is one of the best at what he does.

SilverstoneF1 · 12/07/2023 09:53

She was in the paper a month or two ago allegedly smoking an illegal substance. She's had a tricky life when you read about her but no need for her behaviour.

Martin is a national treasure to anyone into the sport.

Spendonsend · 12/07/2023 09:58

I'd normal agree with simething like thus being misogynistic, but as an F1 fan, Martin Brundle is like that generally.

shropshirewitch · 12/07/2023 10:08

Don't want to talk on the grid, you don't get to walk on the grid. No it's not a "rule" but it's fucking rude to just be on there and not speak to the interviewers. She handled it poorly. I think his response was hilarious personally.

shropshirewitch · 12/07/2023 10:12

Look up her past weird behaviour on the red carpet (with Megan Thee Stallion). It's not being ND, it's being an attention-seeking div. She has been brought up in the past for drug use so that could be a factor. Plus that infamous interview with a morning show in the US where she sat there with a face like a slapped arse and acted like a stroppy child - although the hosts were just as bad in responding to her. She is very spoiled.

TheHairyHazelnut · 12/07/2023 10:18

There are loads of hospitality options for celebs that want to be observe the action but don't want a camera thrust in their face. Loads. Including being in the garage with a specific team.

If you walk the grid in the lead up to a race, you should absolutely expect to be interviewed. Even if you just off a quick "Hi, I'm rooting for Max today and hope it's a good race" or whatever.

She wasn't helped that within a few mins he was talking to Sam Ryder who was a delight - it acted as a real contrast.

Brundle's grid wallks are getting more and more awkward (imo) and I personally find him a bit too up himself, but it's really daft to be on that grid and then be upset when asked to talk.

Pick another option. As a celeb at an F1 race, you have a ton of choices that don't involve being approached for an interview.
