Cara Delevingne on the F1 grid

WeetabixTowels · 12/07/2023 08:47

So I will start by saying that I know nothing about Formula 1. But I’ve seen this story flying around about Cara Delevingne https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/formula-1/cara-delevingne-martin-brundle-interview-30426931.amp

So The interviewer approached her on the grid, asked if she could have a quick chat - to which she said no - he then said people on the grid ‘had to talk’ to him because that’s the deal. She then said she can’t hear anything so he walked away and made a sarcastic comment about how it would have been an ‘extremely interesting chat’. She later tweeted to say she was advised by the F1 team not to talk, so she didn’t.

Is it just me or is this bloke just a raving misogynist?

He approached her, a neurodiverse young woman, asked her if she could chat, implying there was an option. Then told her she had to. And when she didn’t obey his commands he made a snippy comment that she isn’t interesting - so why approach her?! And when did it become OK to openly make women feel uncomfortable. I bet my bottom dollar he wouldn’t have responded such a way to a strapping 6’5” bloke.

*Don't stand on the Silverstone track right before the British F1 GP, clearly knowing nothing about the sport, and then act like a dick when someone with a microphone asks you about said sport - simple.

You want to watch without being bothered by the press? Keep off the grid*

Absolutely this 100%

Well said!

MB's comment was because she clearly has no clue about F1 - if she did she would have commented. Garbage about someone telling her to say no to an interview.

This. She's an idiot.

Why start a thread when you know nothing about F1 🤦🏼‍♀️ if celebrities are on the grid, they have to talk. If they don't want to talk, then get off the grid. Its a choice they make.

Because it wasn’t about F1 it was about his response to her.

I know nothing about F1 and find this ‘you HAVE to talk’ nonsense odd - and also inaccurate as someone posted upthread.

I also don’t think celebrities should HAVE to talk on the red carpet either 🤷‍♀️

If they don't want to give interviews then don't be on the red carpet or the grid. Everyone who knows anything about F1 knows about Martin Brundles Grid Walks, they shouldn't be a surprise. And the celebs who actually like F1 you can tell because they speak to him anf are excited to be there in the atmosphere. The celebs who have no idea what F1 is and are only there because its the 'thing to do' that weekend you can tell

Loveys · 14/07/2023 13:36

she could of at least looked happy to be there!

a privilege which at least Sam Ryder realised 😀

JenniferBarkley · 14/07/2023 13:37

Red carpets are there for a reason. If she walked a red carpet but didn't pose for pictures or do any interviews then she's going to piss off the movie studio (or whatever the project is), the designers who have dressed her at their own cost and her own team who want her to raise her profile.

The grid is the same - you don't have to go but if you do at least play your part.

SemiJ · 14/07/2023 13:02

No means no. The male, pale, stale person should learn this.

Sure.

But in this case no also meant that she wasn't doing her job and was preventing him from doing his. She's has the right to say no but he has the right to be pissed off about it.

Again, Brundle treats male celebs the same.

BibbyDarling · 14/07/2023 13:45

Just to go back to OPs first post - YABU to comment on the F1 grid walk without knowing anything about F1 or Martin Brundle.

Cara was in the wrong, and as she is a fan of racing she does know the expectations, which means she can’t even claim ignorance like OP.

MB is a total pita. I rarely miss a race and always mute this but as I hate it. I don't get the impression anyone likes speaking to him, it's uncomfortable viewing.

Sam Ryder seemed delighted to speak to him. Although TBF he seems to be someone who is delighted by everything.

MadamWhiteleigh · 14/07/2023 13:56

Hannah Waddingham talking ti DC and Mark Webber was fab though - she called Lewis the 8 time world champion 🫣

Please don't bring neurodiversity into this, I have ADHD and don't claim her. She is a drug-addicted mess.

You don't need to claim her. She is her own person, who has been very open about her drug issues and her neuro diversity.

What hasn't been mentioned is that the red arrows were literally going overhead at the time. Hence the I can't hear you comment from her.

And does MB treat everyone the same? Well not if you look at his interview with Pep Guardiola a few mins later, where he was all beseeching, asking politely if he'd consider talking and allowing Pep's family to duck out the way of the cameras.

mydogisthebest · 14/07/2023 14:41

Martin Brundle talks to people on the grid walk. Everyone who follows F1 knows this. It's frustrating for him and the viewers when he gets the idiots who won't talk.

The people on the grid, whether famous or not, should be interested in F1 or why else are they there?

Most do talk to him but Miss Stuck Up decided she was not going to.

ILoveCreamCrackersMe · 14/07/2023 15:14

Miss intelligent couldn't even think for herself and had to ask for an opinion of someone else if she could open her mouth. What a free spirit.

I'd be very surprised if Brundle was fawning over Pep, he famously knows nothing about football and last year when he was interviewing an England (male) footballer he had to have the questions fed to him in his ear and even said to camera that was the case and said he didn't know who the footballer was. Could be seen as disrespectful? Certainly if it was a female footballer.
Why do people comment on something they know nothing about?

What? Why have you decided i know nothing about F1 or football?

MrsJamin · 15/07/2023 09:03

I know someone (an F1 fan) who's met MB a bunch of times and he was just lovely and very down to earth. He knows how much being on the grid means to F1 fans and how frustrating it is to see people there who are just there because of fame and/or money. He knows how lucky they are but they don't and I can totally see that's frustrating. We love watching the grid walk especially at Silverstone and in the USA. Sam ryder was his normal dose of warmth and he's a big F1 fan so could actually talk about, you know, drivers and cars etc!

OriginalUsername2 · 15/07/2023 09:13

Always been a fan of her but my opinion changed watching her live on the grid. Clearly has no interest in F1 and was just there to be seen on the grid. Martin Brundle was literally doing his job. She treated him so rudely and came across like a teenager.

GuinnessBird · 15/07/2023 10:29

Cara came across as a rude gormless idiot, Sam Ryder on the other hand was the complete opposite and he seems to know his F1.

MadamWhiteleigh · 15/07/2023 11:05

MB makes me laugh as sometimes he clearly doesn’t know who the celebrity is and is frantically being told in his ear

HundredMilesAnHour · 15/07/2023 11:16

As others have already said, Martin Brundle is a national treasure. In fact, in the F1 world he's a global treasure. Cara was foolish and/or badly advised.

flurbubbly · 15/07/2023 12:09

I work in the entertainment industry.

Please understand these events are work. For you or me getting to go on a red carpet might be a fun social thing, but for celebs they are very literally work events. Paid and contracted (sometimes paid in money, sometimes in kind).

Going to a red carpet and not speaking to press is like turning up to your office and refusing to do any work, then still expecting to get paid.

Do your work.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 16/07/2023 15:00

She's behaved badly. MB's reaction had nothing to do with misogyny
